So many people that I come across are bashing Gerard Butler's interpretation of Erik. Saying that his voice sucks, he's too sexy, he disgraces the essence of the Phantom of the Opera.
And to me this is all very sad.
I do believe he wasn't as deformed as he should have been, but for not singing very much before Phantom he came out with a pretty good voice.
We all bash him so much and I have to admit to this, but it he really all that bad?
Also, to add to this conversation, Michael Crawford has also been insulted in the way he sings, and acts and so many people think that's wrong as well.
I think we should respect all of Erik's sides, so to speak, as we never know if Erik really did have a side that craved sexual things...<- Of course this means Gerry...
What do you think?

Well, they are our opinions. People tend to be more brutally honest on the Internet. People see things the way they want to see them. Toning it down doesn't change our minds.

I don't think everyone in PotO has to sound like an opera singer. Really, Carlotta is the only one who has to sing operatically. The character of Christine is also an opera singer, but her songs are not in the operatic style as are Carlotta's. And I think there can be even more leeway for the Phantom.
I don't think Gerry was that bad, considering. I'd even say he was far better than Colm Wilkinson (that man just sounds to me like he's never has a singing lesson in his life). I hated Gerry's style of singing at first, but I also hated Michael Crawford's singing when I first heard it. Both styles grew on me.
And as for being too sexy, most of that has nothing to do with Gerry, it has to do with the costume, makeup, directing, casting, etc. You could say he "acted" too sexy, and I'd agree on some level with that.
So no, he is not really all that bad. It's just more fun to bash people than to constantly lavish praise on them. wink That's why I complain about Emmy Rossum too.

I think Gerry did a great job not coming from a music-oriented background. And hey, he could always have ben worse, right?

Honestly, no matter how many other Phantoms I see, I can't hate Gerik. He's the one that got me into the fandom.
True, his 'deformity' -coughsunburncough- needed to be MUCH worse. I was expecting something really horrible the first time I saw it....what came out was something you could get used to pretty easily.
But I thought his voice was very good when I first saw it. No one I know can hold that last MoTN note...

I don't think I could ever hate Gerik...
He seems to be the one who gets alot of people in here into Phantom!
I owe him for getting me into Phantom!
And as for the sexy thing, after seeing the broadway preformace, I see it as him just embracing the touch of another person who won't die in the next 5 minutes! heart

the only thing that i dont like is how people think that POTO came from the musical yet long before the musical was the movies and the book..if ya read the book the story is much more complex and longer AND it was based off of a true story...
anyways the musical, meh i do like it but im just not a fan of how eric is portrayed towards the end...

I skimmed (did not read) the top peoples sayings things.But i felt like saying this- saying Gerald Butler cant sing is like saying Will Ferrell can not sing. Look at him he's dancing and singing the Fuhrer's favourite tune from the producers.
really I don't know what people say about Will. Guessing i probably just made all of that up...
