I wasn't too sure where to put this, and apologies if there has already been one. I'm a lazy b*****d and only did a quick scan of the modelling sub to see if there was another.

I've lost interest in GW for various reasons, and I've taken up Flames of War..
I already have an alright sized German force, but haven't played a single game yet. Yay.

So, any one else around here taken up Flames of War?
If so.
Which nation(s)?
Played any games?
Why the hell isn't there already something about this here? D: <
And don't give me that "This is a 40k forum" bull.

Also, on a sort of but not very similar note, I finally got around to watching The Pianist last night (It's been on my shelf for over a month). And might I say - Phwar!
And I thought Schindler's List was good.
Feel free to discuss that too

I approve of this thread.

The game sounds really decent and I will pick up the core rules some time this year. How do the rules feel?

Personally I wanted to go with the (Late War) Germans, but everybody and their mums are fielding Germans around here! Most regiments are in fact SS panzer with one or two Tigers or King Tigers, making many an allied commander cry for 17 pounders. So unless they release the M26 Pershing for the US soon I'll throw my lot in with the (Late War) British, they at least have the brains to mount 17 pounder guns in their Ronson burners. And nothing beats the look of a battery of 25 pdr guns.

I tend to avoid good (read: a serious movie with a message, not Helga the SS she-wolf) Holocaust movies, as they make me cry. Plus the sight of inhuman suffering makes me loose sleep at night.

I had a feeling you'd be interested in this. : D

The rules are good, I think. I'm still pretty sketchy on them, but I think they could be likened to 40k's. The movement and firing is similar, but deciding on whether a tank is destroyed or not is a lot less intricate. You either die, live, or bail out, and it's determined by an armour save and then a 'roll to destroy'.

Most tanks, if you bail out you have to roll a 4+ next turn to see if your crew are brave enough to get back in. A bit of an exception with Shermans, their stabilisers mean that they don't blow up, apparently, and so they can re-roll their test to get back in.

I learned from a wee game scenario that the Shermans with 76mm cannons can penetrate the side armour of a Königstiger with a little luck.
But is, of course, useless against the Königstiger's front armour.

It was a toss up for me as to go with Germans or Soviets. The local game store only stocks Germans at the moment, and so I bought a couple to see what they're like to paint (not too bad), and I got hooked on Germans.
Mainly because I like their helmets.
Shallow, I know, but it's true.
I also got a Greatcoat Grenadier platoon, which is, in a word, awesome.

I think the Soviet miniatures are lacking something. They don't really have that Russian feel about them. If I ever get another army, it'd probably be American.

And yeah. Pianist is certainly a sad film, even more so than Schindler's list. I was pretty choked up a few times, but I think that's part of what makes it a good movie.

i have heard about this and have wanted to try it, or simply buy some s for 40k conversions, but i dont know the scale of them compared to warhammer, could you enlighten me?

They're 15mm, as opposed to 40k's 25mm.
They'd be pretty useless for most conversions.

I just discovered that they've released both Stuka G's and Typhoons for the game, making it hard for me to decide between the British and Germans as I like both attack planes a lot.

The bailing out rule is a nice detail, it no doubt allows you to shoot at the abandoned tank until it goes up in flames instead of waiting for the crew to get back in. Though Shermans that don't blow up? Unless they have water magazines I don't really see that happening. /nerd

What about morale and leadership rules? I heard that those played quite a role in the game, along with taking objectives and killing the enemy.

I am delighted by the level of detail shown in the little things, like the Firefly barrels whee

Ha, yeah. The detail on these things is really quite impressive.

I haven't read the Morale rules myself yet so I'm afraid I can't really say. The local game store owner goes to a club in the adjoined town over and has invited me to come along as a guest, where I hope I'll be able to see some of the rules in practice.

I am really torn between the Germans and British after reading their respective special rules. Tiger Aces and Moaning Minnies versus massed artillery barrages and cruiser tanks.

Personally, I'd say go British if you like them and everyone and their mother is playing Germans already.

Okay, with a friend's assistance I've made up a very rough army list.

Grenadier Kompanie:

HQ
2x Command SMG team
1 x Puppchen team

3 x grenadier platoons, each with:
1 x command team
8 x MG team
1 x Light Mortar Team

Machine Gun platoon:
4 x MG Tobruks
1 command team

Panzer Kompanie:
HQ: Von Luck + Trusty Panzer, regular panzer
Body: 2 x 3 panzers.

It comes to about 1400 points, and that's with proxying a tiger for a Panzer.
You need at least 3 of a type of tank to make a platoon.

That's leaving out the Goliaths and turret bunkers, which we haven't found a use for yet.

I get the impression that TTGs are a lot more common in Europe, I got a boxed castle from an ancient gaming system that was apparently popular in Russia for a time, but'll work great for 40k OR Fantasy ruins.

Oh. xD

No. I was completely lost on that one.

I can't really say much about the differences in how common it is between America and Europe, but I think it's a safe assumption.
Pretty much every war game I've ever heard of has originated in Europe.

Apart form Flames of War.. which came from New Zealand.
