Navarri picked her way carefully along the narrow ledge, placing her white forepaws daintily one in front of the other, then bringing her navy hind paws up behind them after she was certain the ground was firm enough to support her weight. Her bright yellow eyes were fixed upon the prize she sought, a flower nestled amongst the rocks on a lower ledge, at least a good tail-length away. She gasped as the wind buffetted her, teasing its way under her variegated blue wings, trying to lift her back into the air. She tucked them tighter against her sides, finding her purchase on the face of the mountain again, embedding her claws into the thin layer of hard-packed dirt. The weather had been so calm when she'd started out that morning on an herb-gathering trip, but as she'd gone higher up Gram's Peak, the wind's strength had increased. It rushed now up the cliff face, causing her to squint her eyes against the blast that tussled her long navy mane. She breathed easier when the gust blew itself out, her mane resettling around her shoulders in slightly tangled curls.

She anchored her hind paws deeper into the dirt and rocks of the ledge, crouching down and slowly inching her forebody down the side towards her goal. She kept her eyes focused upon the little white flower, its five petals unfolding in a star pattern around a yellow center. The stem and leaves were a dark green, and she knew the root would be entrenched deeply into the pocket of dirt nestled within the rocky cliff. The real trick would be getting it out of its cozy little bed, where it was shielded from the main force of the wind by a jutting rock. Navarri waited for another gust of wind to pass, clinging precariously to her foothold where she was tilted head-down upon the mountainside. She scraped her belly upon the rocks beneath her as she hunkered closer to the ground, muscles straining as she struggled to keep her wings fixed to her sides, eyes averted from the spiraling drop that she'd be treated to should her grip fail.

Breathing a sigh of relief as the wind faded again, she crept forward once more, a glance down to the treetops far below telling her whether another gust was on its way. Seeing none forthcoming, she reached out and braced her paws against the jutting rock that shielded the little flower, ducking her head down to nose at the dirt, hoping that would be enough to loosen it. It was packed hard, so she freed one forepaw and scratched frantically until the root was exposed, then she grasped it with her teeth. She could hear the first whistlings of a new gust of wind, and scrambled to find her purchase again, pushing herself backwards up the face of the cliff as she tugged the plant free. Her paws lost their purchase and she slipped lower, her chest landing unceremoniously where the flower had just been, the large tuber root swinging against her chin. She struggled to her feet, then quickly hunkered back down into a crouch as the wind threatened to lift her up and slam her into the mountain.

Lorccán was making his way down from his latest climbing expedition up Gram's peak when a white and blue shape caught his eye. Turning his head and focusing on it he realized it was another fafner. It appeared that she was having trouble getting to something on a lower ledge though he couldn't see what it was. He picked up his pace, running down the familiar rocky ledge.

He had almost reached the other fafner, who he could now tell had wings like himself and was a female when a large gust of wind sent him into the side of the mountain. After the wind stopped and he'd regained his bearings he quickly checked on the status of the female who was now about three ledges below him. She seemed to still be bracing herself against the wind and he moved quickly to make it to her ledge before the wind blew again.

"Excuse me miss... are you alright?" he asked, looking her over for any signs of injury and then looking around them and trying to judge the quickest way down from the mountain. If not for the wind he would just jump and glide down but if he dared to try it now he'd be blown into the side of the mountain and though he was brave he wasn't stupid.

The wind began to subside, and she had just straightened when a blur of brown and white appeared next to her. She ducked back a couple steps, yellow eyes wide, the plant dangling from her mouth, root swinging back and forth. Was it a mountain cat? Her panicked heartbeat slowed a little when she realized he was another fafner. She unconsciously tucked her wings tighter, expecting him to view her as something unnatural because of them.

"Imff.." She dipped her head, laying the precious plant upon the ground. "I'm fine, thank you..." Her voice was soft and melodic, and steady despite the uncertainty in her eyes. "It's just rather windy today, is all. Let's get up to a better place, I ended up herb hunting somewhere precarious!" She picked the root up once more, the stem and flower dangling down as she lept nimbly back to the main path, waiting for him to follow. As she looked back, she noticed his wings for the first time. Like hers, they had been folded tight to his body to avoid being lifted away by the gusts of wind. She found herself staring at him; she'd never met another fafner with wings before, and the striped patterning upon them held her transfixed.

Lorccán nodded and smiled when she said she was fine. He sighed with relief and followed her back up to the main path. Since he'd been watching his footing he hadn't noticed her staring at him but when he reached her he couldn't help tilting his head to the side with curiousity. "Is there something wrong?" he asked her as he tried to figure out if there was something stuck in his fur. Once he was sure he had nothing clinging to him he looked back at her, still wondering what it was that had her staring at him like that.

She looked down and to the side, a slight blush just barely visible beneath the white fur on her cheeks. She pushed a rock aside, pulling a woven-grass satchel out from underneath it, and slipped the plant inside along with the rest of the herbs she'd gathered. She took a moment longer to collect her thoughts, tucking her head through the carrying strap so that the small bag hung in front of her chest.

"I... was just surprised. I hadn't known there were others like me here, with these... strange wings..."

She lifted hers slightly from her sides, the gray blue feathers ending in a rich cerulean blue, the bends of her wings covered in deep navy feathers. She tucked them back to her sides once more, unable to meet his eyes at first. She glanced back up, finding them to be a rich brown. Her navy lashes fluttered over her own golden eyes as she was unable to hold the gaze for long, too shy and confused.

"The others... they'll hardly talk to me, even when I'm tending to their fevers and wounds..." Her eyes held the sadness of having been isolated due to her supposed "deformity," a recessive mutation she'd inherited from who-knows-where in her family tree.

Lorccàn watched as she collected her satchel and put it on then nodded when she spoke. He'd seen other with wings but never spoken to them before. "There are a few of us around, I've seen them from a distance but never spoken with them."

He too was taken to stretching his wings and then placing them neatly back against his sides. He noticed her shyness and smiled warmly at her, trying to reassure her that it was alright to be herself and that she didn't need to be afraid. "I know how you feel, only a few fafner have ever talked to me and they were rogues who saw me as a tool to use to their advantage." he said, a tone of disgust lacing his deep smooth voice as he reached the end.

"Don't worry about them, they just don't know how to accept change. After they get used to the idea they'll be more friendly." he said and prayed he was right, he didn't like to lie.

Her head dipped shyly, she looked up at him with eyes that dared to contain a small spark of hope amid the uncertainty. She was glad to know that she wasn't the only winged Fafner, but it didn't erase all the pain she'd been put through because of her mutation.

"I have seen what the Rebels have done in my ministrations to the Clan, but never met one myself." She didn't have much of an opinion on the Rebels, since she hadn't interracted with them, but she hated the fact that so many had been injured in the raids.

"I am Navarri," she spoke up after another moment, her voice more confident now. "I've gotten what I came to the mountain for, so I'll be heading back down. Where were you destined... sir...?"

Lorccán nodded when she spoke of the raids. He'd been in the middle of one before, not really as part of the clan but he still fought to protect them.

As Navarri introduced herself it struck him that he hadn't yet introduced himself. Good job... aren't you supposed to be a gentleman? he chasticed himself silently before looking into her eyes and smiling. "Ah... I've forgotten to introduce myself, forgive me. I am called Lorccán. It's a pleasure to meet you, Navarri. As for what I am doing up here, I was just exercising my wings, I was on my way back down the mountain when I saw you."

He paused for a moment, thinking over what he would say next and decided it couldn't hurt. "Would you mind heading back with me?" He looked at her with hope etched into his expression. He liked this female. She was intelligent and gorgeous, what more could anyone possibly ask for in a companion?

She tucked her head towards her chest, her wings shifting slightly as she smiled up at Lorccán from under her eyelashes. "I'd be very glad for the company, Lorccán," she responded, blushing a bit as his name rolled off of her tongue. To cover up her shyness, she flexed her wings and positioned herself for takeoff. She cast a gaze back at him, her yellow eyes sparkling with a touch of boldness.

"How swiftly can you ride the mountain winds?" she laughed, before leaping off the edge, wings outspread to catch the draft that had just raced down and away from the cliffside.

Lorccán noticed her sudden shyness and the fidgeting and felt himself becoming lost in a torrent of happiness. Was he somehow wooing this beautiful young femme? The thought sent shivers down his spine but he held all the rest of the thoughts back, they'd only just met after all. As the wind picked up and came rushing over them heading down the mountain side she proposed a faster way down the mountain and his eyes lit with excitement. There was nothing he loved more than flying, soaring high above the heads of all the other fafner who dare to ridicule him for his wings. As she readied for take off he did as well and when she leapt he was right behind her. "I can ride them as fast as I need too, or as slow as I want too." he replied calmly to her as he soared by her side.

Soon riding the current wasn't enough and he couldn't help but show off a bit, flirting with Navarri as he did so. He was doing loops and spirals around her, he was always so much more graceful in the air than he was on his feet and some part of him, perhaps larger than it should be, couldn't help but entertain the idea that he would somehow impress her and perhaps she would want to become more than just friends with him... someday.

His excitement was contagious, and she got caught up in it too with the feel of the wind teasing through her feathers and mane. Her eyes sparkled as she watched him dance with the wind, admiring his grace and skill. After watching him for several minutes, she couldn't resist, the urge to dance with him too strong as it flowed through her limbs. Forgetting the pouch that hung around her neck, she twisted a few loops and spirals through the air, her pace driving faster as the spirit of flight took her. But suddenly, something knocked her ears forward, and a streak of brown went falling towards the earth.

"The herbs!" She tucked her wings and went into a dive, trying to catch up to the precious satchel, its looped cord whipping above it like the tail of a comet as it sped towards the forest canopy below.

Caught up in the spirit and euphoric feeling of their aerial dance Lorccán was having a wonderful time. They were probably putting on quite a show for anyone who could see them, dancing the way they were. The euphoric feelings was cut off as soon as she went into a dive.

Looking down he saw what exactly had caused the change and he too tucked his wings in, and quickly surpassed her in speed, gaining on the satchel he was almost able to reach it. Almost... and then... there it was, caught in his jaws and he pulled up out of the dive, grasping tightly to the little cord he circled on a current waiting for Navarri to reach him. All of that practice really pays off.

Focused on the satchel, she was startled when a large form streaked past her, and lifted it just before it would have reached the trees. She banked her wings and came out of the dive, paws skimming above the treetops as she gained altitude again. She rose onto the current Lorrcán was riding, her heart pounding. She'd spent the entire day navigating the mountain to get those herbs, and it would have been quite a blow to lose them to the forest below. Ducking under him, she nuzzled a quick thank-you against his cheek before taking a spot beside him, matching his speed.

"Oh, thank you, Lorccán!"

Lorccán was a little worried as he saw Navarri skim the treetops but when she managed to recover and regain altitude he relaxed. The nuzzle was unexpected and nearly caused him to forget to fly but he managed to keep his composure, just barely, and smiled.

He couldn't speak because he refused to risk dropping the satchel but he slowly rode the current down as he spotted a clearing to land in and once he was on the ground he set it down and smiled. "Not a problem, I'm always willing to help a lady." his smooth velvet voice seemed to echo in the clearing. Casually he brushed up against her side, nuzzled her cheek and then looked around them as if nothing had happened.

((Sorry for the unnanounced hiatus. Life took a big bite out of me and just finished chewing me up.))

She tucked her head down, aflutter from the physical contact. This was the longest anyone had talked to her in a long time -- willingly, anyway -- and he was rather attractive, at that. She'd never dared to look long at another male, since most of the ones she'd known had viewed her as a mutant, an anomaly. She risked a glance at him, then cast her gaze around the clearing, trying to settle her mind.

Realizing where she was, she perked up, tossing the tassle of her tail up over her back in a quick wave. "We're near my home, we just have to pass through the trees there and cross the stream. My hut is nestled in the hills just beyond." She looked up at him shyly. "Would you like to accompany me there?" Nervous at her bold request, she bent down and picked up the satchel's strap, then quickly ducked her head through it before it fell to the ground again. She pretended to focus on resettling the satchel around her neck as she awaited his response.
