okay so I like to say that there are two types of guitarists-
One group are the ones that don't know how to play notes and don't know the notes they are playing, need TAB to play songs, and are just playing to jam out at parties and get chicks. These I like to call guitar "players"
The other group are people that know actual notes, can figure out actual sheet music, can play a full song, and practice more than three chords ("three chords to make eye contact" lol -Mike Birbiglia) These I call Guitar Players
so which do you think you are?

I'm neither. I know the notes on the fretboard, yet have no idea what the ones are in the scales I play. I can't read sheet music, know only three songs, practice more than three chords and I need tab to play songs because I can't play from ear. But I bet I could play circles around the so-called guitar "players." Frankly, I don't like how you specify who is who, mainly the ability to figure out sheet music.
But that's just my two cents.

I can't read sheet music at all, but I know for a fact that I can outplay every guitarist at my school that can. There are only two students at my highschool that I would outright admit to be better then I am, and neither of them can read sheet music either; one of which is the son to Thomas Porl of The Cure. Oh yeah, a couple other guitarist that you would classify as "Players": Stevie Ray Vaughn Kurt Cobain B.B. King Almost every punk guitarist EVER.

I don't like how you've catagorised guitarists either.
I can read sheet music, and I practise alot more than three chords, but there are alot of people I know who don't, and who play better than I do. Actually, I have the opposite problem. While I could already read music, It took me ages to figure out how to read tabs (don't laugh). I still find music easier to read. I know some great guitar players who read tabs, and some great guitar players who read music, and I don't think it matters.

I've only taken lessons for 6 months, but I can play three songs on the fretboard (notes only) by ear. I know way more than three chords, and I hate tabs. It took me a while to figure out what it was about, but it seems like cheating to me. Kurt Cobain's redeeming quality was his voice. He might not have been able to play (very well, that is), but that was mostly because he was so wasted by the drugs. So he could only play really simple things. And I write songs. Rawr. I rule.

I know sheet music and know chords. I don't use tab unless for learning rock songs that go past the 12th fret.

There's nothing wrong with using tabs, and there's PLENTY of widely known guitar players that can't read sheet music, as been mentioned before.

I can read sheet music, but I never do. It's inconvenient for the guitar when compared to tabs.

I can just about read sheet music. However, I prefer tabs when learning songs. But if I were to write my own song(s) I would probably plan it out on sheet music first - just to get all the scales and other theory stuff right.

Ok... I can't read sheet music, I learn most of everything by ear, and I only use tabs to guide me when I need some help. I know countless songs and chords. I started playing out of self-interest. I've been playing for about 3 1/2 years now and I'm self-taught. I've gotten pretty damn good over that time. If girls come to me... it happens. XD
