Maybe even the drum major himself! There are a couple weeks until tryouts in early June, and The current assistant drum major has been meeting with me, and 4 other drum major hopefuls. So, all six of us (assistant included) are trying out. She has been teaching us the proper way to conduct 2/2 3/4 and 4/4 time, along with the Star Spangled Banner routine. Being the weird person I am, I wrote everything I learned in a notebook, so I can always check back if I forget anything. The things I have to look foward to are, practicing with a baton, whistle commands, and many other things. Een though there is time to prepare, I am still rathr nervous, even just going to meetings. I've never been the best with performing by myself in front of many people. I'm hoping that this whole experience will help me get over it. I'd like to ask any previous or current drum majors for any helpful advice they have. Anything would be greatly appreciated.

You can check out the Official Drum Major thread, too, as some more drum majors check there, but I'll give you advice here, too.

Whistle commands are fun. Our band does not use them, but we learned them at Drum Major Academy. Writing down your notes in a notebook is a great idea. Keep doing that. Definitely go to all of those meetings you have. They will make you more comfortable with the tryout material, which will make you less nervous when you try out. I'm curious, what is your tryout like? Is it judged by the whole band, or just by the band director and drum major or something? If it's judged by the band, make sure you talk to people. If you always eat lunch with the same group of people, try eating with some other band kids this next week, just so you can get to know them and they can get to know you. The band usually votes for who they think they can work with, but knowing someone personally helps a lot. ^_~ Good luck!

The people who decide the drum majors are the band director, along with previous drum majors who come back to judge us as well. The only time the band comes into the tryouts, is when we conduct something for them, for example the Star Spangled Banner. Believe it or not, I do have a notebook that I put all my Drum Major notes in. I think your suggestion for hanging out with other people would definitely help. The only thing is then trying to find them on campus. XD But you've sure helped. Many thanks.
