The world was indeed much larger outside of his little wicker basket. But the faintly cool air of night was a releif from the drowning heat of oncoming summer. The little unicorn had been named by his father, but his mother was the one who had left the greatest mark on the young male. flowers... why flowers? That was no marking for a child descending from the lines of Zephyr and Chaos. Flowers... and the silly smell or tangy oranges that seemed to follow him about everywere he went. His mother had something similar, that cloyingly sweet sent of blossoms that you could almost taste on yout tounge. But... to smell like fruit?! that was no way to strike terror into the hearts around you.... thats what his dad did... so isnt that what he should do?

He gave a little snort and continued his exploreing. His brother was behind with his mother for now, learning how to tend to the foliage like orange blossom... but Melancholy was more independant... also he wanted to escape his apperant new nickname from his mother. Lolli was o name for a boy!!

His cream tipped tail lashed back and forth as his eyes, as red as his spiral horn, glanced back and forth. well this was a new place... defiantly farther then anywhere he had wondered off before. At least that is what he though, in the dead of the night it was slightly harder to make out landmarks.

Zara picked her way delicately through the night, not at all intimidated by the shadows surrounding her. She had been crammed tight in her basket for so long, the darkness that surrounded her had not swiftly been forgotten. Night was as lovely as day, just a wee-bit more difficult to navigate. But it held its charms nonetheless. One might not so easily see her stumble or lose her footing, which to Zara was fantastic.

The little pink and blue filly understood the expectations of her family, and that was to meet perfection. Not just in appearance, which thankfully she'd been given a helping hand, but in actions as well. Every step she took had to be lovely, every move she made had to be smooth and exactly in time and with the beat of the world.

Zara was young yet, and had a long way to grow when it came to being perfect, but the little filly was stubborn. Very stubborn and once her mind was made up very little would stop her. As it was, the girl was not afraid to wander away from the protection of her family even at such a young age. Though she knew not where she was going, though she knew not how to get back, she was prepared to continue on if only to see what the night might bring.

And currently it was bringing her towards something fruity. . . something sweet. Peering through the night, the little filly's tail swished softly behind her as she caught sight of someone moving before her. The shadow was bigger than she, but she found herself far from afraid. Curious, of course, but Zara understood manners. . . Deliberately walking closer, pink eyes glint brighter in the moonlight as a smile crossed her features. A small giggle escaped, and she dipped her head in greeting.

Forever was that scent of oranges. . . . .

"Salutations!" She greeted, mimicking the lovely phrase she had picked up earlier that morning. It was night, but she hoped it still applied.

Melancholy stoped dead i his tracks. tail going ridged as he scanned red eyes twords the noise. And there stood another foal. The colt tilted his head. She was... pink? with a slight frame that was made more delicately then his own. She was very pretty, and i unicorn like himself. what was it his father had told him... ? If you meet a girl be kind and try to involve them in what you were doing so you didn't hurt their feelings..... ok.

Aside from his mother she was the first female he had met, so he had to try out this advise of his dad. " Hello there pretty lady " he said, bounding over her, purposefully taking a detour through a blooming scotchbroom, wriggling his body through the popcorn yellow blossoms, covering himself in pollen, leaping from the bush dusted in the bitter smelling pollen. Landing before he smiled friendlily and struck a pose " ... Smell me 8D "

The tangy sweet of oranges floated up around the two, undeterred by the yellow power... as if, if you were to touch the foal he would burst into something juicy and refreshing. It was a pleasant smell, cool and with reminders of summer.... but he just couldest get it to go away. Sadly the foal had yet to realize the sent was permanent, just like the horn on his head. So for now he tried to be friend and follow his fathers advise, and only succeeded in making himself look completely insane.

Zara canted her head ever so delicately, though she couldn't help but giggle again in pride as he called her pretty. This was one of her first compliments ever so she understood she must be doing something right! She was pretty. . . and a lady, even if she were ever so young! Zara couldn't resist the urge to swish her blue tipped tail, and give a small toss of her mane for show - Momma and Papa were both beautiful, so it only made sense she was too. Just like both her sisters!

Still, his actions were a bit strange as the shadowed colt approached. He didn't walk directly towards her, oh no, instead he seemed to bound straight through some blossoming foliage. Odd behavior, no doubt, but Zara wasn't going to judge too harshly - maybe other folk liked to cover themselves in golden dust? Who knew! Perhaps it was some night time ritual she'd never learned about before. . . . either way, her delight didn't diminish too much as he bridged the distance between them.

It was with such a close proximity that she noticed his cloven hooves and horn - so he was a unicorn, just like she! That would make her father happy, wouldn't it? What did he say, something about the great line that ran in them . . . ? Something like that or what not. Regardless of his horn or hooves, Zara wasn't nearly as particular when it came to meeting others. She just wanted to friends - lots of friends - and to conquer the art of perfection and movement. Those were her only goals thus far, and if she were diligent she'd conquer both in no time!

Or so she liked to believe.

"Smell you?" Zara questioned, unable to resist the small giggle at such a request. She thought about it for a moment, but curiousity got the better of her. "It's not a very lady-like think to do, you know," she reprimanded ever so gently, good humor through her words. "But I will, just this once, so long as my Papa doesn't find out." Oooh, she might be in trouble if he did. . . . but it was dark and she was already in trouble for wandering so far! Taking a little unlady like behavior wouldn't be the end of the world, would it?

Leaning forward with her neck, she gave a little sniff, the pollen tickling her nose. Though she caught the scent of the scothbroom, the bitter scent was swiftly overwhelmed by something sweet and lovely. The fruity tang almost made her tummy rumble in anticipation to a snack, and Zara couldn't help be amazed. "It's . . .it's you! You're the delicious one I've been tracking!" Giggles renewed, delighted by this news, Zara forgot herself for a few moments in bliss by this new discovery.

As much as she wanted to be a proper lady. . . she couldn't help but be a filly for now.

" d-deliciouses?! o-o " he asked, hoping this wasn't his new nickname, it was almost worse then lolly! D8 With a sigh he hung his head "I know... How an i supposed to be a great dark unicorn if i spell like this? " he said before turning red eyes up to her beseechingly " I'm so easy to track i might as well just cover myself in firefly's and stand in a clearing " he said, his voice sounding a tad crestfallen.

He blinked at her statement about e lady like " well... you are a lady... and if you are acting that way would that make it lady-like behavior? "he asked, tilting his head to one side curiously, causing the dream catcher braided into his main to sway, the beads clattering against each other.

The young foals goal -the only one so far in his short like -was to join the ranks of the great and powerful dark unicorns. Like his grandfather, his father, and his uncle. At the thought he curled his tail around to whip his flank irritable at the painted oranges and blossom, wich only made the sent rise more.... it smelt like the were standing in the midst of an orange grove.

He glanced at her, she was very pretty, very frilly.... he wondered why her father would be mad at her, all she was doing was makeing friends ' Oh hye, my name is Melancholy, whats your name? 8D "

Zara listened to the young colt's predicament, her little blue furred tail swishing rhythmically behind her as she thought. So he smelled of oranges and yet he couldn't because of a need to be great? And dark? It never occurred to Zara that a dark unicorn couldn't smell so sweet. . . . besides, Melancholy was already dark! His fur was such a dark shade of black it was difficult to see his expression. But, she understood that there were some things in this world she plum didn't know or understand. . . .

While Melancholy wanted to be dark and fierce, Zara wanted to be beautiful and full of grace. It was in the cards for her to be a dancer, for her to learn the art of movement and allure. Given, she didn't understand that now at such a young age and wouldn't even know what allure meant! But such was her fate and currently she was happily oblivious to it all.

"Well, if you were a dark unicorn in an orange field, then they'd never be able to find you!" She giggled lightly, eyes flashing with good humor. Still, she doubted the stranger before her would go for such an idea. Besides, who would want to be so restricted? Hmmm. "Ooooh!" Zara danced from hoof to hoof, shimmying as another idea struck her. "Well you could still be dark! Look at what I did - I followed you here and came to you because you smelled of oranges! You could still be dark and brooding but instead of tracking others, you can let them come to you!" Zara understood she couldn't be the only one who liked the smell of fruit. If she was drawn towards his scent, than surely others would as well. It was a perfect idea, in her little mind, and one that would save him a lot of trouble.

Giving herself a little shake, whipping her blue mane over her shoulder as best she could (it was still quite short) the young filly smiled brightly up at Melancholy. He had a very fitting name, especially if he wanted to grow up and be dark! "It's a pleasure to meet you, Melancholy," she repeated the phrase she had learned when making introductions. Dipping her head in a bow, her tail swishing behind her, Zara giggled before adding, "I'm Zara!" She hoped they could be friends, because currently the little filly had none!

He lowered his head, pointing the scarlet horn to the ground " Pleasure to meet you Lady Zara " He blinked and thought about her statement " I guess your right, i could use this smell to my advantage. 8D " he thought about it.... the sent lured the hungry foes into battle. The Skinwalkers and Kalona hungry and comeing thinking they are finding a tastey treat and finding... wait... hungry skinwalkers...? Finding a smalll and fruit flavored foal...? Suddenly this plan lost its allure and he was worried that if this little filly could have found him.. what else might have followed.

" Uh.... Zara... You didnt see anything follow you did you? " He asked.... his ears straining into the night, trying to picvk out anything unusual from the owls and crickets calls..... and to his horror he heard it.... and soft cascade of footfalls.... the snap of a granch.... a faint growl. Oh God she was right, a skinwalker had followed right up to them! His mind raced, his tail suddenly lashing around " Uh....zara i think we should run..... " The sound was louder now, and from the distance he could see the faint glow of a pair of eyes... followed by yet another growl.

It pleased the blue maned filly that her friend agreed with her logic. She was a smart cookie, that much she understood, so the fact he might have doubted her caused her to want to smile. She wasn't just a stupid girl. . . she was beautiful, and bright, and this ebony little unicorn colt was learning that fast. Her little tail wagged a bit back and forth in joy as he called her Lady - ah, such a title truly deserved to be hers. She, along with her sisters, were meant to be ladies. . . . And Zara was going to make certain such a title stayed.

"Of course I'm right," she giggled, stamping the ground with her cloven hoof as if she approved of such a thought. Which she did. "It's an excellent plan, you know, and I'm quite sure you'll have no trouble attracting - - - " She blinked as the dark colt suddenly questioned her, his entire disposition changing. What had been a sulking little unicorn had quite suddenly transformed in to something more alert and perhaps a little nervous, unsure. Someone following her. . . ?

Ears pricking, she canted her head quizzically at Melancholy before her. What on earth was he talking about now? "Say what?" She blinked, narrowing her magenta gaze at him. "Of course nothing followed me, silly. I think I would have been quite aware if . . . ." Her ears pricked up as she too heard the scuffling of something nearby. " . . .if . . if they had. . . " Her words fell soft now, her confidence wavering. Craning her neck, she peeked in to the shadows surrounding them, suddenly wishing more than ever her father or mother were around. Nothing against her friends fighting spirit, but two little foals against something dark, scary and dangerous suddenly didn't sound very appealing.

Besides which, Zara didn't want to have to run - her mane would get messed up and wind blown and there was a chance she'd get dirty.

". . . . are you sure we - - YOU - - - aren't just imagining it?" Zara's pride didn't allow for her to admit her own fear and her own uncertainty. Maybe this was just Melancholy making all this up, trying to scare her, and her ears were going along with such a plan and playing tricks. "This really isn't funny. . . " She added, snorting softly. Subconciously though, and unvoluntarily, she did step closer to the black colt, taking a little step back behind him.

She'd follow his lead . . .if he ran, she'd be right there with him. But until he took the first step, Zara's pride wasn't going to allow for such a humiliating retreat. She wasn't going to fall for his tricks, oh no!

Melancholy inserted himself between the little filly and the coming presence..... The glint had brightened, showing the eyes ere feral an cyan. A clicking growl floated out from the bushes and he took a step back, lowering his horn slightly like his father had shown him, using his body to push zara away from the... the thing. His tail swished, starting to lash back and forth behind him, a gesture that he did when he was thinking. Those eyes were so low to the ground... the creature had to be slinking, stalking them...

A Snarl burst out of the bushes and be backed up again, decided that whatever it was the two of them weren't prepared for it " Go! " he said, turning again and nudging her towards the path behind them, urgeing her forward.
PostPosted: Sun Jun 01, 2008 9:55 am

Zara's own tail swished nervously, twitching more ungracefully as usual as a wave of uncertainty rolled through. More and more, the little filly understood that this wasn't just a game or some well laid out trick. This was something worse. . . something unpredictable. If she had been tracked why hadn't she noticed? Worse, if the thing had followed her now she had caused her very first and absolute bestest-friend in the entire universe to be put in harms way!

Woe upon woe. . . .

Gulping, a very unlady like thing to do, Zara's ears pinned as Melancholy took a defensive stance. She had a horn too, but it was small and Zara had never thought much about fighting. Her parents were beautiful and wonderful and courageous . . .they weren't meant to fight. She also understood her horn could help wounds, heal them, but the little one again was oblivious on the how. Somehow, logic told her, that even if she did know how to use her horn for good the wounds that this unknown beast was going to inflict on them were far too deadly.

Crap.

"Melancholy. . . " She whispered, afraid that he might be stubborn enough to fight. She reached out, giving his tail a ginger little tug. "It's too big. . it's . . "

"Go!"

Zara needed no further explanation! Biting back a cry of fear, not wanting to look weak in front of her friend, the blue maned lady took off like a light. She dug her cloven hooves in to the ground, little caring about dirt and mud now that someting meaner was behind them. . . Still, she kept glancing back behind her, wanting to make sure her friend was close in tow!

Ohhhhh - where was Papa now when she needed him? Regardless if she'd get in trouble for walking out late and for running in the dirt and being so much unlike a lady. If he could save her and Melancholy, that's all she wanted!

Melancholys tail lashed nervously, and his legs twiched, acheing to run, but he waited for the gloweing eyes to get just close enough.... to hear his friend run, and start her journey to safety. He was terrorfied.....

A growl and hiss, he saw a glint of needle like claws glint from just behind the shadow of a bush... ready to emerge. He turned swiftly, useing those ivory cloven hooves to kick up a giant cloud of the sandry dirt unto the face of the beast. And with that he lowered his head, useing his young legs to follow zara to the best of his ability, his legs letting him fly almost as if he had wings. The tiny pink silver nad blue glimmer was starting to fade, but the screach of rage behind him pushed his body to its limits, and the little shape started to grow. He wold not lose her, he wouldent!

He was posotive his father would not want him to endager him and his friend. She was his best friend, and he would not let whatever that was attack her!! But.... He had no way of keeping her safe if he lost sight of her.

User Image

She was grumpy.... tempest had booted her out... so what if she had tried to steal the foals beads? No reason to kick her out in the middle of the night. And ontop of that she had stepped onto some thorn bushes, her paws sore and throbbing from the little plants.

She chittered, angrily, haveing never learned to speak the language of the sowuili. she understood it perfectly fine oh yes, but her little maw could just not handle it. So she stuf with the sqeaking and the chittering and the growling hissess, they worked all the same. For now she was hissing, ranting to herself about the jerkyness of some stallions. An now there were bushes in her way.In this dark forest she could see well enough, but she could swear her eyes were tricking her. It looked like a giant talking flower was standing on the other side of those bushes and she smelt.. oh!! Oranges!

She started to scramble forward, her empty belly giving a mighty rawr. And she stepped on another thistle. She growled, loud and visiouce, swearing in the raccoon language. She could see more on the other side of the bush... so reached out her paw to sweep it out of the way with her little paws, and was created with only a dash of sand to the eyese, the podwery soil invadeing her eyes and nose. She let out a furiouse screach and scrambled backwards.

She rolled on the ground a bit, pawing at her eyes.... her eyes now red from the scratching... and she looked up to see the hind end of a foal running away... oh she was going to show him a thing or to about being mean to raccoons.

((Sorry for the shorness. ._.; ))

Zara's little sides heaved as she ran, terrified about whatever monster might be behind them. How many glowing eyed beasts were out in the woods and what might they be?! Something big, something terrible and something mean! Oh spirits. . . why was this night turning out so terrible!?

The magenta eyed filly glanced behind her, gasping as a gap seemed to grow between Melancholy and herself! Why wasn't he running fast!?! He was going to get eaten if he didn't hurry! "Hurry up, Melancholy!" She shrieked, eyes wide with fear, certain that the darkness was going to envelop him even as she watched. Whatever was she going to do if something happened to her friend? He was her first friend, which made him her best friend, and if he got eaten by the darkness. . . .

No.

She wouldn't allow it.

Zara slowed in her own run, at least until her black and red-horned friend further bridged the distance between them.
