Delilah held open the door for her mother and smiled as she absorbed the interior of the cafe. It was perfect. Even if she had designed it, it could not possibly have been more perfect. White wrought iron tables spread throughout the open room, breaking up the black and white tiled patter of the floor. The walls were washed with pale pink on top and covered with fine white beadboard on the bottom. Someone had gone a bit mad with paint and added detailed murals of rosebuds, climbing vines, daisies and the like everywhere. "Mama? Can we sit near the window?"

"Of course, Delly." Kova grinned, reaching down to smooth the girl's teal hair back from her face. "Any table you like. It's your treat, right? Because you're a clever girl."

"Thank you, Mama." With that permission granted, Delilah quickly led the way to one of the two tables beside the wide, gracious window that looked out into the back garden. She only barely glanced at the colorful little girl at the other table. Then she paused and looked over to squint more closely. She smiled without realizing it. The girl had a beautiful flower in her hair.

Naomi sat with her daughter, who was greedily picking the raisins out of her scone and devouring them while leaving the bread more or less untouched. Chattering away happily about how she and Fredward (the name she had given to her stuffed tiger) had scaled the highest mountain (which, to Naomi's dismay, had actually been the roof of the garden shed) and defeated the terrible dragon at the top, the girl seemed blissfully unaware of her surroundings.

All of a sudden, though, Kaimi stopped talking and her eyes grew huge as saucers. She stared at the flash of teal hair as a girl sat at the nearby table. And then, without a word, she squirmed out of her chair and went boldly up to the other girl, still staring. So pretty! And she had a flower too! The sweet smell that surrounded Kaimi at all times was fair strong enough to fill the whole cafe in her excitement. "Hi..." Kaimi said, still staring, her usual verbosity lost. She'd never seen someone so pretty.

Delilah turned at the soft word and smiled when she saw it was the little girl with the flower. She approved thoroughly. Anyone who knew that flowers were important was already higher in her view than most others. "Hello," she answered quietly. As the perfume of the little girl hit her, she smiled wider. Her mother watched with both surprise and amusement as Delilah twisted further in her chair to better give her attention to the girl. "I like your pretty flower."

Kaimi did something that, up until this point, Naomi had thought impossible. She blushed. Ducking her head shyly, she grinned up at the older girl. "I like yours too..." She said, shifting from one foot to another. "I'm Kaimi." The little girl added, almost as an afterthought.

"I'm Delilah. Oh, and this is my Mama." She indicated the tall, purple woman vaguely. She was far too interested in this new little plant-girl to be properly polite.

Kova inclined her head and offered brilliant smile of her own. "Hello," she said. "You can actually call me Kova if you like."

Delilah glanced at the grown-up lady at the table Kaimi had left, gave her a faint smile, and then turned her attention back to the other girl. "Would you like to sit with me?"

Kaimi looked back at Naomi, pleading in her eyes. Naomi smiled faintly at her daughter, giving silent permission. As long as the little girl was in eyesight, it wasn't as if she could get into too much trouble... And, despite her extreme youth, it would be good for her. This being the transpersonal psychologist part talking, rather than the mommy part.

Kaimi grinned brightly at Naomi, and then turned her grin to Delilah. "Sure! I would like that! Delilah is a pretty name!" Kaimi said cheerfully. She smiled at Kova, then. "Kova is a pretty name too!" Kaimi wasn't used to interacting with adults other than Naomi, so she made the snap decision that a grownup should be treated just like a not-grownup.

Wriggling up into a chair by Delilah, Kaimi squirmed happily. "Can I touch?" She said, indicating Delilah's flower.

There was only the briefest moment of hesitation before Delilah nodded. Instead of moving closer for the other girl, however, she lifted a finger to signal for Kaimi to wait a moment. Then, carefully, she reached up and plucked the flower from her hair with nimble hands. She held it out in offering, cradled in cupped hands. The flower was brilliant even against her warm skin and the petals moved slightly as if they were breathing. "Here," Delilah said. "You can have this if you like. It will look nice against your other flowers."

Even as she passed it over, there was a fan of slow-growing sparkles at her temple where the flower had been. Within moments, a new one had appeared. Neither Kova or Delilah seemed to react as if this was abnormal.

Kaimi's eyes, already big as saucers, grew somehow even bigger as she took the precious gift carefully. She was speechless, bringing the flower up to her face to smell it and nuzzle the petals against her cheek, delighting in it's satin texture. "Oh!" Distracted by the sparkles, her face broke into an awe-struck grin as a new flower appeared where the old one had been. "It grew back!" She exclaimed. In Kaimi's mind, it was cemented. Delilah was definitely the coolest person she had met in her short life. Tucking the gift in her hair so that it was displayed prominently among the other blossoms she wore, she beamed. "Thank you! It's wonderful!" She clapped a little in her excitement. "It's the best present I've ever gotten! It's even better than Fredward! Fredward is my tiger" She added as an afterthought, waving carelessly back at the table where Naomi sat, sipping coffee and reading a medical journal, the battered toy sitting propped up against a napkin dispenser.

"Oh." Delilah dutifully considered the tiger before waving to him. Then she looked back to Kaimi and smiled faintly. "He's a very nice tiger," she said. "I don't have anything like him. I have a garden in our window, though, and my plants have names. It must be nice for Fredward to be able to come along on adventures with you."

She folded her hands and rested them on the table in front of her. Kaimi was much more interesting than her little plate of cookies and cup of tea. "It's nice that Fredward is over there keeping your mother company. She is your mother, right?"

Kaimi nodded solemnly (or at least, what passed for solemn with the little girl) "Yes. Thats Naomi, she's my mother. And Fredward is very good company, we climbed to the top of the garden shed and pretended it was a mountain. We killed the terrible dragon at the top. I didn't know you could make gardens in windows... our garden is in the back yard. Naomi is teaching me how to tell the weeds apart from the vegetables." She nodded at this important knowledge. It wouldn't do to pull up carrots when one was meant to be pulling up dandelions.

Naomi, for her part, smiled at the two girls and turned her attention back to her journal and her coffee. They seemed to be getting on quite well, and it was never too early for a child to learn the benefits of independence. She kept watch from her peripheral vision and nibbled on her muffin.

"It's not right in the window," Kova corrected as she stirred more sugar into her tea. "It's a couple of window boxes."

Delilah glanced at her mother and nodded as if thanking her for the help. Then she refocused on Kaimi, unlaced her hands once more, and began estimating the size of her window box garden in the empty air for the other girl. "I have a box of purple and a box of blue and a box of pink. Then Mama has a box of green, all the herbs she uses to cook. What's your favorite color?"
PostPosted: Sun May 11, 2008 12:36 pm

Kaimi thought about this question carefully. There were lots of colors she liked... They were all nice. "I think that orange is my favorite color today." She grinned, tucking some hair behind her ear. "We have pots of green plants inside the house, an' a garden in the backyard. Whats your favorite color?" Her little mind seemed as rambling and random as the girl herself, not quite old enough yet to always follow a thread of thought to completion before dancing off to another topic.

"Purple." Delilah paused and wrinkled her nose. "No, pink. Or green." She smiled sheepishly. "I like all colors except black," she explained. "Black is like nightime, you see, and I like the sunshine much more. Even if the stars are pretty and lightning bugs are fun to chase. Don't you think?"
PostPosted: Sun May 11, 2008 9:21 pm

"Black is boring." Kaimi agreed, nodding. "Stars are pretty, though. Whats a lightning bug? Do they come from the clouds? Do they shoot lightning and catch things on fire?" She leaned towards Delilah, eyes wide, waiting to hear what sort of terrible beast these lightning bugs were. Delilah must be very brave to chase them!

A little smile appeared at Delilah's lips and Kova was relieved to see it was sweet and not mocking. She loved her daughter but Del could sometimes be a bit startling with her moods.

Holding up one hand, Delilah demonstrated a tiny space between her thumb and forefinger. "They're tiny," she explained, "and they're bug. They're not dangerous but they're pretty. Mama said that she'll make me a cage for them so I can have a living nightlight."
