Looking around the garden at all of the paired mothers-and-daughters, Delilah could barely resist the urge to sigh. Normally, she loved the freedom her mother trusted her with but, lately, it felt more like neglect than freedom. She scowled and the look was almost shocking on her sweet features. It was all that stupid stone's fault, really. It wasn't even a baby. It shouldn't have her mother's attention.

She gave in to the urge then and sighed heavily. Lifting her head, though, she absorbed the bright colors around her - the greenery, the brilliant flowers, the delicate arrangements spread out through the grounds. That helped at least. It was hard to be truly sullen with such songs around her.

Moving in eerie silence, she skipped over to the nearest decorative archway. Her fingertips barely touched the petals of the clematis and she leaned in to inhale the scent. Very soothing. Quickly, she gave herself over to the enjoyment, ignoring everything else around her.

Cecelia wandered moodily down the color-lined stone pathway. She didn’t much like feeling abandoned, but Elda was doing research, and she knew how he mother got when interrupted while working. It was better to leave her alone with the flower books until she found what she needed.

Taking a deep breath and inhaling the sweet scents of numerous flowers, Cecelia lifted her head from watching her feet. Just because mom was busy didn’t mean she couldn’t enjoy the gardens. Her eyes set forward; she was determined to enjoy herself.

Completely focused on her new goal, she didn’t see the skipping teal-haired girl until after she’d run smack into her.

Delilah reeled at the impact, gasping under her breath. For a few moments, she almost tumbled to the ground but, as her foot stepped across the border into the plants, something happened. Leaves shifted and a few flowers twisted. She balanced herself and delicately stepped back onto the path. Then she fixed smolderingly upset aquamarine eyes on the intruder. "Excuse me," she murmured.

Cecelia’s unusual dexterity managed to keep her on her feet, but she looked to the other girl with utmost surprise.

“OMG! I’m so sorry.” She sputtered, talking way too quickly. “I didn’t see you, are you hurt, is everything okay?”

As if in direct reaction to the speed of the other girl, Delilah took a careful step away and her hand again brushed at the arched trellis over the path, fingertips against petals. Then, when she answered, it was equally slow and careful. "No... I'm alright." She regarded the other girl. "But you might have hurt the flowers so be careful, okay?"

Cecelia frowned deeply, took a big breath, and bit her lip.
“I’m sorry.” She said again, slower this time. “I didn’t want to hurt anything.” She sighed and looked around. “The flowers are really pretty though, I couldn’t see anyone purposely wanting to damage them.”

The honest reaction seemed to mollify Delilah and she relaxed with a nod. "Yes," she agreed. "I like it here. There are a lot of pretty flowers." She regarded the other girl more carefully now. "You have leaves in your hair," she pointed out. "They're nice."

Cecelia, reach up to feel her hair, before remembering the leaves were fake and attached to her ponytail holders; she giggled at herself. “You have a flower in your hair. It’s pretty.” She countered back to the girl, smiling broadly at the other child.

"Thank you." Delilah turned back to the trellis but, instead of ignoring the other girl, she motioned for her to move closer. Reaching out, she touched gentle fingers to petals and leaves until she was almost on her tiptoes to reach. That done, she sank back down and glanced at Cecelia. "See? They're beautiful. My name is Delilah."

“Delilah. . .” Cecelia said the name slowly, trying to get a feel for it. Deciding she liked it, she grinned brightly at the other girl. “They are beautiful.” She replied warmly, something about Delilah made her feel warm and comfortable. She paused for a moment before plowing onward. “My name’s Cecelia, but everybody calls me Cece. I don’t know why they don, but it just a nickname. . .” She tailed off, giggling slightly with the realization she was babbling.

The babbling didn't seem to bother Delilah in the slightest, however. She merely gave the blonde another vague, pretty, little smile. "Cece is a nice name," she answered. Her fingers strayed lightly over the flowers again. "Mama calls me Delly usually. I like my full name just as much, though." She looked back to the flowers. "A lot of people have nicknames," she added. "They're fun."

“Delly. . .” Cecelia pondered the name, while staring intently at the flowers. She shook her head. “I think I like Delilah better, it’s pretty, like the flowers. Delly sound kinda like boys name. . .” She stopped abruptly.

Delilah cocked her head to one side, looking at Cecelia. "I never thought of that," she murmured. "Maybe." Then she sighed. "I can't stop Mama, though. I'll just make sure she's the only one." She nodded firmly. "Thank you. Do you like Cece better than Cecelia? It sounds sort of like a fun game."
PostPosted: Mon May 12, 2008 9:42 pm

Cecelia pursed her lips at the other girl, glad that she wasn’t mad about the “boy name” comment, but unsure of how to answer.

“I never though about it. . .” She said slowly. “It’s been my nickname forever, even before I lived with Elda, who’s my mom now.” She thought a moment longer. “I like to pretend it’s the name of a game tough, I like games!” She smiled brightly.

"What kind of games do you like?" The question was perfectly polite but a close look at Delilah's aquamarine eyes would have revealed concern. She was never one for running about or noisy games.
