Archie looked out of the kitchen window at his former yard and frowned. It had been well over a year since a child had landed here, a fact he no longer worried about, but the bullseye painted onto the grass remained - dull and faded, but it remained. It was hideous! But what did one do about paint on dirt? Archie could think of a few things, actually.

It wasn't long before he was out in the yard on his hands and knees in jeans, a bright orange t-shirt with a cartoon cheeseburger on the front and his sock feet, scraping at the painted spots with one of those miniature hand rakes. It wasn't doing the grass any favors, but at least the old dingy paint was slowly being worn away.

Charlene Phillip Dartsmoore was out on official business today. She’d only had to do one “on Gaia” assignment before. One of the other Guardians had had his soul attached to too many other souls to leave Gaia, so she had to take the deity he would be bonded to to him for the bonding. The Powers That Be were fond of-or really really scared of-Dartie so when a guardian choice came up that was someone she would get amusement out of doing the assignment for, they couldn’t help but inform her of it.

So it was that Dartie was out, with Bailey and Kahlua in toe, to go and see one felty ex-criminal who happened to be digging in the dirt. This was going to be QUITE amusing, she thought as she approached Archie, in his ridiculous attire-for once her’s wasn’t half as ridiculous as his, as she only wore blue jeans and a black T-shirt, and boots today-and smirked.

Kahlua looked around, trying to appear nonchalant about being there. Bailey, on the other hand, was QUITE pleased to be back. He’d liked Francine and wanted to see if he could find her again. She was fun to play with!

Dartie smirked as she walked over. “Yo Archie.” She said, unable to mask her smug amusement at what she was going to have to do in the next few moments.

Scrape. Scrape. Scrapescrapescrapescrapescrape. So intent was Archie on depainting the yard that he didn't notice there was anyone nearby until Dartie spoke. He looked up quickly, too used to having people come to this house that meant him harm. Little did he know...

"Oh, hey, Dartsmoore!" he said cheerfully, leaving the little rake in the grass as he rose to his feet. He dropped his gaze to the kids and he said, "Franny and Alek are inside, um, if you want to see them." Dixie was in the house too, but she wasn't likely to have a negative reaction to a pair of children running around the place, even if one of them was peeling. The other criminal liked kids, especially ones she could observe without actually interacting with them.

"So, in the neighborhood?" Archie asked. Not that he minded visitors, but Dartie was weird, to put it mildly. He liked her well enough, but he always felt like something strange was about to happen whenever she was around.

Dartsmoore grinned. “Obviously, otherwise I wouldn’t be here. I’d be in some other neighborhood. However, as to my reason for being here, I came to see you.” She said smoothly. And quite suddenly her fist hit his face, propelling Archie backwards into the ground he’d been removing the target from. But her punch had done more than that-for now, around the unconcious man’s neck, a magical relic had appeared upon a silver chain, and unseen to them all, his soul was being quickly bonded with that of the god the relic would hold.

“That both did the job, and was rather satisfying. I need to unexpectedly cold c**k people more often. Though the receiving of magical deities through getting cold cocked thing could be done without.” She commented smoothly, before walking over to check and see that she didn’t hurt the man too badly. He did need to care for the little sprat after all.

Kahlua was staring in utter shock at this. All thoughts of looking like he didn’t care were thrown out of the window when he saw his guardian punch someone she had seemed to be on perfectly amicable terms with, and still seemed to be. Bailey on the other hand, was too busy looking towards the door of the house, where he thought he saw someone coming out.

Dixie was trying very hard to ignore whatever was going on outside. Not too long ago, Archie had pushed open the door to her room, told the back of her head that he was going out in the yard, and left her to her studying. Dixie was determined to obtain her Learner's Permit as soon as possible, and somehow she was mistakenly under the impression that the DMV's written test was equal to or harder than discovering a cure for cancer.

She had been in the middle of looking over a series of puzzling hand signals when she heard muffled voices coming from outside. Dixie had ignored them. On the heels of the voices came Francine's excited, "Bailey's mom!" and the sound of the front door creaking open. Dixie had ignored that too. Unfortunately, she couldn't ignore the girl's dramatic, "Oh no!" and the rustle of skirts and patent leather shoes scuffling down the carpeted hall.

"Archie's hurt!" Franny said. The redhead stood in the doorway of Dixie's room, her wide eyes indicating that this was no game of Damsel in Distress. Whatever had happened, Francine, at least, thought it was serious.

Dixie was out of her chair in a moment, thankful for once that her heavy, furry feet didn't require shoes. She pushed past Francine and hurried through the house, out into the yard and to Archie's side, kneeling in the grass and silently making sure her father was still breathing before quickly looking for any sign of injury. Francine hovered near the door, smiling and waving briefly at Bailey before turning her attention to the adults.

Archie's rapidly purpling cheekbone was hard to miss. "What happened?" Dixie asked, finally looking up at Dartsmoore. "Did you give him... jewelry?" She certainly hadn't failed to notice the relic chained around Archie's neck.

Dartsmoore had very interesting expression on her face. It was one most commonly used when someone was telling her a very awkward story about how they’d gotten into a very amusing and embarrassing-for them-situation. Her eyebrows had raised a good deal and were narrowed at the front, her mouth in a thin, closed smile, that opened in the middle to show her teeth Cheshire style as she spoke. “Why yes, I did give him jewelry. Deity soul carrying jewelry. It’s some of the most annoying jewelry ever. It’s unremovable until such time as it turns into a kid, at which point it’s even worse!” she informed Dixie cheerfully, as she found this whole business amusing. “The usual way of going about assigning them is to knock the person out when they’re alone, drag their body off to another plane, do bizarre things to the soul, shove it on a space ship, and leave the person to be sent home after getting told what’s gonna happen to them. But I felt it’d prolly be nicer-and much more fun-to just come and punch him and tell him what’s going on when he wakes up instead.”

Kahlua listened interestedly to the explanation. The toddler remember that his mother had received a relic as well, which had turned into him. He hoped, in the soft insecure part of his soul, that she meant the necklace would be annoying to Archie, and that he himself wasn’t annoying.

Bailey wandered over to stand with Francine. He didn’t really understand what was going on, but maybe she’d explain. He wanted to stand by her anyway.

"It can't..." Dixie muttered, her brow furrowing as she reached for Archie's new necklace. She ran orange-tipped fingers around the chain's length and when she found no catch, she set to pulling it off of his head. Dixie couldn't have explained why she couldn't remove the necklace, she just... couldn't. She sighed and fully sat in the grass, pulling Archie's body up slightly so she could slide her leg under his head. At least this kid wasn't the product of Archie's notorious self control issues. Unless it was, only in a different way...

"Did you do this on purpose?" she asked Dartie. "Maybe as retribution for something Archie did to you? Do you even know him? He's a horrible father." She bounced her knee and Archie groaned, grey eyes fluttering open and slowly focusing on Dartsmoore. "I only turned out all right because I wasn't really a baby when he got his hands on me," Dixie continued.

"Hey, uh, ow," Archie muttered. He shifted his body slightly and pulled the rake he had been attacking the yard with earlier out from under his back. Sharp, stabbing pain taken care of, he reached up to the dull ache in his face, fingers pausing at the relic. He tugged at it, but it didn't budge.

Francine had no idea what was happening either, but she certainly wasn't afraid to ask. "Did your mom hit Archie? I only saw him lying on the ground and went inside to get help." She wasn't about to say it out loud, but she found adult problems exciting. Like TV!

“Oh, no. I don’t pick guardians. Believe me, if I did, the red head would have gone to someone else. He’s a brat.” Dartie said, smirking at Kahlua a bit. She didn’t really mean all of it, but it was fun to tease. “He’s been decently nice to me over the few times we’ve met. If I wanted retribution on him for something, he’d be dead, but I don’t so he’s fine. And the Powers that Be have really really retarded ideas about who’d make a good guardian.” She explained.

Kahlua pouted a bit at his mother’s comment, but snickered at Archie lying on the rake. Stupid man.

Bailey smiled. “YEP!” he said proudly. He wasn’t sure why, but now he felt much more amused by the fact that she’d hit the man than before.

After one last attempt to remove the chain around his neck, Archie concentrated on the conversation Dixie and Dartie were having above his head. Guardian? "Why did you hit me?" he asked, attempting to sit up a couple of times before actually succeeding. Surprisingly, Archie wasn't afraid, only confused.

"She wanted to give you a child," Dixie explained, a smirk touching her lips. Now that she knew what was going on, she found the whole situation sort of amusing. She rose smoothly to her feet, leaving Archie sitting in the grass. "Something about your soul and a deity." Dixie didn't particularly believe in any of the higher powers she had been told she should, so her interest was definitely piqued, even if it didn't show.

"But, I... A baby? God baby?" Archie liked babies, but he was having a hard time remembering the details of the whole god-baby thing Dartie had spoken of the last time they had talked. Plus, his face was throbbing in a very distracting manner. He looked down. "Is it like the god of Cheerios?" he asked. "Hula hoops?"

Francine meant to look concerned, really she did, but Bailey's proud reply made her snicker. She listened closely for a moment before turning to the other child. "There's going to be a baby!" she whispered excitedly. She wouldn't be the new kid anymore! Francine had never actually met a baby, but she imagined they were fun to have around.

Dartie cracked up at the way Dixie put the whole situation, but it was at least semi-restrained, prior to Archie saying the words “cheerios” and “hula hoops” both of which she’d recently come across. “God……..of ******** Cheerios. Ahahahaahaha, that’s FUNNY.” When she finished her bout of laughter-which had seriously scared Kahlua has he hadn’t imagined that she COULD even laugh, especially not like that. “You have the God of the Angellic. His name is Pandanokirin, And he doesn’t look like what people on this crazy planet think of as angels either.”

Bailey shook his head at Francine. “Babies…loud. Boring and loud…Least ‘Lu was.”

Dixie's smirk grew into a rare full smile at Dartie's laughter. She was on the verge of laughing too, until a tug on her leg alerted her to the fact that she should help Archie up before he accidentally pulled her pants down in an attempt to gain the leverage to stand.

Once upright, Archie made several argumentative noises to try to get Dartie to stop laughing, but nothing worked. Upon hearing the name of his future child, the former puppet gaped. He turned to Dixie, which didn't take much movement at all, considering he was using her as a crutch. "That's not a name," he muttered.

"Dixie isn't either. It's a cup."

"Can I call him Panda?"

"Oh," Franny said, her good humor only slightly dampened. Anything was better than faux-baby Danon and his gurgled threats back when they had shared a crib in Catey's living room. "Well, I'd still like to meet one. Especially an angel!" She clasped her hands and hopped a bit in place, surely imagining giant angel wings or something similar. One never knew for sure with Francine.

“I once met someone who said to me ‘there’s no such thing as something that’s not a name’. And the names of the people in her town proved it. I do believe one was named Orangello and she was married to someone whose name sounded like Shi-theed.” Dartie said with a shrug. “Anyway, it was his name as a god, and it suited him. A ridiculous name is required for deities with elephant feet, glasses, and buckteeth, among other things.”

Bailey blinked. “Aren’t elephants those big gray anoomules? Why angel have their feet?”

Archie had no response to that, at least not right away. Dixie's smile shifted from solely amused to a cross between sympathetic and nostalgic. She had fairly elephantine feet herself, under all the fur, and she remembered how unwieldy they had been when she was growing up.

"I guess," Archie conceded. He looked down at the relic, wondering if it could hear him yet. "I'm sorry, Panda."

The yellow criminal shook her head. "Oh, yes, I forgot. I'm Dixie." She held out the arm that wasn't being monopolized by Archie in case Dartie was a hand-shaker. Archie had mentioned the woman in relation to a landing, which Dixie assumed had produced the red-armed boy standing near Francine. "As I implied, he took care of me when I landed here." Dixie's voice had a strange lilt, an accent that hadn't come from the influence of any Gaian languages.

Francine listened to Pandanokirin's description with confusion. "I don't know," she said softly. She didn't have the courage to butt in and ask if her new family member also had giant, fluffy, white wings. She hoped he did. "Maybe he's an angel for elephants." Nearsighted elephants.
