Sohalia drifted in the shallows of the Lake shore, the hairs of her tail and mane drifted along on the surface of the water before slowly sinking as it soaked up more water.

She moved cautiously, feeling carefully with her hooves on the bed below her. The pendant knocked gently against her chest as she moved, the water causing it to bob as she walked in the water. She stopped, sensing that to go any further would mean she would be treading water and she preferred to have her hooves on fairly solid ground. Normally she shunned this kind of cold, despite the sun above, the water had a chill that was clinging to her. The mare was feeling detached, maybe lonely.

The water slowly stilled, only a few drops falling from her mane disturbed the surface and she looked at herself, vaguely noticing that the sun was glinting off the jewels in her mane.
Who are you? she questioned her reflection.

Of course she knew what she was; a Unicorn. She knew her mother, remembered her place of birth. But she also remembered why she had chosen to be so guarded about giving away anything of herself, sharing nothing that was personal about herself with those she had met. But it was hard on her because deep down she had a hope that there was someone out there that she could trust enough to share herself with.

She touched the water with her nose, distorting her face and she turned to walk back out of the Lake.

Vohamanah was enjoying his fluttering about as he normally did. Living it up free as a bird was his way of life. Now that he was older, all those experiences of having gotten lost as a colt were being at least a little useful. He was able to know the lay of the land at least a little better. Which was fine by him. He wanted to know every inch of it. Every time he flapped his butterfly prismatic wings to go off somewhere. He was stepping out onto a new adventure. He was off to meet the great wilderness in all its beauty. He was watching other soquili; occassionally, he got to meet one here or there.

Somehow, he seemed to be a magnet for broken spirited young ladies. He had met three girls in his lifetime outside of his family. Only one of them was very high spirited. It was sad to him to see such a thing. He thought it was such a waste. He would look at them and see everything wonderful about them, all their potential. He wondered why they couldn't see how wonderful and exciting they were? Why couldn't they see how full of life and vibrant their spirit wanted to be? He was an optimist after all. He believed in the greatest of everything. He believed in true love. He believed in love at first sight. He believed in overcoming one's inner demons or behavioral obstacles.

He had been flying across the forests that day. He had been musing on these inspirational thoughts all morning. He was more and more feeling it was his calling and his destiny to light the way for these forlorn females. Bring hope to those who were drowning in pits of inner despair. He would bring a light noone could see or touch; he would be its bearer. He would venture forth; to bring it to those who needed it the most. He felt almost heroic at that moment. The sun touching his horn on his forehead. The light was gathering in his wings nad his horn. The dewdrops that were always upon his pelt radiated. He stopped to take a break at the lake below. His hooves touching onto the ground, and his wings folding gently against his back. He bent his head to the water, his golden locks wafting towards the ground.

She shook; dog-like almost, glittering water droplets falling to the ground around her. Sohalia huffed upwards for she could feel strands of her mane across her face, some had no doubt curled around her horn. She shook again, then rubbed her head against an upraised leg, trying to sort out her hair problems.
The tail was easy, it had nothing to snag on and had dropped in a slightly sodden heap behind her, it had straightened but the waves would return as it dried.

'Well..' she raised an eyebrow, having caught sight of the glittering jewel that had descended to the Lakes edge. She watched him unabashed, her blue eyes taking in all that this stallion was.

He was as light as she was dark, he had the air and she was stuck to the ground. He seemed to, to twinkle. She smiled softly, and wandered over to introduce herself. After all, she had just been dwelling on how she felt, maybe this was a sparkly little gift just for her. At the very least she would find out more about him, even if this was one fleeting time that they met, and he never got to know anything of her.

Vohamanah began to lap at the water. He noticed the impact tremors which meant someone was coming. His journeys across the soquili lands had taught him that. As it drew closer, his ear flickered. He decided it wise to stop drinking and to prepare in case it was something dangerous, not being one to run away from that which he could overcome; and, he always believed he would overcome. That was who he was. He always believed there was a way.

As he stepped up and puffed his chest out full of bravery, he looked and saw a very dark visage approaching him. It was mostly black. Then, he saw little bits of hair fly, and he saw little blue beads. Ah.. another soquili. Perhaps it was someone who had lost their way. He could play their angel, and he would lead them to safety, if that was what they wanted. He nodded his head up and down a few times, and he stomped the ground with his right hoof as a way to greet the stranger. "Hello and well met, Stranger!"

He trotted over to meet her halfway. What kind of hero would he be to anyone if he couldn't learn to do that much with out second thoughts. As he got closer, he saw the more blue markings in her hair and around her. He then noticed how the sun caught a small jewel around her neck. It reminded him of his brother's locket. "Greetings! My name is Vohamanah. I come in peace. I may help you to safety if you require it." He stood up straight as he could, shaking his mane out. He tried to look as much the epitome of someone who could help.

That amused Sohalia a little; after all if anything he was slighter than her, he wasn't a pure Flutter, but still, he looked delicate. He was stunning to see though.

'Hello to you too.' she replied, her head canted to one side, her horn flashing slightly as the sun caught it. She sometimes wondered how she looked to another, dark as night with blue stars she thought, but that was just a silly romantic notion.

'I'm Sohalia.'
As soon as she said that she blinked. It was the first time she'd been open with her name right from the start.
'I would find it difficult to see you coming in anything but peace, but I suppose it would be a very convincing cover if you did have malicious intent.'

She looked at him, curious;
'Do I look lost then?'

Vohamanah took a moment to appraise her and look her over. He admired how bright and sparkling her unicorn horn was. The flecks of blue on her hair were very nice. Made him think of flecks of light in deep water. Not that he himself had ever seen those kinds of depths. He had, however, seen artworks of some two-leggers who painted such things. It also made him think of deep caverns, with jewels popping out of walls in dark corners.

He smiled to himself as he began to wonder if she were a jewel that was hiding behind a curtain of protection of some sort. He smiled and lifted his head high. "Oh, I do beg your pardon. It is my fault. I just made a poor assumption. It has just been my luck as of recent to only seem to run into ladies who need some help. I don't really mean lost in terms of knowing where they are. I think... They were lost in just not knowing themselves... Who they were.. what they wanted for themselves.. always doubting and never willing to look beyond what meagerness held them back. Perhaps you aren't lost. I'm glad to hear it. It is a reassuring blessing to be affirmated with one's inner self. It is fundamental to know yourself. Then and only then, can anyone find true happiness."

While he felt a tad silly for jumping a gun and making blatant assumptions. He also felt tremendously impressed of her. He knew all the beautiful soquili of this land couldn't all be so down trodden in spirit. He believed there had to yet be some who were not so overcome in spirit.

She looked sharply at the stallion as he spoke of meeting mares that had been lost in their own personal experiences. Had he been listening, spying on her when she had stood in the water? Sohalia calmed herself after a moments reflection, she was sure she would have heard his approach, or even scented him if had been close enough to hear her words.

'We all have our own demons in our life,' she merely replied.
'Some have a past that colours who they are, overshadows them. You call that insignificant? It's hard, to be yourself when you know that open-ness leads to downfall.'

The unicorn mare frowned. What was this? First she had given her name with no hesitation, and now she was being frank about feelings. She hadn't directed what she had said at herself, but if he was smart enough he could probably read betwixt and between.

Vohamanah looked at her steadily. He listened intently at her words, his wings twitching sometimes. It was the downside to having wings. It felt bizarre to let them just sit there doing nothing for too overly long periods of time. He blinked and looked down at the dirt under his hoof.

Then, he looked back up at her with a smile and what could almost be pleading eyes. Not a pleading for his own sake, but he always felt like he was championing someone else's case. His eyes moved to meet hers. "I think insignificant is a tad harsh a term to use. However, what you see as foreshadowing or leading to a downfall, I see as just part of the journey. Life is a journey to be had. Yes, there are always going to be times of ups and downs for everyone. The downs help us to value and appreciate the ups for how good it is. If everything were always a walk in the sunshine, we could take it for granted so easily. I believe life is a gift. It's given to us to choose what to do with it. So.. then.. do you just sit back and allow yourself to be victimized of it's circumstances? Or, would you rather be proactive towards finding your way through it? You feel much more confident in yourself when you are able to brave the wiles life throws at you. After all.. the quickest way between two points is straight through of course."

He realized he was starting to turn into one of those ... preachy types. He was building himself a proverbial soapbox. It wasn't originally what he intended. Still, this filly was obviously had a head on her shoulders. Why cast a shadow over what would be someone of beauty and vigor with an air of defeat.. brought on by herself. If he could say at least one thing to encourage her not to do that, he was willing to take the chance.

'You contradict yourself you realise? You allow that life has good and bad times, yet you were glad to believe that I was as happy as you think everyone should be. The world isn't like that. Have you ever been hurt? Do you know who your father is, is he a good stallion? Can you honestly tell me that in your life you've had a time when you felt overwhelmed?'

Sohalia looked at him, his optimism was undeniable, it shined along with his looks, but it was unrealistic. She shook her mane, trying to calm herself after the outburst. She wasn't often this outspoken, but his attitude had riled her.
He was blinkered. What he wanted was everyone to be joyful, just because he was.
'You have to learn acceptance. You claim to want to help, but what you really want is to surround yourself in those who fit into your ideal. Everyone has flaws.' she said in a pointed fashion.

Her words pierced him. That hadn't quite gone as expected at all. Her words were biting. He walked up to her a little more. He walked till he was right up alongside of her. He tilted his head to look towards her. "I do know who my father is. He is an epistle of the kind of stallion I'd like to be. My father's name is Mythril. Maybe I don't see things quite so jaded because I grew up in a happy family. I had both of my parents there. They loved on all three of us. They even took in another stray foal who was alone and starving in the world. Our whole family are a band of soquili who believe in great, beautiful, and wondrous things. We believe that they are out there for us. My parents found it.. why shouldn't it exist for me? And.. who's to say that we should be the only ones to find it?"

Then he flicked his tail as he pondered to answer her other part. "Well, if I ever have a time when I feel at all overwhelmed in the slightest, it has only been now. I come to you with happy and good tidings. You yell and me and act like I just said something insulting to you. Just because I acknowledge the bad things; that doesn't contradict that I believe people can still be happy. One brief time of one's life that's hard and difficult. It doesn't need to overshadow the rest of their life. It's possible to walk through those dark days of one's life still holding joy inside... believing for the best."

He then turned around and walked to the pond to drink a little. Honestly, he hadn't really known what to say. He just felt like he wanted to answer her in something. He was hoping his answers wouldn't further upset her. Maybe his good tidings opened up a proverbial can of worms he hadn't expected. Then again, he hadn't ever happened on an experience or a soquili who gave him any reason to think otherwise. He really was absent of the first hand knowing what it's like to grow up and go through the really hard of hard times.

'Then you need to understand something little Flutter,' Sohalia stepped away when he came right up to her, not liking him encrouching her personal space when they had only just met.

'That, that family that you have. The closeness, and the security that you can always have someone to go home to. You're lucky to have that. You should cherish it, but you should understand that not everyone had stability.'
His words didn't bother her, she'd obviously already dented his impression of her by being who she was.

'These words I speak. I have never told anyone else.' she spoke to his back after he had walked to the water.
'I wasn't yelling at you. Not even close. If you can't take my words, the pain and the truth in them then go now. Enjoy your happiness. But maybe you'll remember that you are blessed, and things could have been bad for you.' she paused, inhaling and then letting out a long breath, maybe he would be gone before she had even finished, but holding everything in had gotten painful.

'I never knew my father. There was bad blood somewhere along the way between he and my mother. He betrayed her. I don't know where my mother is. She left me one day. Just went one night, I found her gone in the morning. I only know that she had confided a great secret in him, he spoke of it and she became an outcast. The one she most loved betrayed her confidence and it shattered her. I never wanted to go through the same thing, I rarely even tell anyone my name.'

Sohalia looked out across the water, watching a bird wheel across the Lake surface, lost after saying so much.

Vohamanah truly meant well when he had approached her, but he was by far and wide quite a naive stallion with ideals and notions exalted above the clouds in their sky. He had been drinking and listening. He for the moment didn't really say much, but he didn't run off either. He wanted to figure out what it was that he should say in this moment. What was the right thing to say? Or.. was it right to say anything? He really wasn't sure. While he had previous brief meetings with several other mares, he never really ever gotten past polite hello's and the like. Still, she wasn't backing down.

When she started to devulge the secrets of her heart, he stopped drinking, but he held his head low to the water as though he were. He twitched his ears at times, but he listened intently. At times when he could almost feel her emotion, his wings would lift a tad and then set back down. It was true. He couldn't see the world from the standpoint of someone who had endured great trials and tribulations. His mother had them herself; but the family he was born into was mostly void of such things. They had a peaceful and tranquil life.

He lifted up his head to look back at her. His sky blue eyes watching her. He listened to all she had to say. He figured there couldn't be too much he could say to change what had happened to her. For the first time, he found himself failing to think he could just say something that was glitter and sunshine. He didn't know what to say, and he was starting to feel like to say nothing was better than to say the wrong thing and make her burden feel all the more heavy. Rather, he just stood and watched. His silence wasn't judgemental or harsh in anyway. He just stood there watching her. Like, he wished he could do something that just wiped away her bitter realities. He wished he could rewrite her world with blazing like as the vibrance of his own wings.

"Sohalia, would you maybe want to come stand... by me here? Let us look at ourselves in the water." He didn't know if she would or want to. She had stepped back when he got to close. He didn't really understand that either. For someone who claimed to be so withdrawn, he seemed to find her rather full of emotion and rather vehement. What drove such a dark beauty into such steepness of heart.

Her head tilted upwards, shutting her eyes against the emotion that threatened. Sohalia stomped her foot out of sheer frustration; why, why did she have to let that all come out?

She let out a noise, dropping her head, eyes still shut tight. At least he hadnt uttered some inanity, spoken anymore about 'life is a gift', and 'life is a journey'. She was well aware of both of those, but not everything you got given was welcome, and journeys were often hard and trying.

The mare finally opened her eyes, looking over at Vohamanah when he spoke.
'Why?' she asked, her voice pained.
What was he trying to do? This was all uncharted territory for her as it was, as she had told him, anyone she usually met got little more than her name. If she did get into conversation with someone, they would get sketchy, evasive details about her own background, she had a knack for letting Soquili talk all about herself and never give anything away of herself.

She moved to stand beside him anyway. Close but not. The water was smooth, like glass.
'What do you see, when you look at yourself?' she asked after a period of silence.
PostPosted: Sun May 11, 2008 10:28 am

Vohamanah now was faced with a question that would lift the curtain to reveal a little of what was his trait that was unpleasant. Everyone had something about themselves. While this pretty mare had thought his over optimistic and unrealistic way of looking at the world as annoying, that was hardly what would be a personality quirk to bother others. However, he had a flourishing self adoration. He did in fact like to look at himself sometimes. He wasn't quite a nymph who'd do nothing but gawk over himself all day long. But, if he saw himself, he would look for a moment. He considered himself to be striking. Out of his siblings, he had inherited what some considered the best features of both his parents.

He looked down, and he tried to make it look like he was looking casually. After a moment, he looked over at her. He looked at her reflection. She really was quite lovely. "Ok. You know what? I'll be honest. Won't even lie to you. When I look at myself, I see a stallion with gold of the sun in his hair. I see the gold of the earth in my unicorn horn. I see light of the beauty of sunrise and sunsets in my wings. How did I get so lucky to have my profile kissed by nature this way?"

He started to lift his eyes and look sideways to her. He knew it was risky to say something like that. It could likely come off extremely egotistical. He knew that. He didn't personally consider it egotistical; but rather he considered it only to be the truth. A positive one at that. He smiled though at looking at her. "When I look at your reflection, I see someone who looks incredibly lovely. Even if her heart hides behind a cloak of jaded broken dreams and loneliness. I see someone who can be anything she wants to be. No matter what she says of where she's come from or the things that prevent her; she has a lot of gusto and heart. I'm positive she could do anything if she put herself to it."

His eyes looked up to her, trying to catch her eye. He tried to smile; he wanting very much to maybe coax a smile out of her too.

Sohalia listened to his pronouncement quietly. She supposed she could agree with each and everyone one of his points but it seemed unnecessary as he was obviously well acquianted with how good his appearance was.

'You say that after little study I would imagine, and I would be uncharitable to disagree' came her reply, as she looked at his eyes in the reflection rather than directly at Vohamanah.

His words about herself weren't as easy to take, and she turned her head away from him as he spoke, only looking back at the water when he had finished waxing lyrical.

'I see..darkness. I see a life of holding others at a distance because I don't know if I can ever trust anyone other than my mother.' her voice sounded plaintive as she looked at the stallion.
'I am who I am. And I don't know if...' she stopped the end of the sentence, and then asked of him.
'What would you do? Would you know how to trust again, that if you did give your innermost self to another, that they wouldn't betray you?'
