'Cause in her plastic flower garden there's...

I currently have a Fender Precision Bass(wine red, very beautiful), but I've heard that Thunderbirds are good, and I found one at a shop that I liked. Could anyone explain the main differences in sound, such as grungy-ness or clean-ness, etc. to help me decide which to play.

Also, keep in mind that I play in a punk band.

Couple things about buying any instrument.

DONT LISTEN TO ANYBODY ELSE.

Okay, maybe that's a little extreme. You should listen to people that know what they're talking about, like people that repair instruments for a living.
That said:

The Precision is great for punk style bass. I'm assuming you play with a pick and that works great with the P's single split-coil. It's a very clean, punchy tone. As for the Gibson, I've never cared for Gibson basses at all. They feel cumbersome and are boomy and just sound bad to my ear. When it come to buying an instrument, it's all about what you like though. If the Gibson feels and sounds nice to you, it wouldn't hurt anything other than your wallet to get it.

I would say personally I like thunderbirds over P basses. I don't really like fender that much. Now I'd say for playing punk a P bass is probably way better then a Thunderbird. Thunderbirds are really low, and don't have a lot of crunch. The Thunderbird is more for rockish/metal bands that need a warm low kind of bass. Though if you really want some thing with thunder or a good range I'd say go for a warwick standard corvette, or a musicman stingray. I like the shector stelleto series personally right after the corevette, but I don't know how a stelleto would handle punk, since I played it how I wanted it to sound.
Most important thing to do with instruments is try befor you buy unless you all ready know what you are getting.

If you want a really punchy growly tone get a P-Bass.

My personal philosophy is to go with whichever sounds better to your ear. It's your instrument, you're opinion of what sounds good is all that matters.

That having been said, I personally would go with the P-bass. While they're not my favorite in any sense, I prefer them to the Thunderbird on any day. But that's just how I feel.

Remember, it's all what you like.

I've heard dreams like this could last for never and ever

Thanks. It seems that P-Basses are better for punk music (I've always kinda felt that), which is lucky because, like I said, I already have one.

I've heard stories how they crash
