Notes from Hawaiian Culture eh? umm... Kinolau is their body forms not their responsibilities. Malama is what they are God/Goddess of not their body forms. They are two different things.

Kahahana My teacher was saying something about one big mysterious god named 'Io that was supposed to be the supreme god. Not talked about much. `Io is an interesting God. Supposedly he was the original God of Hawai`i who was forgotten/destroyed when the invaders from Tahiti came and brought the kapu system and Gods who we traditionally consider as Hawaiian. Some say that he is the God who created all other Gods. Apparently there are stories of him elsewhere in the Pacific. I personally find stories of him somewhat suspect, especially since worship of him only "reappeared" after Christians came to Hawai`i. But whatever, to each his own. Other Gods Kaiona Blind and Deaf Goddess of the Wai`anae mountains on O`ahu. She helps lost travelers who invoke her name by sending her pet bird (who some say is an `Iwa, others a Lale) to guide them out of the forest. There doesnt seem to be much information on her. Kumauna God subordinate to Ku who dwells in the valley that bears his name in Ka'u on Hawai`i. The Iholena banana is his kinolau. Pele turned him to stone when he refused to kill Lohiau. He is worshiped as a rain God to this day. Ka`onohiokala God who dwells in the Sun. I dunno anything else about him. Hauwahine Mo`o Goddess who guards Kawainui on O`ahu. There are a set of rocks overlooking the marsh were she used to bask in the sun. Theres a ton more Gods in Hawai`i, most of whom are probably forgotten. E Kahahana, he maikai maoli no kou olelo Hawaii! Nanea mau hoi au i ka launa pu ana me na hoa olelo Hawaii, a o oe wale no hoi ka mea olelo Hawaii au i ike aku ai ma Gaia! HULO!

It was used with kupuna during the common age for children who'd sleep.

I think you should include the Hawaiian Cosmogonies as well. Not just the main one either but all of them. Explaining how their beliefs are so closely related to the theory of evolution and this was before that theory was even dreamed of. The Hawaiians were actually a very advanced culture when it came to philosophy and intelligence. The Chinese and the Europeans were very mechanically evolved but their philosophies and care for the land suffered because of that focus.

A goddess I had a pretty hefty stint researching was Poliahu, Goddess of Snow/Mauna Kea and Pele's rival. She's not mentioned often, but she's pretty interesting. If you want to know more, let me know. I just don't want to go off on an unwanted tangent sweatdrop

Also in response to the first post, wasn't Kanaloa also believed to be the god of all things harmful to humans? (poisonous foods etc.)

Wakea and Papa are also one of the many gods and goddess. They are also the creators of man kind, and the direct root of the ali'i genealogy.
