My cousin just found out from the doctors that her little boy (he'll be two in June) has 80% hearing loss in both ears. Right now they're trying to see if they'll be able to do hearing aids, but they're not sure if it'll work.

Did an ear infection do it? Little kids, especially that age, are so prone to those.
Anyhow, that sucks, but it could be a lot worse.
My grandma got Scarlet Fever when she was five, and though she lived, she got stuck with like 50%... confused
And in her older years we all started to suspect that things she "couldn't hear" she was just pretending not to hear. xd She was funny like that.

Yeah, that is a bummer. At least it's not something like a terminal illness, though.

that's really sad. 80% hearing loss should be fixable with hearing aids. but only to a certain degree, a child really needs to be at a ceratin age before hearing aids are that beneficial since younger children have a tendancy to take them out, or forget to put them in.

At least he's young. I know that sounds really, really warped, but it'll mean that he has less adjusting to go through, whether or not hearing aids are a possibility (i.e. he doesn't have the same level of trauma as an older child to experience if they're not and if they are an option, he'll grow up accepting them as just a part of life, again meaning less trauma)
On a related issue, did anyone hear about that boy a while back who'd had a cotton bud or something stuck in his ear, and noone noticed, so he was left almost deaf for something like a year?

We all suspected something was wrong when he wasn't hitting the usual stages of child development. My cousin was basically in denial. Of course anyone would be. No one wants something wrong with their child. So they started taking him to the doctor. They flushed out his ears amoung other things. They've just now figured out that he has the bad hearing. He also failed his vision test, but bad eyes run in our family and he barely failed so no one is worried about that.
They're not sure how it happened. However right now they don't believe anything mental is wrong with him.
Only problem is is that hes already a year behind on talking and stuff. Right now they're going to find out if hearing aids will work. I'm sure they will. If not they're going to have to teach him sign language. If thats the case I'm going to learn as well.
