So, I've found that often times, people who play RPGs online come up with images for their characters. Here on Gaia, the easiest would be the editing of the avatars to fit the character, but on other mediums, such as chat rooms, the character photo may be just that... a photo.
I myself spent many years RPing in chat rooms and learned to edit photos to match my characters.
I was curious if anyone else did the same? Or... what you guys think about that kind of thing?

I sometimes search for images that are close to my character concept as well. A little line here...and a few over there...presto!!! Also Tektek is useful for making something even if you dont have the gold. My sig right now is actually a rendition of my character in the Vampire game.

I draw mine. They aren't great, but I enjoy it, and prefer it to taking other people's work.

I can understand that, Aienn.
For me, though, the art of editing an image is kinda like mind-mapping the character sheet. It usually takes me a day to finish an image, working about 10 hours or more on it. Mostly, I use models that aren't exactly in the 'star light' or whatever they call it. Faces of people that not many people know. (Though, I'll admit to using some movie stars as well.) It all depends on what face fits with the image I have in my mind.
Once I find a really good picture, It's just a matter of inserting some of the character personality into the work, and testing my own limits as well as the character's. For me, it's not so much taking someone else's work, as it is using it as a jumping off point for something of my own.
The best challenge (and accomplishment) was taking a black and white, and re-coloring it by hand. That was exciting, and frustrating at the same time smile Learning to edit an image to look like an elf (ears and all), or to re-color a picture, or to edit in different clothing to shape the image, is to me, alot like working clay into a vase or something. Someone else makes the clay... then I get to work with it to shape it.

Almost everyone who plays character has always tried to make picture of it to my experience. With reference pics, witch are also handy for ST's too, drawing, asking friend to draw and so on. I like that habit, it helps with immersion. I draw a lot of my characters. Mostly just sketching quickly while playing, so none of those are actually 'artpieces'. Those do held some memory, scene from the game or remind of one. With Father Andrej at Vampire the Masquerade: The Great Jyhad game there, I haven't gotten yet anything that I'd be satisfied enough. He is mule account, Veddhartha. Being ice breaker here in good and in bad, I dare to link two quick things here. Ragabash Stalks your Daughter and my avi illustrated. The DogI used to have pen mouse, witch I liked not so much. It didn't work as it should have and now I need new one to be able really color things with comp. It's pain in the a** with normal mouse. I did love the one at work. Its for technical drawing and CAD. You draw on the screen with it. <3

I usually describe mine in great detail myself as well, although sometimes a pic will jump out at me. This time I think i'm going to give Tektek a go, cuz well, when you have an avatar, what better way to display your char?

When I took some design classes for Theatre, I learned how to collect a lot of pictures and designs as "inspiration". It forms a collage that gives you an overall idea of what you have in mind. For those that don't actually draw very well, the collage itself might be a good way of leaving an impression of their character. I sometimes even use different images with a little digital melding (not everything is actually photoshop) and create something new. I often make avatars for my friends on our forums (non-Gaia). I do like to have a visual image of my character so that it helps me get into character. smile

I actually use Heromachine, myself. It only cost about £3-5 and I've gotten so much use out of it it's unbelievable. However, when I find that I really can't develop what I'm after in Heromachine, I turn to probably the best tool for this sort of thing: one's own imagination. Often, it's probably best to just describe the character as you know exactly what you want and can create some severely brilliant characters. Only problem is, though, that you might find yourself referring to famous characters, i.e. "... sort of like Aragorn's [insert whatever here] but..." Otherwise, though, give the programs a try, they're great little doohickeys, and the picture in your head.

I edit anime blanks for my characters. I used to use Hero Machine, but it doesn't work for my characters anymore.

I myself tend to spend lots of time on sites like deviant art. Looking for things that look like what I want. I mostly do it for myself just to get a better image of the character in my head. Most of the Real Time games I am in I tend to describe the character from what I see in my head.
