An unusual package arrived at my lab this morning. I can't imagine what it could be. The label appears to be handwritten, though how the postman ever deciphered the cryptic scrawl I will never know. Anyway opening it will have to wait. It can't be anything important, I don't recall ordering any more glassware so it can wait 'til I get home. My boss is already glaring at me for taking time in my lunch break to write to my blog. I guess I can't blame her. My head hasn't really been in my work today. I've dropped two beakers already.
I just, I don't know.
I love my job but lately I have been having trouble concentrating. I guess it's all still so new and there is always so much to do, always another deadline rushing headlong towards us.
Ah well it'll all be fine right?

How odd.
You may remember I made a post about a package that turned up at work yesterday. Well I opened it this morning over breakfast. Inside was a box filled with straw or raffia or somesuch. Nestled within it was a little glass orb. Looks like some sort of paperweight. It's sort of black and purple in colour, kind of swirly. You know the sort of thing. There was a note too but I'm damned if I can make out what it says. It's just signed J-squiggle.
I'm not sure I know anyone whose name begins with J. There's a James in the lab next door to mine, but we have hardly ever spoken. Why would he send me a paperweight? Why would anyone send me a paperweight!? It's not as if it's my birthday.
I've put it by my laptop, it's looking at me right now.
The other extremely odd thing is that it's not cold like glass should be. It's slightly warm and seems to hum when you touch it. Just very gently. I don't know what to make of it.

I’m sorry I haven’t had a chance to post in a while. Work has been absolutely manic! Our research has been progressing in leaps and bounds. Never mind meeting deadlines, we’re currently moving further, faster than we’d ever imagined. It’s astounding. Amidst all the excitement I can’t help noticing that this increase in productivity all came about since I received that mysterious package. I guess it’s my lucky charm.

I told my colleagues about my lucky glass orb theory. They looked at me with amused cynicism but have decided to name it our lucky mascot. They also suggested that since it is our lab mascot now I should name it. Personally I never was much good at names. I let my little brother name my pet hamster when we were little. How in the name of all the gods do you go about giving a name to a glass ball?
I’m going to brew myself a nice hot cup of tea and think about it for a while. Thinking of tea I think there might still be a couple of cookies left in the cupboard. Mmmmmmmmmmmm

Well I’m still struggling with the idea of naming this thing. How do I even decide whether to give it a boy or a girl’s name? I guess I’ll have to find something fairly neutral but seriously, even naming a dog would be easier than this. At least there are some well established “doggy” names like Fido or Rover or Fluffy what do you call what is basically a piece of coloured glass. Damn why did I ever tell my Co-workers about it? I bet they’re in the office laughing at me. I haven’t been able to concentrate on my project properly since because every time I get started my mind wanders off on a naming-glass-balls kind of track.

I’ve got it!
(What a thing to start a blog post with. I feel like I should be shouting Eureka!)
But I do have an idea. I’m having difficulty concentrating on my project because of the orb. Why don’t I just pick a name from one of the plants I’m studying? Let me see. Well I have tomato plants and Arabidopsis. Neither of those would make very attractive names. Well tomato is in the family Solanaceae as are some of my favourite plants including peppers and deadly night shade. How about some derivative of that? Maybe Solan? Is that too masculine? But then Solana might be too feminine. Solan I think will fit. I hope my lab mates approve.
And now back to work

My Lab mates loved the name. It really seems to fit now, almost as if the orb knows its name. I’ve taken to talking to it when I’m working. Mostly just thinking things through out loud, asking it the questions I am currently pondering and muttering my workings out at it.
It’s very warm outside at the moment and although the lab has temperature control the office does not so we have all the windows open. We’ve got a nice through-breeze going but I am thankful for Solan, holding all my papers down for me whilst I scribble or type something else.

Another hot day. The orb seems to be positively gleaming today, as if it prefers this hot weather. Having the curious and scientific mind I do I tried a quick experiment during my lunch break. I left the orb in one of our sample fridges for fifteen minutes. When I went to retrieve it the colours had definitely faded and it seemed to me that it gave off the same sort of vibe as a dog that you left at a kennel whilst you went on holiday.
Will you listen to me? I’m turning this thing into some sort of bizarre pet. That experiment was hardly scientific, the faded colours most likely just in my imagination. As for the feeling of hurt abandonment emanating from it, well that is just mad. I’m going mad. At least I’m in the right profession for it.
Muahahahaha!!
I can't believe I just typed that.
