Yes! Guillermo del Toro has been signed on to do "The Hobbit". I liked what he did with "Pan's Labyrinth", so here's hoping.

But if they don't cast Ian Holm as Bilbo, I shall be extremely annoyed. Come on, people, he was born to play that role! And Bilbo was in middle age in the book anyhow.

Del Toro is the finest fantasy director alive (Pan's Labyrinth and Devil's Backbone are good signs of that one, and even Hellboy), so this gives me hope for the project.

The book would not have suited the same style they did for LOTR at all, after all.

Sir Ian McKellen is apparently officially Gandalf now.

Come on, what about the other Sir Ian? Please?

For those of you with an interest, Senor del Toro and Mr Jackson did a web-chat:

I'm bouncing with anticipation, but too bad I have to wait until 2011...

Nice to see Ron Perlman pretty much confirmed as being on board.

I'm just wondering about this bridging film that they're working on. As much as LotR mostly (Arwen: Warrior Princess in the first film notwithstanding) caught the spirit of things when they didn't work to the letter of the book, I have to wonder how they'll cope if they try to fill in the gaps in those bits of the timeline that Tolkien actually wrote.

Bridge film's now been dropped- they're splitting the book over two films instead, and adding the necromancer.

Adding the Necromancer? You mean they weren't going to use him before?

Oh, I get it, while the book skips entirely across the Necromancer except "this is where I leave you guys on your quest because I have pressing business on the other side of Mirkwood" (until the Council of Elrond explains things properly), we're actually going to see this part?

I love the Hobbit, but I wouldn't have thought there was enough material for two films. The Necromancer and Dol Guldur are going to require a fair bit of padding. Mind you, I imagine the Battle of the Five Armies will become epic...

Y'know, I've really gone off Del Toro since he came out in favour of releasing a convicted ****** on the grounds that said ****** makes pretty films.

Which is a pity - I was looking forward to this until then...
