There was something brushing against his cheek.
He frowned, raising a gloved paw to swipe at it before nestling back into his bed. The birds were chirping rather loudly this morning, and he mentally sighed and rolled over only to have something light once more brush against him, on his nose this time.
Xelon grumbled and sat up, opening his eyes in time to see a leaf fall from his face. A leaf? The Kitsu blinked, slowly looking around him. Instead of four walls, there was nothing but an expanse of trees. What was he doing sleeping in the middle of the forest?
With a groan, he rubbed his face and brushed his tangled hair from his eyes, stopping when he noticed holes in his gloves. One hole for each...claw.
"Oh, no..." he whispered to himself. Claws meant full moon. Full moon meant rampaging. Rampaging meant destruction. He furrowed his brow as he tried to remember what had happened.
There was a grass field, their house just over the hill... and Zweix. Xelon shot up from his sitting position, whirling around as if expecting his daughter to be there. Where was she? Was she alright? The half-Nobody growled and covered his face with a paw. Oh, how she must hate me... He began making his way out of the forest and in the general direction of the house, all the while mentally berating himself and worrying over his eldest daughter.
"Rise and shine, sleepyhead," came the call as Kyo pulled back the blinds from the windows. He went over to pat Zweix lightly on the head before going to pull the blinds from the windows in the other rooms. Sunlight poured into the house, and he stopped momentarily to soak up the rays. They felt nice on his white fur as he opened a window to let in some fresh air.
The house was strangely quiet this morning with both their father and their noisy brother absent. And naturally, there was no one to make breakfast. Kyo twitched his ears as he peeked into the kitchen. The well-learned Kitsu had made it a goal to read every book in the house... including the cookbook. And so he knew a few recipes by heart. But of course, it was only theory. It's always theory, he snorted. I read so much but I haven't really done anything at all.

Dreamless sleep was always the best kind, especially since the alternative would have been horrid nightmares. Zweix was fortunate enough to have partaken of the former during the rest of her night, and she only slightly cringed as light spread across her form, sprawled out under the covers. For a moment, she remained oblivious in the amnesia of newly born consciousness, but as she tried to rise and was met with the resistance of pain biting into her leg, everything from last night seeped back to her, causing her to frown a bit as she slowly hobbled to the ground, shaky but on her feet.
"Morning, Kyo~" Zweix sleepily responded, wiping her good eye as she began to move towards the kitchen, where she assumed the older kitsu would try to make breakfast. Her stomach rumbled, and she decided that breakfast actually sounded really good about then. "Just what are you gonna try from the cookbook?" She was familiar enough with her brother's ways to understand what he was doing, and her intuition told her of his apprehension of trying something new.

Xelon managed to find his way to the edge of the forest, stumbling out like someone who had just solved a lifesized maze. His clothes were torn and his fur was dirty. Bits of grass and leaves were stuck to it, but the Kitsu didn't seem to notice. His mind was solely on his family; he hoped that Zweix had made it home and that Kyo had tended to her.
And where was Derix? Xelon hoped his son hadn't returned to the house yet. The last thing he needed was someone to add fuel to the flame. Moving into the field of grass, he shielded his eyes and scanned the area. "It should just be over that hill..." he muttered, setting off at a normal pace. A part of him wanted to dash towards the house and make sure his family was alright, but another part was reluctant to face them. He wasn't sure how they would react to his presence. It might have been better if he had just headed off somewhere else.
But the nagging feeling of seeing his family would not subside, and so he set his sights on his house and trekked forward.
Kyo stuck his tongue out in concentration as he flipped through the cookbook. "I don't know... these things aren't really suited for breakfast." He paused briefly on a page before continuing on. "And I don't feel like baking something... that'd take too long." With a snap, the Kitsu shut the book and placed it back on the counter, turning to look at his sister.
She seemed better this morning, he noted. Her leg was still intact and the bandages were in place. He moved over to poke his head in a cabinet. "You don't mind toast, do you?" he asked, pulling out a loaf of bread. In truth, he hadn't even touched the toaster before, although he knew exactly how it worked. "I just hope I don't set the kitchen on fire," he sighed.

"Toast is fine," Zweix responded, looking around the kitchen. Kyo could practically fry a shoe and she'd eat it, her stomach grumbling as it was. She watched him with a mild interest for a moment, then couldn't help but smile at the final comment. "Want me to go get a bucket of water, just in case?"

"I'd rather you not. Don't want to strain that leg of yours any more than necessary," he replied. "You'll just have to pray to the higher beings that I can operate a toaster." The adolescent smiled as he sliced the bread carefully, taking care not to knick his paws.
With their father gone, he had already done two things that he probably would never do in his life. Whether it was good or bad, he didn't know. But it was reality, and he would have to live with it. The Kitsu was even talking a lot more than he normally did. All the talking was usually taken care of by Derix, whose presence only caused Kyo to avoid any contact at all and shut himself in the library. With his brother away, he found himself able to speak freely, and he reveled in this newfound freedom.
Kyo also highly doubted that he would ever get a place of his own, finding himself quite content to live his life in his father's house. The outdoors was simply not for him. He only hoped that Derix would get bored of the place soon and live somewhere else.
Humming a random tune, he placed two pieces of toast into the slots and, after making sure everything was proper, tentatively pressed down on the sidehandle. His tails swished in delight as the toaster did as it was supposed to.

Zweix watched with curiosity as Kyo started the makings of a breakfast, then quickly lost interest, standing for a moment in awkward silence as she looked around. "...I'm going to go get a book and sit down. I'll be in the living room," she finally declared, hobbling from the kitchen to let the older kit figure out the intricacies of cooking.
Granted, it was much harder to reach any books with a bad leg and an aching side, but despite her half-bandaged self she managed to snag a thick book between her teeth and hobble back into the living room, clambering up onto her perch on the couch and flipping open the cover, peering at the table of contents. When she found what she was looking for, her face set in a grim frown, and she turned about a third of the way in, starting to read quietly to herself. She would have to ask what some of the technical names meant later, but there was one word she could pick out very well.
Lycanthropy. The curse of a werewolf.
