I followed the example of Joe cabin's smile
so, we have Onsen and Sento....
Hot Springs (Onsen) and Public Baths (Sento)

Sento are Japanese public baths. While in the past some sento were coed now they are segregated. When you first enter, remove your shoes. Then go into the men'sor women's dressing room. There, you will undress and wash yourself. After you are done washing you will soak in the bath. Never get soap into the bath. Please read the Wikipedia's article on Sento found here. By clicking on the picture you can visit the webpage of a sento in Kyoto.

Hot springs called "onsen" are very common in Japan. Because Japan is a volcanic area, hot springs occur naturally all over the country. It is estimated that there are over twenty thousand hot springs throughout Japan. At the onsen, you will clean yourself in the shower area and then soak in the hot spring. Clothes and soap are not allowed in the onsen. The onsen vary in size and location. Some health spas have onsite onsen while other onsen are naturally occurring large outdoor pools. It is a rare treat at an outdoor onsen in the mountains that a monkey will come and visit and soak for a while. Onsen and Sento have several differences. The water in an onsen must have come from a volcanic spring. Sento have no requirement where the water came from and are used only for bathing.
Onsen are thought to have healing properties. They will often have several different pools with different treatments in each. Each different pool would be used for a different type of problem. For example, springs with carbon in them are said to be good for heart disease and blood circulation while those with gypsum are said to help physical wounds heal. Many onsen will also feature spa like luxuries such as a cook, sauna, masseuse, etc. Here is a link to the Nozawa Onsen located in just south of Nagano. Nozawa features 13 different onsen, a ski resort, golf course, swimming pool, saunas, massage, and a training center.
