Bars like this were the best kind.
Sure, wasn't high class or anything. But Veli wouldn't have it any other way. Those bastards were full of themselves. These guys were more often drunk than not, and half the time they didn't even act like they heard any music being played.
That part kinda miffed him. But, hey. At least they were fun to watch after he was done singing.
Signing was what he did. Didn't play any instrument, just sang the lyrics to songs written almost before he was out of adolescence. He was good, but then again, it didn't matter when your audience was drunk and old and crotchety. He didn't hear any complaints, though.
Currently, he sat at the bar, peeling off the label on his bottle and waiting for a pool table to open up.
It was about then that Noah entered. He took the stool a few down from Veli an ordered his usual brand of beer. He sat, breathing heavily, and sipped.
Huh! It seemed that he had run here.
Noticing the newcomer, Veli turned his head slightly, watching him from the corner of his eye. He had pretty good side vision.
. . . Nice. It took something fine in a man to make his heartbeat to pick up like that.
Turning his attentions back to the pool table, Veli finished removing his label, idly tipping back what was left in the bottle.
Now... What would be the best way to introduce yourself...
Carefully, of course, as Noah had just been approached by a lithe young thing. She giggled and sat beside him, ordering some kind of hideous fruity thing. Not his kind of woman, that was for sure.
"I'm Ginaaa!"
"Noah."
"How CUUUUTE!"
"Mom thought so."
Ew. Girlthing, and it was drinking a girly drink. Veli wrinkled his nose and- Aha, table open!
"Hey!" He called, leaning towards Noah. "You play pool? I need someone to play against."
At first, Noah looked confused. Why would someone he'd never seen in his entire goddamn life be asking him to play pool?
...and then he realized that anything was better than "Giiinaaaaa" with the broken nose.
"Sure, kid," he nodded, taking his beer with him. Hope ya don't mind bein' beaten." He grinned, heading for the cues with Gina close behind.
"Psh, don't be so full of yourself, old man." Veli said, grinning. He picked up a cue and then checked the balls over, making sure that they were set up right.
"Wanna break?"
Noah said nothing, but smiled and motioned for the table. No, he'd prefer to not. Now, people were beginning to crowd around to watch.
Humming slightly, Veli leaned over the table, eying the balls for a moment. Somewhat like a cat getting ready to pounce, he wiggled slightly. He shot the ball, breaking the rest, and stood, cue in hand.
"Stripes." He said, looking over the break.
"Mmhm," Noah said vaguely, crouching to get at eye-level with the table. He stood and made the next move..and so the game had begun!
And, like he'd said, Veli was good at pool. Very good. Hell, he didn't do much else anymore...
He sunk another shot, moving in the second to last ball. While he played he looked ever so serious, occasionally trying to chat, but mostly just watching the game and the man from the corner of his eyes.
Noah really didn't seem to care. He leaned on his cue, one ankle crossed over the other, smiling slightly. This game was the least of his worries.
"Looks like you're gettin' your a** whupped!" a very, very drunk Gina laughed, stumbling into her new-found date.
"And it looks like you shouldn't have had those last few fruity things." Veli laughed, sinking the last ball. "Besides, he's probably got himself a life. I spend too much time playin' pool."

"Just a full-time job, Rocker Boy," Noah snorted and purposefully knocked a ball in front of the 8-ball. Huh! Apparently he'd seen Veli perform before...
"Now go ahead and kick an old man's a**."
"Yeah, well, I got singing and pool. Good life." Veli snorted, moving slightly, ricocheting the white ball off of the side of the table and knocking the eight ball neatly into the corner pocket.
"Done and done. You're not that old, though."
"You didn't call it, but I'll let you slide," Noah snorted and shook his head, sipping at his second beer.
"Good game," he said, offering his hand.
Veli smiled, shaking his hand. Mmm, warm human.
"Thanks for joining me." He said, grinning. "Let me buy you another drink when you get done with that one."
"Pity, I see," Noah said, finishing the shake and not seeming to notice Veli's lack of body heat, "Not that I'm complaining."
He began back toward the bar and looked over his shoulder.
"What's your name?" he asked as he mounted a stool, Gina following.
Veli returned to the bar as well. "Veli." He said, ordering himself another beer. The man drank like a fish, he did.
"Nice to meet you," Noah nodded and took a final swig. He wiggled his now-empty beer bottle in front of Veli's face, chuckling slightly to himself.
"The pleasure's mine." Veli nodding, ordering Noah another drink on his tab.
Oh, he wished the pleasure was all his.
"Thanks," Noah said to the barkeep as he was handed a beer, and then he turned to Veli and gave a more sincere "thanks".
"You're real good at pool," he commented casually.
At the thanks, Veli grinned, raising his bottle in a sort of salute.
"Like I said. When I'm not up on stage I'm either at the bar or on the tables. I'm not too complicated."
Noah half-smiled and nodded. Made sense.
"I can't usually find someone--" He stopped, Gina having fallen onto his right arm and begun giggling.
"...sober enough to play," he chuckled.
Veli snickered as well, shaking his head.
"Uh huh. Sober is indeed a factor. I'm never drunk." It was a fact. He'd never been able to find any sort of liquor that would make him drunk.
"It takes a lot to get me there..." Noah nodded and tried to right Gina. She just flopped right back. The poor man mumbled something like 'always stuck with these' into his beer.
Eyes traveling over to the young woman, Veli snorted. "You want help getting that off, or are you attached to it?"
"I'm not sure..." Noah reasoned, looking down to Gina, "I mean, it may be my...free ticket, yenno what I mean."

At this point, Veli does very un PG-13 things and ends up in Noah's bed. Tee hee, buttsecks.
The next morning was unbearably warm, and Noah had apparently taken the majority of the blankets off the bed he'd left Veli in. The poor man was already a good ways into the day's work.
Mmmm, Warm. Veli had snuggled into the spot that Noah had left, enjoying his scent. After a while he woke up, dragging his blankets up over his head as he sat up.
No Noah.
Oh, well. Was to be expected. Slowly, still remembering how weak-legged he'd been the night before, Veli stood. Good, most of the weakness was gone. He made the bed slowly, still feeling deliciously stiff and sore. Mmm, good night.
Now, to find his clothes...
Hm! There appeared to be something taped to the door...
After dressing carefully, Veli took the thing and looked it over, carefully opening the envelope.
Hrm.
Inside was a sheet of paper, folded in thirds, and what looked like a laminated ID on a lanyard.
Frowning, Veli examined the card-thing as he unfolded the paper with the other hand. Curious!
All the ID said was "VISITOR'S PASS" with some strange numbers, a barcode, and an emblem for some kind of hotel.
The paper read:
left for work at 5, back by 3 greenway hotel boiler room
Oh, and Veli was confused. Very, very confused. He slipped on his shoes, looking at the note. This was interesting. It wasn't a booty call. And he didn't know how to deal with that.
After a moment of thought, he walked over and scribbled his phone number down on a piece of paper, adding his name underneath and putting it on the fridge. He hopped from foot to foot for a moment before tucking pass and note both into his pocket and walking out.
Okay... The hotel was where again?
Only about 3 blocks away!
At the door, a woman checked his visitor's pass with a kind of pricing gun thing, and nobody else so much as cared to look his way. What a posh hotel!
Not that Veli took any notice. He wasn't one to notice poshness.
After a bit of searching, he found the boiler room. He nibbled on his lower lip and checked out the little card slider, using his little pass-thing on it. Aha! That worked!
He slid in, closing the door behind him quietly. Ah, now he was kind of worrying!
There was a gigantic boiler obscuring any view of the lower level, but a set of semi-rusted stairs led down to the left. There was definitely someone down there...or something. There was a continued knocking and the sound of falling metal.
Veli moved down the stairs quietly, fiddling with the bottom of his shirt. He was nervous. Why was he nervous?
". . . Noah?"
The banging didn't stop, but another noise rose above the din.
"Yeah!"
Yaaay, Noah!
"S'Veli!" He called back, heading for the source of the noise. Huh! Hearing his voice made a funny feeling pop up in him...
There was Noah, bent over a new patch of cement flooring. He put the spade down and stood.
Oh my!
He wore stained and worn coveralls, but they hung down around his waist rather than the proper way, the top flopping down over his legs. He was drenched in sweat and wearing a blue bandanna around his forehead. Ah, how it brought out his eyes!
"I thought you wer'n't' gonna show."

Veli stared for a moment, that wonderfully warm feeling rising up in him again. Oh, God.
". . . Sorry, I just woke up." He said, blinking and looking off to one side. Was that a blush on his cheeks?
Noah didn't seem to notice.
"Naw, s'alright. I've been keepin' busy." He nodded toward a wall that seemed to have been almost entirely redone.
He paused, and then:
"Nice to see ya."
Why were they both so nervous?
". . . Yeah. I... Uh..."
This was different. This wasn't a booty call. Or it was the weirdest one he'd ever been called on. Nibbling his lower lip again, Veli looked at him. This was strange. Not sex. It was... Dangerous.
But damned if that man didn't make him want it bad.
"Thanks for telling me to come."
Noah smiled and nodded, returning to his cement.
"So how would you feel about exclusivity?"
"Huh?" Veli blinked at him. Um. Please to not be confusing the man, Noah.
"I mean I call you when I need you," Noah explained, slathering more cement on the floor and spreading it flat, "you call me when you need me, we don't go to other people."
He refused to look Veli in the eye.
Okay. The first part he understood. Like a booty call. He was fine with that. He had a lot of people's numbers for that.
It was the second part that confused him somewhat. Not going to other people...?
"So... Friends with benefits, but just with me and you?"
"Yeah," Noah chuckled, "I don't wanna share somethin' so amazing."
Jeanemon 01-19-2008 10:57 PM And was that an illusion, or were the tips of Veli's ears turning red?
"Mmm, I don't want to share you, either." He said, remembering the night before. Noah had ruined him for others, anyway. "And... Should I come over tonight?"
Noah shrugged.
"If you want to. You can even stay, if you wish."
Veli just looked at him, like he was some sort of odd creature. Huh!
"Okay..." He still looked confused. Poor Baby.
Noah chuckled.
"I mean for the rest of today."
Veli tried his best to cover up his confusion. Coming over in the daytime was something he hadn't expected.
"Oh. Okay." He thought about it for a few moments. "So, what'll we do?"
Noah shrugged.
"I'm still stuck here for another coupla' hours. That should be enough time for you to figure out what you wanna do. Just keep my salary in mind."
Veli nodded.
"All right. I'll meet you back at your place at three thirty, then? Or do you want to meet somewhere public?"

Noah turned back to him and smiled.
"Sounds good. You can hang out there 'til then. I'll try t'finish quicker. I don't care who sees me with you."
"I need to go home and change." And take a proper shower, but, hey. "But if you get done early, I left my number on your fridge. Just give me a call and I'll be over as soon as I can walk."
Oh, reeeeally?
"Alright. It's a deal. Have your mind made up by then."
Noah winked and went back to work.
The wink made something squishy happen inside. Veli had nodded and left, returning home and giving himself a good bath. He'd mulled around for a bit, thinking, before walking back to Noah's home, looking nervous.
Huh. This boy could do anything when it came to sex. But put him in a normal relationship and he was lost.
Seeing that his truck was home, Veli walked up and knocked on the door.
Ah, well. That explained why he wasn't answering his phone. Noah hung up and went for the door, opening it and smiling.
"Welcome back."
Veli smiled at him, running a hand through his hair. The green streaks somehow looked odder in the daytime.
"Thanks for welcoming me." He said, nodding. "Can I come in?"
"Mmhm," Noah nodded, stepping aside.
"Have you decided where you want to go?"
Veli shrugged, looking at the ground after a moment. "I dunno. Like, a movie, maybe?"
"Sounds good," Noah nodded, pulling his wallet and keys from a small table, "So I invited you inside...why?"
As Veli started out for Noah's house, he couldn't believe how well the past few weeks had went. He was amazingly comfortable in the man's presence, and Noah certainly knew how to treat him.
The slight fluttering in his chest bothered him from time to time when he looked at Noah, but the usual empty-after-sex feeling had left, which was a good thing.
Things were nice. Really incredibly nice. Veli grinned to himself and started across the street. He couldn't remember when things had been this nice bef-
Something hit him. Something hit him hard. All the air went out of his body as things inside of him started to snap. He could hear, in a strangely slow fashion, screeching tires. He hit metal, hot, then cool glass, and then there was more pain as he fell back onto concrete.
Silence.
And then the car drove away.
Groaning, tears in his eyes, Veli forced himself to ignore the pain. There was something up with one leg, but he wasn't too far from Noah's. He could make it, no problem.
Oh God. It hurt. Veli gave a little sob, forcing himself to move the rest of the way. Water. He needed water.
Finally, not a moment too soon, Veli reached Noah's. He collapsed against the door, knocking as best he could.
Noah opened it, expecting to see the usual healthy, happy Veli. When he saw the pitiful heap on his doorstep, he experienced just a little bit of a brainsnap.
At first he didn't know what to do. It wasn't every day you found a bleeding man in front of your door. His second reaction, though, was the pick the poor man up.
"Godhehityoudidn'the."
Veli cried out, and when he moved tehre was a very audible grinding noise. Lots of things broken. There was blood coming from his nose and mouth.
Veli was not in a good way.
"Hurts. S'cold." He managed, trying to look at him. s**t. Vision was starting to go. He was dying. "Need water. T'be innit."
Noah held Veli to him and went back inside, closing the door with his foot. When people were very obviously dying, you learned to not question it.
"Like...a bath tub?" He'd drawn one for himself earlier, and he'd ever used it. It was probably a bit cold, but he said water, not warm water.
And it was then that Noah realized, hey, Veli was dying. He was losing him before he even had him. His eyes filled, but he disallowed him the right to cry.
More blood. More tears. "Water." He repeated again, hands spasming against Noah. He looked up at him, with eyes that didn't see, wanting to warn him somehow.
"Differen't. I'm odd. Don't... Nnnn... Still me-"
Noah's brow furrowed and a single tear fell, simply from the fluid overflowing. That made no sense. Bath tub water was water, was there a different kind of water? What?
Giving a little sniff, Noah moved to the bathroom, knelt, and placed Veli in the water. Oh, God, it was turning pink.

At this point, the one leg wasn't responding at all. It was hard to move. He could feel himself getting wet, but it wasn't enough just yet. The change was starting, but it was slow.
Groaning, Veli started to work out of his clothing. Sure, he could change in it, but it hurt more, and expanded more energy, and he couldn't quite spare any energy right now.
Noah lunged forward, clicking his tongue.
"Let me," he said, voice unusually quiet and unstable for him. He removed Veli's shoes and socks first, followed by his pants and then his shirt. Oh, God.
He wrapped an arm around the young man, resting his chin on the side of the tub.
Now he let himself cry, but only visibly. He had to stay at least moderately strong, if only for Veli.
Veli gave a little mumble, more Not-English. His hands were caring. Such an odd thought. He waited, and felt the familiar feeling start in his feet. Sighing, his head lolling back, he braced himself.
If Noah was looking, he might have noticed that the change happened first in the feet. His toes were already webbed together slightly, but they seemed to... Fuse, now that they were exposed to the water. His legs followed suit, the skin fusing them together. The color changed, and he seemed to be developing... Scales? And fins on his feet?
While the lower body changed, the upper did as well. The coloring on his chest grew, the scale pattern becoming more defined. Five fingers fused together into three, sprouting claws, and pops came from his chest as bones reset. The bleeding seemed to be slowing as well.
His head was last to change. The nose shrunk inwards while the eyes grew, as did the teeth, poking out of his mouth jaggedly. His ears changed to somewhat finny things, and a strange dangly thing grew from his forehead.
Veli gave a little inarticulate moan, hands flexing, his tail flopping slightly.
Well. What in the world was he?!
Yes, Noah noticed. After all, how could one not? He did, however, not move. His arm stayed where it was, but the other hand rose to caress Veli's cheek. So that's what he'd meant by 'different'.
Oh well. Terrifyingly hideous or not, it was his Veli.
...oh, God. "His"...
Veli kept making strange almost words, whispery and fluid sounding. His head moved back and forth slightly. One louder moan, a hand moving to his chest. And then his eyes opened. They were large and liquid, all iris and pupil, no white.
Looking first down at his body, noting color changes in the scales (He wasn't out of the woods yet in the healing business). Then, with obvious fear, he looked to Noah.
"Sorry." His voice was different. More whisper, somewhat liquid, with a musical undertone. "I... I'm..."
"Half-fish," Noah chuckled, still petting and loving, "I noticed." He sighed with something like relief then and grinned.
"Also not-dead."
"Knew me changing would fuse the bones. I still got internal issues, but the water helps with healing." It was cold, though. But, hey. Beggars couldn't be choosers.
"I'm... Heh. A merman. Know it sounds silly, but I am." Veli watched him, his little not nose wiggling slightly. And, since he was being touched, he carefully touched back, softly, in case Noah didn't want it. But, God, he was warm. Lovely.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell." His voice was little, and he was scared. God, he was scared. "You deserved to know... I just don't have a good track record with good things happening after I tell people."
Two months in a tank meant for lizards and nearly being dissected alive wasn't fun times, after all.
"Huh," Noah said, arching a brow and tilting his head slightly, "Thirty seconds ago, I didn't believe in mermai--men." He sighed, caressed Veli's hair a final time, and leaned in to kiss his cheekbone-that-wasn't.
"People suck. I promise I'm not like them. I don't give a damn what you are. Only who."
He moved his next kiss to the shoulder and sighed again.
"I really thought you were dying on me."
To ignore the sudden wrenching of his heart, he pulled the plug in the tub and began to run a heavy rush of warm water.
Giving a series of shudders, at both the kisses and the temperature change, Veli looked at him.
"Explains why I'm so cold sometimes, huh?" He asked, giving a little laugh, tail moving to splash some of the warmer water up on him. Mmmm, warm.
He didn't know what to say to the last part. 'If I'd been hit a block farther from you, I would've been?' He was damn lucky that Noah had the bath pre-drawn, or else he would have been in a world of hurt. God, that had been close.
"Sorry. I gotta stay in here for a little while. Can't change back 'till I'm safe and healed. Don't trust myself to move yet. Bones are in the right spot, but there's too much bruising and tearing. Sorry." And, oddly enough, he felt bad that he wouldn't be able to give Noah their usual nightly coupling. "And... Um... Could.. I have a little salt in the water?"
"I assume you mean sea salt," Noah smiled and stood, going to the fish tank in the living room and searching for the bag of salt. Ah! There.
...hey, fish. There would be no dirty looks.
He returned to the tub and began to add the salt slowly.
"Just tell me when to stop."
Veli sighed, long and happy, his eyes closing. The smell reminded him of home.
"Tha's good." He murmured, one hand moving to rest on Noah's wrist. "Mmmm..."
Noah simply put the bag down and knelt beside the tub, wrapping his arm around Veli again. He caressed the man's jaw and grinned.
"You're welcome, then."
Eyes flicking open again, Veli looked at him for a moment. He leaned against him, eyes closing again.
That funny feeling was back, and it was harder now. It was warm, but so different.
"Thanks. You're amazing." He said, softly touching him with the back of one hand.
Noah pulled back slightly and kissed the back of Veli's hand.
"Nah, just a simpleton," he chuckled.
The corners of his mouth pricked up in a smile, and there was something about him that said that if he'd been human, he would have been blushing.
When Veli finally spoke, his voice was soft.
"I've been playing at being human for ten, maybe fifteen years now. I've told one Human what I am. When I did, I spent two months in a tank fit for a lizard and, if my sister hadn't stepped in, I would've been dissected. Trust me when I say you're amazing.

Noah kissed the man...thing's neck again.
"I'll never let that happen again," he smiled, one hand moving down Veli's chest, down his tail. Huh! Intriguing.
The tail curled up, fins at the end tickling at Noah's hand. He sighed at the touching, eyes closed, head lolling to one side. Mmm, warm water and touchies.
"You're taking this well." He said softly, voice having a slightly far away tone to it. "I never thought anyone would."
Noah shrugged.
"Under other circumstances, I may have reacted a little...more negatively," he said honestly, "and, I mean, it's pretty surprising. A liiiittle scary. A lot confusing...but, hey. I've known you long enough."
Murmuring under his breath, Veli turned his head to look at him. He looked relaxed. Gently, he brushed Noah's cheek with his knuckles.
"I bet it is. Scary, that is. I'm not... The standard for merfolk. I'm bad, expecially by their standards." But his appearance was the main reason that he was there.
Noah shrugged.
"Eh, you're still as beautiful as ever," he smiled and touched one of Veli's teeth.
"I don't think we'll ever be having relations with those, though."
"Oh, no." Veli assured him, still touching him with the back of one hand. "They're very sharp. So are the claws. I'd never expect you to want to come near me when I'm like this."
"I'm near you right now, aren't I?" Noah chuckled and made a little shooing motion.
"Move over."
Veli looked at him, surprise on his fishy face. He moved over carefully, wincing. Ouchies.
"'Kay." he looked confused.
Noah stripped down to his skivvies quickly, and then removed those, and then he wriggled into the tub beside Veli, opening his arms for him. Awww...
Looking confused, Veli slowly moved into his arms. After a moment of awkwardness, he snugged against him, careful of any scales or fins or other sharp bits that might hurt him.
"Mmmm..." He sighed, giving him an awkward little nuzzle. "S'nice. Thanks."
"I've been thinking..." Noah mused, "We're...pretty...pretty close anyway...and I mean, we're exclusive. So maybe we should get to know each other on a...more personal, less intimate level?"
He chucked slightly and looked Veli over.
"I mean, we clearly haven't been completely honest with each other..."
Veli somehow managed to look shamefaced. "I'm sorry." He said softly, averting his eyes. "I didn't mean to trick you, or to lie to you for so long."
He really hadn't. The fact that the relationship had lasted past that first night still amazed him.
"I'll tell you anything you want to know."
Noah shrugged.
"I'm pretty sure I know all I need to know right now." He snorgled Veli gently, enjoying the feel of skin-on-skin without any need for sexual pleasure.
Mmmmm, Warm. Veli sighed, enjoying his scent.
". . . What's growing up human like?" He asked after a moment. "What do you do?"
Noah shrugged.
"I didn't exactly have a model family, but I...yenno, played with other kids. Bugged my parents for toys. Went to church every Sunday. It's a lot of pushing your parents' buttons and going to school...and then you're suddenly an adult."

"Human things are hard." Veli said, exploring one of Noah's arms carefully. "So much to learn, in such a short time... You're amazing."
Noah just chuckled and flexed said arm.
"And I could say the same about you."
"Not really. Merfolk grow fast. We learn quick, perhaps a year or three of childhood." Veli traced over the muscle, his eyes still closed. Hmmmm~
". . . You are very kind, Noah. I've never met anyone like you."
"Thank you," Noah smiled, "You're quite unique yourself."
"I am." Veli sighed, resting his head against Noah's chest.
". . . I'm sorry. I'm just... Really tired." He sighed, rubbing his cheek against warm skin.
"That's what I'm here for," Noah smiled and spoke softly, "To be your pillow."
Veli was fighting to stay conscious. A dream. This had to be some sort of a weird dream. Too much kindness. He didn't want it to end.
He made a little burbling sound, his eyes finally closing, and his arm went limp, dropping across Noah's chest. And the poor fishman was out. Comfy Noah pillow.
Noah just sighed and smiled softly, watching Veli as he slept. Frightening, sure...but amazingly beautiful.
Funny how things work out sometimes.
Veli slept for a long time. The discoloration on his stomach and tail scales faded until they were a matching color to the rest. His eyes slowly flittered open.
He went over a mental checklist of what had happened the night before, something inside of him freezing. Oh, God. Noah. He slowly looked up at the man's face.
Noah knew.
Noah just looked to him and smiled, petting his hair once.
"Good morning."
Still staring, Veli slowly formed the words.
"Gh... Good morning." His little not nose wiggled, watching him. Oh, God. He knew, he knew, he knew-!
Noah, still smiling, kissed Veli between the nostrils.
And as silly as it sounded, Veli's heart melted at that simple affection. He carefully reached up and stroked the back of one hand down his cheek.
"Thanks for taking care of me."
More sex, and Noah wonders if it's bestiality.
Noah was happy today. Really, excessively, school-girl-ish happy. It may be for the visit Veli had paid him the night before, or perhaps not. Regardless, he was very certain he had never felt better.
Luckily, he didn't see the rope snap, or the coworker slip. That may have killed his mood. He did, however, hear the yelp and see the sheet of metal falling.
Past that, there was nothing.
The morning went well for Veli as well. He hummed, visiting Noah's fish and basically puttering about until it was time for Noah to come home.
Yenno, he might as well move some stuff over. He spent most of his time at Noah's, anyway. Would be smart to have some clean clothes over here...

And two went by. So did two-thirty and three. Still, there was no sign of Noah.
Something was wrong.
Gnawing at his lower lip, Veli locked up and headed over to the worksite. Something was wrong. He could feel it. He hadn't felt the wrong happen, but something had happened.
Okay. He'd find a foreman and ask if Noah had left already. It shouldn't be hard.
Except the foreman was outside the school, talking to a police officer. Oh no, that wasn't good...
Oh God. Police.
Veli gnawed at his lower lip. What to do? Wait? Go looking for Noah by himself?
Wait. Waiting was smart. Waiting wouldn't make hiim look insane. Who was he? Noah's friend? They'd... Had plans. yes. That sounded perfectly reasonable and not at all reputation smearing for Noah.
He moved from foot to foot, watching the officer and the foreman. Ohgod. Noah.
The policeman thanked he foreman after a few more minutes and drive away, leaving the poor distraught man to his own devices. There was also a weasely looking, fidgety little man by the building itself. The culprit!
Now that the officer was gone, Veli moved to the foreman.
"Excuse me..." He said politely, though everything in him was screaming to grab the man and shake him until he told him where Noah was.
"Hm?" the foreman asked, looking to Veli. His eyes were uneasy, worried. Poor guy.
"Hi. I'm a friend of Noah's. I tried calling him but he didn't answer." Note to self: Try calling before lying. "Has something happened?"
The foreman blinked.
"Uh...yeah, yeah he...accident on the job. They took him to the hospital."
His nose twitched. Veli was honestly torn between wanting to scream and run, and wanting to find someone and rip them.
"Which one." There was a oddly flat tone to his voice, nose still twitching. Oh noes, Veli was feeling the strange things inside of himself again!
"I have no idea," the foreman said, wringing his hand together, "They went that way." He took a moment to point down the street, and then his hands returned to their previous position.
"Thank you." Veli sounded distracted and turned, going in the direction indicated.
All right... It couldn't be that hard to find a hospital in this direction. He went to the first one he could think of as fast as he could.
Oh, god. Hospital. Hospital, full of doctors and surgeries and knives and-
Noah. Just think of Noah. He was more important than any silly little fears.
Veli walked up to the little desk thing, leaning against it, his face pale. "Hi...." He said, not even trying to be his normal, charming self. "Friend of mine got hurt, but I don't know which hospital he got brought to. His name's Noah James, is there any way you can look up and see if he got brought in?"
"Of course," the woman said, beginning to flip a few pages back in her large in-patient book.
"Yes, he was brought in about a half hour ago. Would you like to see him?"
"Yes, please." That meant he wasn't dead, right? That meant his Noah was fine. Hurt, but fine.
... His. His Noah. He'd be scared at that alone if he wasn't already terrified that Noah was hurt.
The woman said something over the loudspeaker and a smiling nurse arrived.
"I'm afraid it's not quite the best time, but I can still take you to him if you'd like," she nodded.

"Please." Veli said again, looking worried. Oh God, please let him be okay...
"Do you know what happened? The foreman said something about an accident, but I didn't stick around for details."
"Far as we could gather, a piece of sheet metal broke from a tether," the nurse explained, "It must've hit him on the way down."
Veli made a little noise, gnawing at his lower lip. Oh God, his poor Noah!
"Thanks for telling me." Oh God, what if his brain was hurt? What if he didn't wake up? Oh, Noah-!
Except when they got to the room, there was Noah, grimacing and sitting up as a woman in a long white coat stitched a gash in his forehead back together. His face was terribly bruised, but he didn't seem any worse for the wear.
"He was only unconscious for ten minutes."
Noah waved.
Veli tried very hard to control the look of horror that came across his face being in the same room as a doctor. Oh God, Oh God-!
"Hey, Noah." He said, voice unsteady, choosing to focus on him instead with a little return wave.
The doctor paid Veli absolutely no mind. He finished the stitches, tied and cut the string, disinfected the wound again, and left the room.
"Looks worse than it feels," Noah said, managing a small smile, "At last 'til the Novocaine wears off."
Thank God, the horrible white coated abomination left! Veli moved to his bedside, looking up at the injury with large eyes.
"Oh, Noah..." What to say? He didn't have a lot of history with dealing with injured people, after all.
"I'm... I'm so glad you're all right."
Weak.
Noah chuckled and shifted, letting his head fall back onto the stiff pillow.
"Thanks."
Jeanemon 01-21-2008 08:33 PM Veli stood, going to the door and closing it. He looked very worried for some reason.
He returned to the bed, smoothing out the blankets. He sat beside him, wrapping one arm over his chest gently. Veli kissed his chest a few times, resting his cheek against him.
"I knew something was wrong. I could feel it."
Noah arched a brow, but didn't look down. His neck hurt.
"Whaddya mean? Just a feeling or some kinda psychic mumbo-jumbo?"
"A feeling, for now. I didn't feel it happen, which would be more the mumbo-jumbo..."
Veli moved up, gently stroking his cheek and leaning in to give his forehead a hardly felt kiss.
"But you're fine. You're not going to leave me."
Noah gave a little groan. Even that hurt.
"Naw, not 'til you get tired of me. Can't go to work for a month or so, though. Speaking of, mind the broken ankle."
"I'll take care of you." Veli promised quickly. "I'll do anything you need."
"Alright," Noah said, giving a little hiss of pain as he wrapped an arm around Veli.
"Then I want you to move in for a month or two. I think you'd make an amazing nurse." He snorted.
"Of course." Veli nodded. "I'll take care of you and the fish and clean and cook and anything you need. I'll take care of you."

"Woahwoahwoah," Noah laughed, "You don't need to do all that. I just want someone to keep me company while I'm not workin'. Well, for the first few days, maybe..."
After all, even looking around was painful.
"On the bright side, I got workman's comp."
"With you being hurt, I don't wanna let you get up and hurt yourself more." Veli explained, stroking his cheek. "I'll do anything to keep you nice and stable until you heal. Okay?"
"Actually," Noah explained, "I'm supposed to be on my way home right now. Superficial wounds and whatnot. They tried to feed me chicken."
"I'll carry you." Veli grumbled, sitting up. He looked down at Noah and smiled. Even if he didn't realize, and even if he didn't say, there was, for sure, a look of love in those eyes.
Noah laughed hard and grabbed his crutches, standing on his left foot.
"For one, I don't think you could. For two, no need."
Veli grinned. "I can do a lot of things that you wouldn't think I could." He said. After a moment, his face fell, and he petted Noah's arm.
"I'll do anything for you, Noah."
"Uh...that's rather...kind of you. Thanks," Noah said, giving a nurse a little wave.
"I assume you didn't drive here."
"I can't drive." He forgot how to drive sometimes. You better believe the man didn't know how to drive.
"I'll call us a cab or something."
"I don' have any money, do you?" Noah asked, "I mean, I could always walk."
"I would piggyback you before I'd let you walk." Veli said, going to a pay phone. "And I think I can cover a cab ride, Noah."
"Alright," Noah nodded, leaning on his crutches and squinting against the sun, "I'll pay ya back when we get to my truck."
"Don't you dare." Veli snorted. "I said I can get a cab ride. You drive me around everywhere anyway." He made the call, then moved beside Noah.
"So... Beside the gash and the bad ankle, anything else hurt?"
"Uh...the bruises hurt somethin' fierce," Noah sighed, "Got a huge headache. Not so bad."
"I'll take care of you." He promised again, nodding.
No doubt Veli would be terrified when he realized how deep he was in.
Noah sighed and shifted slightly.
"Alright, alright," he said, "just tell them to hurry the ******** up."

It wasn't too much longer and a cab arrived. Veli handed his wallet over to Noah, muttering: "You pay for it, I'm kinda bad with bills." He smiled, though, holding open the door for him.
Noah smiled and took the wallet, climbing in.
"You pay after the ride."
"Oh." Well, he knew there was some sort of monetary exchange going on. Leave him alone.
Veli told the cabbie where to go, and then leaned back against the seat. "Is construction always so dangerous?"
Noah groaned and tried to stretch out comfortably.
"This is what hardhats are for," he said, turning to Veli, "I, like an idiot, looked up when he yelled for me. I'm lucky I still have a whole head."
Veli made a strange face as, no doubt, he was picturing what Noah would look like without half his head. Didn't seem to be sitting with him too good.
"Oh." He said after a moment, nibbling at his lip. "But you like your job?"
"I love my job," Noah smiled and leaned back, closing his swollen eyes, "I'd never do anything else."
Veli just smiled at him. Ah... As long as he was happy.
"That's good. It's important to like what you do."
"Definitely," Noah nodded and looked out the window as they approached his house. Nnh...had to move again...
Poor Noah. Veli shook his head. He'd get the man into bed and treat him right, he would.
"At least you won't have to go far to get into the house." Veli said, looking up at it.
Noah looked at the meter and paid the cabbie before climbing out and beginning up the steps.
"True," he nodded.
And Veli followed close, ready to give any help if needed be. He rushed forward, opening the door.
"If you need anything, just tell me and I'll get it for you. You need to rest."
"Vel, I'm a grown man," Noah chuckled, using the nickname for the first time ever, "but thanks." He went to the couch and collapsed onto it, finding the clicker and turning on the TV.
"Ah, my new home..."
Veli just smiled.
"Trust me, I know about the 'grown man' bit. Very well, in fact." He laughed. "But you need anything, I'll get it for you. Ice for the head, or a song to get you to sleep."
He hummed, going over to visit with the fish.
The fish immediately swam to greet him, not that he didn't usually. It wanted food. Again.
"Then get your fish-a** over here," Noah snorted, "TV's no fun without you."
Veli made kisses at the fish, giving him some food. He made noises at him for a moment before returning to the couch.
"Artie's lonely. He wants a mate." Veli informed him, stroking Noah's leg.
