Fantasy is filled with magical items, inluding weapons, armor, puzzles, keys, just about anything...

I know there are several topics involving magic already. Bt this topic is more specific. This topic is to discuss magic items - that is normally mundane physical objects that have taken on special properties through magic.

To start the discussion what is everybody's favorite magic item?

Personally I like the idea of magic bows/arrows. They had a form of this in the game Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time for the N64, where you could get arrows that freeze, burn, or have bright light. I am sure more recent Zelda games have something similar as well, but I have not played them.

I have a tendency to use swords that are imbued with certain magical properties. Flame/ice swords? No. The magic I use to imbue swords with always has a specific purpose, and elemental magic isn't one of them.

My favorite magical item would be something along the lines of a magical sword. I remember that one of my favorites was the "Jewel Sword" (Mel must know what I'm talking about, and so does anyone who has played SotN). I liked that sword cuz if you used it normally, nothing happened but, if you used a special button combination, priceless gemstones could fall out when you swung it about. It was a neat way to make quick cash but there were far better one. Well, unless you happened to know where to find huge bags of cash, of course. mrgreen
There were also many kinds of "brand" swords. I'm talking about these babies:

Firebrand
Thunderbrand
Icebrand

Each of them was cool but the most useful one was the Firebrand cuz most enemies had a weakness against fire.

I like other items but I'll leave them for later. 3nodding

Magic items can be mundane or epic in scope. I have a magic item in my mind that I tried to once to make the center of a roleplay. It's called the Csomic Amulet. In some ways it is a little cliche, because it involves elemental magic, and whoever has a part of the amulet that represents a certain element can unlock power over that element. I suppose that sounds liek Captain Planet or something, minus the "Save the Earth" ecotones. At any rate, I tried to expand on the idea, and tried to combine science a little with the classic idea of the four elements, as well as add my own fantasy touch. So here is what it is:

The cosmic amulet is an ancient artifact used by the gods to create the universe. It had nine pieces. Eight pieces are wedge shaped and fit together like pieces of a pie or pizza, except with a round hole in the middle, which is where the ninth piece fits. The eight outer pieces are of two types. There are four pieces that represent the elemental substances, air, fire, earth, and water. Obviusly nothing new there. The other four pieces represent the elemental forces, gravity, electricity, magnetism, and light. This is my own take on things. I know that three of my four forces are actually the same, but I tried to think how forces might fit into a fantasy world where matter is divided into four elements. The amulet is designed so that the wedges fit together in a particualr order. Forces lie between substances. Electricity is between air and fire. Magnetism is between fire and earth. Gravity is between earth and water. Light is between water and air. The ninth center portion of the amulet represnts the element of life, or spirit in the universe. The entire amulet when combined is the most powerful object in existence, giving whoever it posesses not only the powers of all the elemntal substance and forces, but also the power to control, or to destroy and recreate, the universe. The nature of the object lends for obvious conflice between those who would try to gain it for their own selfish purpsoses and those who would try to stop them. I like the fragmented nature of the amulet to, because it allows various levels of conflict, depending on if a certain villain knew about and/or wanted just a portion of the amulet, or the whole thing. I don't know if that would make a good book or movie, but I though it seemed like a decent idea for the plot of a role play. The concept proved to take to long to play out though, and the role play died away - as they always seem to. Anyway, I keep the idea in my mind for when I might have a chance to use it someday. And Kudos to anyone who actually read my long post, you are more patient than I would be. smile

Sounds interesting SK. But where is the Dark element? I mean, if there's light, why not dark? I get how gravity and magnetism can be considered the same but, I don't think electricity fits in there somewhere. You know? What does anyone else think?

I really like magical rings. Like rings of teleportation, protection, rings that are the key to certain things, and rings of magic. Has anyone played the game Eternal Ring before?

I also like magical clothing. Like boots of speed, for example.

magical weapons are kool too, but i dont find them as attractive.

Magical items are very useful in the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It's just the weapons that are a pain in the arse because it costs so much to have someone at the Mages Guild recharge them.

That's an interesting notion though don't you think?
Recharging magical items. It makes me think of how we use electrical items.

Indeed magical items do play quite a role in Oblivion, such as the item the game revolves around: The amulet of Kings(I think thqat's what it's called, havn't looked at it in a long time). It seems that magic items are just a conduit that have a specific purpose, which are then imbued with the power(magic energy) to perfom their task. That would explain why/how they are recharged.

Yeah definitely.

I was thinking how magic items like that which have to be recharged resemble that of items we use that we have to recharge electronically such as: mobile phones, ipods and other mp3 players, the Nintendo DS and PSP, and all manner of other things. They lose charge with use and need to build it back up again in order to work....although in Oblivion you still have a decent weapon when the charge on a magical piece of equipment runs out.

hey mel, really cool comment of how it would have to be recharged in my world of fantasy its this energy thing i have and its hard to explain without really having to explain it in depth but its like my magical items recharge through energy in the air and surroundings i call it my energy theories

The same sort of thing happens in D&D, a lot. Some magic items have a certain number of times its effect can be used, a certain number of charges, before it runs out. Re-charging it tends to be somewhat involved, though, as it usually requires a fairly high-level wizard with a spell of permanent.

I want to make it significantly easier to recharge a magic item in my world, though I haven't quite figured out how to do it yet. It's still not the easiest thing in the world, since I still want it to be a limiting factor. But easier than finding an archmage and getting on his good side.

I have to say that most of the time I find my self thinking 'oh, another flaming sword' rolleyes or suchlike - elemental items seem to be pretty common anywhere you get magic. It needs to have a history to appeal to me, rather than feeling like just the latest item out of the factory!

But there was a tv series called The Lost Room featuring interesting 'magical' items - form and function weren't necessarily linked, i.e. the wrist watch that hard-boils eggs. If you're lucky the website video might work for you (it doesn't seem to want to work for me sad ), or just check some of the descriptions & stuff... did anyone else see it?

Wow! So many posts, so little time.
I just wanna mention that I don't recall many games where magic items need any recharge. There have to be some (games and/or items) but I just can't recall any at the time... sweatdrop

It's more common in pen & paper RPGs rather than video games.
