Osprey's golden eyes searched around the minder's enclave for a possible cohort or two. The always eager and always ready fledgling was bored and irked. She wanted to get as far away from Songbloom as she could, without risking getting hurt or in the way of the busy adults. The Thunderbird's fury had been frightening and she did not want to slow down the process of picking out survivors.

Instead, she decided to take this opportunity to try and find a few playmates.

“Hollyhock, put that down!”

The hassled Minder’s quick snap froze the fledgling in mid-gulp, and he let the small stone he had been halfway considering swallowing fall to the floor of the hollow. It wasn’t his fault that the Thunderbird had stirred up so many interesting things to taste! But at the same time, he felt bad that he had just attracted attention that should have been spent otherwise. Guiltily, he cast around for something and found himself meeting a pair of golden eyes.

“Ossie! Hey, Ossie!”

Puffing himself up, Hollyhock flap-hop-waddled over to the mist fledgling, and he flared excitedly at her. “Whatcha doin’?” he inquired, twisting his head almost sideways and idly regarding a piece of bark that lay discarded near his talons. Leaning down, he picked it up in his beak and tossed it once, but didn’t swallow it—thank Noctus. Then he scooted even closer to Ossie so he could preen the other fledgling’s eartufts.

"Holly! I was jus' lookin' fer you!" Osprey greeted her friend enthusiastically and waddled towards him, meeting about halfway or so. Perhaps she had been looking for him, perhaps she hadn't. She was unsure, herself, but it felt like the appropriate thing to say and she was quite happy she had found him. She gave one of his eartufts a quick preen before opening her beak to speak again.

"I en't been doin' much... Song, she's been buggin' me like crazy lately."

Holly, who hadn’t really had a chance to meet any fledglings other than Ossie, peeped in response, unsure of why Song would be such an annoying Sentinel to be around. But he trusted her judgement and started to preen one of his wings, spreading it wide in the hopes that Ossie would appreciate its recent growth. Holly was going through something of a spurt, and his widening wingspan was a source of great pride. Not that the (mostly) quiet little fledgling would ever admit it.

"Been really bored," he remarked after a moment, looking around to where all the adults were fussing. "Nothin' t'do when ever'one's looking after ever'thing that the Thunderbird messed up."

"Oyah, I know. I 'ear ya." Osprey agreed soundly as she preened a few waywards white feathers on her chest. If Holly were to glance at her, he owuld see her golden eyes looking over the wing he was so discretely showing off.

"Oh! Guess what, tho'? Imma s'posed t'start lessin's soon!" She delivered the news cheerily, but was unsure when they would start, due to the ruckus the storm had caused.

"Really?"

Holly, no matter that he tried, couldn't keep the enthusiasm out of his voice. Fluffing up excitedly, he looked at Ossie, shuffled around, looked at her again, and fluffed. "Who with?" he asked quickly. "I wanna take lessons, but Iunno who I should ask about." He paused, preening his chest feathers quickly, and then looked up at Ossie with a bright smile.

"Maybe we c'n take lessons together?" he asked excitedly. "That'd be fun!"

But before that could happen, there was still the here and the now. "C'mon!" he said suddenly, hopping to the edge of the hollow and perching precariously on its edge. "Let's go out!"

"HnnNnnnNnnneh... Maybe y'c'd try pest'rin Mamma Fli'win'?" She suggested as she waddled after Hollyhock. Mamma Flightwind was one of the older minders and one Osprey was not too terribly fond of, but she took minding quite seriously.

"Oh? Where we goin'?" The mist fledgling asked Holly curiously as she followed.

Understanding the little Mist fledgling had never been a problem for him, in spite of her garbled speech. Holly looked over his shoulder at Ossie. “Maybe. I’ll do that some other time, hmm.”

Then he looked back out in front of him. There was a platform not too far from their current hole, with branches close to it to make it easy enough to access, even for fledglings. Flexing his talons and ruffling his wings, Holly stole one more glance at Ossie before pushing forward, hop-flapping his way to the first branch. He stuck eagerly to it and looked back once again.

“C’mon, follow me!” he called, never actually answering the question.

"But Hollllyyyyy!" Osprey flexed her own talons and eyed the branch. She was confident enough that she would make it, but she was curious. Just where was her friend leading her?

"Where we goin'?" She asked again, then lurched forward, beating her wings as she hopped to the branch and clung beside him.

With the combined weight of two fledglings making the branch shake and move gently up and down, Holly was hard-pressed to decide exactly where to go from his perch. Looking around, he realized that he hadn’t really thought much about the entire situation at all. But after a moment, he had decided on a new course of action.

Ossie’s repetition of the question made him turn his entire head, looking at her with an expression that might have been sheepish.

“Well...I, uh...don’t know yet,” he admitted.

"Well... Well... I tell y'what! We're gonna go onna'venture!" Osprey spoke boldly, but the shaking of their perch caused her to worry slightly, which was clear through her momentarily clamped eartufts.

She gave the slightly sheepish Holly a brief and encouraging preen "Jus' where we gonna go, hnn? Gotta think of someplace awesome!"
PostPosted: Mon May 05, 2008 7:40 pm

Ossie's nervousness was contagious, and Hollyhock's own eartufts flattened as soon as he noticed his friend's expression. After a moment, though, the branch ceased its more frightening bobbing, and simply rocked a bit. Holly found this highly preferable.

...Adventure? He liked that word, though he probably would've never used it himself. "Okay, onna 'venture," he agreed, then started sidling closer to the trunk of the branch so it didn't bounce around as much. "But Iunno where we're gonna go," he admitted very quietly. "Where's someplace awesome near here?"

He could think of a handful of places that sounded exciting because he had been told to never ever go there, but he thought that might be a bad idea. So he fluffed and smoothed the feathers on his head rhythmically, thinking.

"We c'd go... Uhm..." She thought soundly as she sidled after Holly in favore of a sturdier perch.

"We c'd go..."

She was drawing blanks when it came to awesome places where fledglings were allowed.

"How 'bout we go scoutin'? We c'd go 'n practice!"
PostPosted: Tue May 06, 2008 6:35 pm

Now Ossie was in control of the situation, giving Holly the opportunity to watch and react to it, rather than trying to immediately lead and control it. The idea of going scouting was a really good one, and Holly laughed cheerily.

"Kay!" he said. "Scoutin' it is!"

And he spread his wings and flap-hopped to a branch not far from Ossie so that both their perches were more stable. Looking at her with interest, he waited for her to suggest where they should go scouting first.

Now Ossie was in control. When she was in control, she did not seem to think things through all the way. She wanted to appear quick and smart, with a plethora of ideas.

"How 'bout we go east?" She pointed with a wing in a direction that she assumed to be east, though she was not absolutely positive on that. "I 'eard from a'dolt that there's biiiiig waters if y'go far' nuff. Mebbeh we c'n fin' something interestin' t' report!"

- A'dolt: Not meant as an insult like "A dolt." Basically it is how my youngest sister pronounced Adult for the longest time. X3
