Ever since I have been interested in BJD's (about 3 weeks lol) and decided for sure I was gonna get one (about a week ago) I have known I wanted a zoomorph.

That's a normal human doll with just a tail, ears, or both. Nothing too furry, and not a full on anthro doll.

So I have a few questions and making animal ears and tails. But first a few notes about what I want/ don't want.

~ I do NOT want ears attached to a hoodie or a wig. I am wanting to make ears I can take off without changing clothes or wigs. (probably with magnets?)

~ I do not want to buy any pre-made ears or tails. I am only going to make ears, tail, underwear and socks for my dolls, because although I have pretty good sewing skills, I do not have time to make full on clothing sets. So the ears and tail will be my own very special gift for him/ them.

~ I DO want to make ears and tails from a pattern. I know I could wing it, but I would like to see exactly what they will look like before hand, and just tweak the pattern as I see fit. I am not good at imagining how it will look >_<

~ I will be making both the ears and tail from fabric/ fur, not epoxy, clay, or other moldable material. I have not worked with that stuff before and I think fur ones would be better for what I am wanting.

~ I am a new member of DoA, but my search for patterns there was not VERY in depth but I could not find anything helpful as of yet. Any links to a thread there are acceptable ^^

So now the questions.

1) Do removable animal ears/ tails count as clothing or accessories? This will help me in my search for patterns.

2) Does anyone known of any websites that have patterns for ears and tails?

My ideas and conversation topics in the next post ^^

This is how I would like to accomplish the ears/ tail.

1) I would like to use a pattern. (preferably one that has pictures of what the finished product will look like).

2) After sewing the fabric inside-out so no seams will show and turning it right side out again, I will put some bendable wire inside the fabric before sewing it closed.
(I want to be able to pose the ears/ tails extensively ^^)

3) My idea for the ears was to also hot glue a magnet to the wire on the inside of the ears.

4) There would also be magnets epoxied (yet removable) inside the head where the ears will sit.

I am unsure of Step #4 because I don't know how big the magnets would have to be to be strong enough to be magnetic through the fabric of the ear and the wig. Any help/ ideas on this step would be GREATLY appreciated. (This is my main problem at this point)

5) For the tail, I would also do a magnet in the tail, and a magnet glued inside the pants maybe (but still removable, so probably with regular white/ craft glue).

I do not want to glue the tail to the pants for fear of the glue residue on the outside and then I would have to change the pants to take of the tail.

If you don't have ideas, discussion is still welcome ^^

Conversation about zoomorphs, especially pictures (but not photostories) are welcome. If you post pictures, it would be nice to post what company/ model it is, and if the ears/ tails were bought separately, are connected to the wig/ pants, or if they were handmade.

Discussion about full anthros is not really appropriate, but what distinguishes a anthro from a zoomorph is still okay. The lines an what is what can be blurry and differ from people's opinions.

Also, if someone could post a link to guide about the most common ways to distinguish between the two would be very helpful. I have a hard time explaining the difference. razz

Off-topic conversation is definitely allowed, as I would like to get to know others who have/ are interested in zoomorphs, but it either needs to be about zoomorphs or not about bjds at all. For talk about other types of bjds, I'm sure there are better suited threads for that, and I'm not gonna be mad if you talk about a non-zoomorph bjd, but people not interested in other dolls (like me) will not be interested.

Alrighty, thanks in advance and hopefully this thread will be a good place to come to discuss zoomorphs ^^ sweatdrop

About myself:

I am a 19 year old female from the United States who just recently found out what ball-jointed dolls were from my younger sister. She is 17 and also an avid Gaian.

Although my first bjd will be 3+ years away, I already know what I want for the most part.

I want a Dream of Doll (Dream of Teen series) Lahoo. He is 64cm and lovely!

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

He already has somewhat of a back story, but I will go into that later in the thread if anyone cares to hear ^^

He will not be a zoomorph all the time, and I will probably use the same ears and tail for other dolls (some bjd, some not) hence the MUST on removable aspect.

Anything else you want to know about me (whether related or not), check my Gaia profile or just ask!

Now open!

Also, this thread will most likely be image-heavy, since I would really like pictures of how people made their ears/ tails, so if you have slow internet or other problems with pictures, but would still like to hang out, I think there is a way to disable pictures in others' posts so you just see the code? Not sure about that sweatdrop

Hey Jen, here is a link to a thread in the DoA gallery; the doll has what looks like homemade little bunny ears. 3nodding

a Zoomorph...what an interesting title.
well,on DOA there are alot of owners who have dolls with animal traits but it's not exactly part of the doll? The doll simply wears the ears and tails repeatedly to get the point across. or the wig is shaped as ears or something smile
totally cool,check it out

uhm... i'll try to help you somehow but please forgive my bad english... sweatdrop

for the ears i would highly recommend using an alice band or the magnet-version. the alice band is just a suggestion in case that it doesn't matter too much that you will see the ears AND the alice band. if you wanna hide the fixing you better use magnets. that would be the best solution for removable ears then. even though i don't know how strong they have to be...

for the tail i have 2 suggestions instead of using a magnet. when i cosplayed a "zoomorph" i used a belt i was wearing UNDER the dress and fixed the tail at this belt. another idea would be to add a snap hook on the jacket or somewhere. just a thing i remembered because i see so many people here with those jackets x'D

to make them movable you could add some wire to the ears and tail. just make sure that the ends of the wire is protected so that you don't ruin the ears and tail with it.

i would love to see a pattern either but maybe it would also be enough to know the measurements of your doll and just start right away.
hope, this helps anyway...
