For a while now I have really wanted to learn a woodwind instrument. I have narrowed it down to a clarinet and a tenor sax but I cannot decide between the two. I love the sound between the both of them but I am still not sure what to do. I plan to buy one this summer and learn it so i can be in band in the Fall. What are pros and cons of each instrument. What could I play with a clarinet that I can't with a sax and vice versa?

Clarinet hands down. I'm biased because I play the clarinet, I know, but my opinion stands. The clarinet sections are generally much closer than the saxes, and I've made a lot of friends that. Also, I think clarinets have a nicer sound than saxes. Plus, they can go much higher than an alto and annoy people easier. Not that I've ever done that...no, of course not.

Now for the saxophone biased opinion! xd

I think you should play the Tenor Sax. Not as many people play it, so it's more unique and it stands out more. It takes more effort to sound good, but once you get it right it sounds great. (I've heard a horrible tenor sax player and an amazing one...the amazing one sounds better than any other instrument, definitely.) It costs more money to buy, but it's awesome. And sounds great for jazz stuff!

My school has 5 different bands but 2 main ones. Jazz and Symphonic. The tenor sax is more for jazz and the clarinet is for symphonic. I play the clarinet, but I think the tenor sax is a really nice instrument too. I think you need more air for the tenor though cause it's bigger. If I were you I would get the tenor sax honestly, but that's probably because i've heard a real saxophonist play and he sounded awesome also because I already know how to play the clarinet so I would like to learn something new (I also like how it's shiny...) If you're okay with having a bigger case and something around your neck than the tenor sax, or a smaller, more convenient (at times), and easier instrument than the clarinet. Maybe you should listen to some recordings or someone actually playing them and choose which one you think sounds better.

Okay, the other day, I played Tenor Sax for the first time, so I can tell you what it's like.

It has a much larger sound, especially larger than any Clarinet. It's low notes sound great, and even though it can have boring parts sometimes, it's really fun to play. It sounds really good, too.

Tenor Sax is a lot of fun! =D

Well I play clarinet, and my brother plays tenor sax, so here's my opinion of each.

Clarinet-
You have the melody more often, and you're in a bigger section most of the time. Although squeaks aren't fun, they sound terrible and happen sometimes randomly.

Tenor Sax-
Fuller sound, deeper too and a very jazzy sound if you can pull it off right. Although you don't have the melody very often, and most of the time you're "not supposed to be heard" and be more of a backup for the trombones.

The tenor sax is huge and heavy with a huge case. While the clarinet is smaller and the case is more compact. The tenor can be jazzy but also beautiful and graceful! The clarinet is harder to play since you have to cover the holes with your hands. Plus, the clarinet is likely to speak more than the tenor. If your going to play tenor, pick it for jazz band because in concert/symphonic band your basically the backround and has the melody on special occasions. Which can be good if you don't like to be the center of attention because your afraid you'll mess up. Either way, I picked both.....I play tenor in concert band and clarinet at home. And yes my tenor is very shiny. It will glimmer in the stages light!

Clarinets are a lot easier to carry around, but I agree that tenors have a cooler sound.

I will forever say clarinet. of course im a clarinetist and absolutely luv it. xd you get alot of melody on the clarinet and its so kool. Yes, the reeds can be extremely annoying and irritating but both tenor sax and clarinets have reeds. i am very happy with playing my clarinet and wouldnt want to play anything else. whee either way, have fun playing an instrument!!!

Clarinet.

Its the most difficult, but when you master it, you can also play the tenor saxophone, alto saxophone, bari, etc, flute, piccolo, and oboe without much trouble, since most of the fingerings are the same.

but, if you were to start out with tenor sax, it would be difficult to learn other instruments and the clarinet because clarinet's lower register is different from flute, saxophone, etc...

I am going to have to go with Tenor Sax because 1. I play it 2. The sound of a clarinet is unbearable to me xd
Sorry, don't mean to force personal opinion on you xp
Not to mention awesome sound with metal mouthpiece ^.^

heart I play the clarinet heart , but if I were to play a different instrument it would be a type of sax lol . Saxes are bigger and heavier to carry around at band camp sweatdrop . Clarinets are lighter biggrin . Make sure to not jab yourself in the mouth with your reed . Anyway, they are both pretty cool, but if I had I different choice I would pick the sax because at our school at least there's only 2 clarinets and the saxes get WAY more attention. rolleyes
