Information taken from here.

Quote:
The entire plant is used in herbal remedies: roots, leaves, and flowers. The flowers are not usually eaten, but they are used to make wine. The wonderful weed has a strong herbal remedy purpose, and can help with digestion and other bodily functions.

The Uses of Dandelions
Gathered early, after the spring's first warm spell, the leaves and roots are used as a spring tonic and to stimulate digestion and vitality after a long winter.

Dandelion greens also have been used as a diuretic, an agent that promotes the loss of water from the body through urination. Their diuretic effect can make dandelion greens helpful in lowering blood pressure and relieving premenstrual fluid retention.

Dandelion roots contain inulin and levulin, starchlike substances that may help balance blood sugar, as well as a bitter substance (taraxacin) that stimulates digestion. The very presence of a bitter taste in the mouth promotes the flow of bile from the liver and gallbladder, as well as hydrochloric acid from the stomach.

Besides the stimulating bitter substances, dandelion roots also contain choline, another liver stimulant. Dandelion roots make wonderful colon cleansing and detoxifying medications because any time digestion is improved, the absorption of nutrients and the removal of wastes from the body improve as well.

Dandelions also are recommended for wart removal. The roots, stems, and leaves of the dandelion exude a white sticky resin when injured. Applied directly to warts daily or, preferably, several times a day, this resin slowly dissolves them.

I've always been told by my gardener aunt (may she rest in peace) that it is generally a bad idea to eat dandelions. What could cause people to say that, if it's such a good herbal remedy for things?

Well, they have to be taken in moderation.
Too much of anything that affects you is potentially harmful.
Also it depends on what part you eat.
Like the root.
The root can irritate your intestines and give you diarrhea.
The flower generally isn't eaten.
It's the leaves that one uses to make, for example, tea.
There's more information on the site I got this from if you are interested.

I'm always interested in potentially-harmful plants. XD My aunt and I went to great lengths to buy the prettiest poisonous plants for certain parts of her garden. The helpful plants are pretty cool too.

Actually, it is dangerous to eat dandelions unless they come from your yard or from somewhere in the wild. Reason: weed killer. Most people hate dandelions as much as they hate taxes, if not more because they can physically do something to it. Besides, if she's a gardener, then probably (in her mind) anything that hasn't been grown from a greenhouse is bad. Sad to say, but we live in a culture that has cut itself off from the benefits of nature, despite how much it wants to save it.

I've read about dandelion tea from an English herb book and Cunningham's Magical Herbalism. It's also really good in salad. I was at an Irish pub (it's closed now) in Norfolk, VA that served a salad that included dandelion greens. The wide range of flavors in the salad made it absolutely delicious. So I won't be using weed killer on my yard in the future (when I have a house). I'll be enjoying the fruits of my labor (or lack thereof).

one of the reason why people say eating dandelions is bad is probally mainly cause they are considered weeds. That main reason makes people think they are terrible for you even in tiny portions. Other then that as airune said that is very true.

people don't actually eat the dandelion. they eat the greens. the leaves of the dandelion, eaten as a vegetable.

but if you are allergic to dandelions and make you stuff up and sneeze. then do not, repeat do not eat or drink anything containing dandelion or dandelion greens.

this also goes for raspberries and raspberry leaves.

and anything else that may cause allergies.

it can be extremely dangerous. and deadly. be very careful if you are allergic to anything. read labels and be aware of the outcome.
