Have you ever made a plushie (or other sewing) tutorial?
  Yes, and it was hard.

Wow, first thread! xp (except for Chisa's welcome thread, of course. Thanks, Chisa!)

There are a lot of awesome tutorials for plushies out there, though so far all I've made are my own designs (except for a few things from The Cute Book). I'd never really thought much about what goes into them. But then someone in my gallery thread asked me for a pattern, and I thought, "Why not?" So now I'm trying to write a little tutorial on making this little felt guy.

Oh, my gosh, is it harder than I thought it would be! And more time-consuming. I'm kind of a details person (mathematician and statistician, very step-by-step thorough), so maybe I'm just...overdoing it, you know? Maybe I can leave more out. But I keep trying to write it, and then thinking, "That's not clear, I should clarify," or "I need to show explicitly how to get from that step to the next." Sigh. So it probably is just me being kinda OCD. But I think it would be hard even if I wasn't being so pedantic.

What do you guys think? Have you ever taught someone how to make something (I'm thinking plushie, because, hey, textiles subforum. So I guess it could be a dress or something, too.)? Have you ever tried to write a how-to, that could be followed without you there to provide clarification?

Edit: The (currently 2/3 finished) tutorial is in my gallery thread, in the 6th post: http://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php?t=12410189

well, I think it's a lot easier to teach things in person, but...have you thought of perhaps putting your steps in writing, but also make a new plushie at the same time and photograph each step?
I know I learn better through trying something or seeing it, I believe others are the same way.

The only plushie tutorial I've done is here, and it was reasonably well received biggrin I looked at a lot of other online tutorials to get a general idea of what works, so that might help. Your plushie is a bit more complicated than my one though!

Be sure to take some good photos of the process, I usually find pictures help a lot more than words for these things.

Good luck!

I have never made a tutorial, though I have started to (not plushie, but for cupcake decorating), and felt it a bit daunting. sweatdrop

I think that the method Chisa used to make her tutorial is awesome - a nice photograph and description for each step. If users need clarification on certain steps of your tutorial, you can always go back and add on when you have time, or add footnotes to steps to help clarify things.

I'd love to see a tutorial of your bear and candle, it is adorable, and I would love to try my hand at him for my friend's birthday coming up later this year.

Yeah, Chisa's tutorial is great (and funny xd ).

Taking pics of it as I go is a very good idea, that way I wouldn't have to be so wordy. But Rainbow Panda is finished, so I'd have to make another one, and I'm already in the middle of two projects. I have to stop typing, and start sewing sweatdrop

I read through the partial tutorial for the panda in your gallery thread, and I think you're pretty clear on the instructions! Pictures in future tutorials would probably just save you time. 3nodding

In the future, I do plan on trying to make the panda, and I was just wondering if when I start on it, if you would mind me PMing you if I had any questions on it? It seems pretty straight-forward, but I really shouldn't underestimate my ability to become confused.

Oh, yeah. You can pm me questions or post questions in my thread, whichever you prefer. Although I can't promise I'll get back to you right away; sometimes I'm on daily, sometimes not as much. But I will happily answer questions, if there are any.

Hehe, just as everyone else has said: pictures make things a little more smoother and less wordy... but peeking at yours I have got to say it's very well done.
If I could I would be working on a rainbow panda right now. =3
