It seemed like every week there was someone new joining daycare, or someone graduating out to the next level and starting school. Grayson was soon destined to become the latter, but with his time remaining, he still had plenty of opportunity to meet some the newer arrivals at the center. He knew what it was like to be in an unfamiliar place and not know anyone in your surroundings, so the moment he set eyes on the little unicorn boy, Grayson happily ran right over and stuck out his hand. "Hi!" he said, smiling broadly and radiating nearly as much sunshine as the unicorn toddler, "I'm Grayson!"

The daycare center, Bal reflected, was big. The buildings were big, the playground was big, and above all the other children were big. He figured if he stayed long enough, he would grow big to match it, but for now he was feeling conspicuously small and lost.
He was looking around, a little lost in his thoughts, when another boy suddenly ran up and greeted him. He jumped a little in alarm, but after a moment's thought he decided he liked him and grinned back. "Hi," he said, taking Grayson's hand and shaking it like he was supposed to. "That's a long name," he said, although he meant it as a compliment. "I'm Bal."

Grayson naturally thought the opposite thing, and offered, "You can call me Ace if you like. That's what my fa calls me. He's a pilot, and he says that's what they call the best pilots. Do you have a mom or a dad?" It was presented as an either-or choice since so many of the children around here had single parents, as Grayson did, but at this point Grayson would not have been surprised to learn Bal had two moms or two dads or maybe even some sort of parental council to guide him through life. Grayson had learned better than to make too many assumptions around here.

"...I got a mom," Bal replied after some hesitation. He wasn't entirely sure who his mom was just then, but that was hard to explain. "Ace is a good name," he said gravely, nodding a little. "Are you gonna be a pilot too?" Being a pilot sounded like a good job. He had seen a movie once, where pilots flew around and fought and he thought they had saved the world or something like that, but he couldn't remember it all. It looked like they were doing something important, anyway.

"Naw, I like to swim!" said Grayson happily. Because his father Landor didn't know how to swim, Grayson had mistakenly come to the conclusion that pilots were people who didn't swim.
Against the backdrop of happily screaming small children, Grayson offered his hand to Bal again, as escort this time. "I can show you 'round! There's lots of toys and games."

Bal nodded, a knowledgeable expression on his face. He wasn't sure what swimming had to do with pilots, but then he wasn't really sure what pilots did in the first place, and he figured Grayson would have a better idea than he did. He stored the information away for later, so that next time there was a pilot on TV he would understand it better.
He smiled at the promise of toys and games, and took Grayson's hand readily. "Okay," he said agreeably, deciding that the daycare was a good place. He liked toys, and he liked games, especially tag.

"This is the main play area," said Grayson, who by this point had every cranny and nook down pat. He pointed to the various corners. "That's the puzzle wall, and you can take down any of the big puzzles or the games if you get a grownup to help you. They hafta make sure people don't eat the game pieces. That's the beanbag lounge!" Just another corner, really, but with plenty of big, brightly-colored and patterned beanbags for sitting on, and a bunch of little beanbags for the beanbag toss. It was a popular hangout, more for the seating than the athletic aspect.
Grayson steered Bal towards another corner. "Here's the big toy chest. They have all sorts of stuff in there! The best are the plastic toys. They have trucks and zai... music stuff." Grayson's foot caught a wooden block. "Oh, and we have LOTS of blocks. They're everywhere." Wooden ones and plastic ones in evey color imaginable. Mostly contained to piles or stacks, but a few stray ones like the one Grayson had kicked.

Bal listened attentively, trying to remember everything so he wouldn't have to ask again. It didn't work so well; his head hurt by the time Grayson was done explaining, and he thought some of the information had gone and pushed the earlier stuff out. He rubbed his head and frowned a little.
He smiled at the blocks, though. Blocks were his favorite thing. You could make them into anything, a castle or a car or a big pointy tower, and if you didn't like it you could just knock it down and try it again. "Those're nice," he said airily, not wanting to seem too excited. He bent down and picked one up; a red one, wooden and heavy. "Will you build with me?" he asked, looking up at Grayson. He had never built a tower with someone else, but Grayson had showed him around and it was only fair that he share the tower.

"Sure!" agreed Grayson (who so far seemed willing to agree to anything). He happily plunked down next to the nearest pile of unclaimed blocks. He used his bigger size to reach out and sweep some of the scattered blocks into the main pile for Bal's benefit. "Whaduyou wanna build?"

Bal smiled and sat down facing Grayson, his tufted tail wriggling with pleasure. "A tower," he declared, setting the red wooden block down in front of him to serve as a base. "A big tower, like a sky...skytoucher." Towers were the most fun because they were so tall, taller than him, usually. There was something strange and exciting about creating something even bigger than himself.

"I like that," said Grayson in admiration. Skytoucher. It sounded straight out of a fairy tale. Had he been familiar with skyscrapers, he might have known what exactly Bal was referring to. Instead, Grayson pictured something akin to the Tower of Babel made from blocks. He picked up a nice green block with the letter T on it.

Bal smiled, pleased that he had remembered such a long word. "I saw one once," he boasted, picking up another red block. It was long and slender, too thin to work, so he put it back. "It was real big, I couldn' even see all th'way up," he continued, finding another block and turning it over in his hands. It was made of thick blue plastic and fat across the middle. He decided it was acceptable and set it on top of the tower.

Grayson, in a moment of genuine confusion, asked, "What colors was it? How tall were the people that maked it?" He discretely started adding a few blocks around the base of the structure for support, since if he just kept piling on blocks up top, the skytoucher would soon reach a point where Grayson's height would give him an unfair advantage. He wanted to keep things fair to Bal. (It did not occur to Grayson that a solution to this potential unfairness was all of eight feet away in the form of a chair.)

Bal closed his eyes and tried to remember. It was hard, and in the end he could only come up with something indistinctly tall, but he remembered the lights. It had been a little dark out, and all the windows were lit up like candles on a great grey birthday cake.
Grey. That was what color it was.
"Grey," he said, nodding a little because he was sure he was right. The second question was harder, though, and caught him a little by surprise.
"Well," he started uncertainly. "Well, they musta been big. Like gian's. Or maybe they had a tall ladder." He picked up two more blocks, a yellow one and a purple one, and stacked them both on top. Talking about the skytouchers had brought on a sudden burst of ambition, and he wanted their tower to be tall and beautiful too.
