Kynan rolled over in the grass, bored and lonely. The trampled grass smelled sweet and pleasant, but it was so quiet... Though he had no desire to meet his father again, he almost missed the danger. He had grown up constantly afraid as a foal, and being safe all the time gave him a feeling similar to an itch that couldn't be scratched. The best way to soothe that itch was to mingle with friends, all of whom were away at the time. Sighing, he looked longingly up at the clouds and closed his eyes to think.

Shoalin groomed her light fur, making contented noises in the back of her throat. Her siblings were both dark; she was lighter, and she loved her fur. She loved being different; standing out, being herself. The small unisus spread out her wings and let out a small whinney of joy. The grass was sweet; the sun was warm, and her siblings- both moodier than she- were off elsewhere. The yearling could be as bright as her fur, with no worries of her siblings being irritated by her cheerful demeanor. She let out a happy laugh at the thought and snuffled at a flower. Her eye was caught by a bumblebee in the flower next to it; and she laughed again. It was fat, fluffy- and oh so very cute! She followed it as it buzzed from the flower to another, then another. Finally, it flew off more purposefully and she chased it, laughing. "Wait, come back!" She galloped along; watching the bee so intently that she paid no attention to where she placed her hooves. There was nothing she could do as she tripped over something unseen and fell, mane over tail; her out-stretched wings not helping at all. "Owww..."

Kynan yelped as a sharp little hoof collided with his soft underside. "Ouch!" he cried, springing to his feet. Right beside him sprawled a pretty little filly, light-colored with a darker mane and tail, with lovely golden yellow markings. She was the loveliest little thing he had ever seen, despite the fact that she was awkwardly splayed on her stomach. Walking curiously over, he nudged the little yearling curiously. "Are you okay?"

((By the way, Shoalin is a yearling; just a couple of weeks until she's an adult. ;3))
"Eeyargh!" The unisus tried to scramble to her feet, but her hooves betrayed her and she only succeeded in tangling herself up further. Her golden eyes peered up at the unicorn she had collided with. "I'm sorree!" She really did look it, too; her short mane falling around her horn, her wings flopped out and her tail an undignified heap. Her embarressment was clear in her eyes. "I didn't mean to hurt you, I wasn't looking where I was going- Oh, oh, are you okay? I can heal you if- Hyahh!" She tried again to get to her feet; and again ended up in a heap on the grass. She pouted; determined that she would apologise properly for her carelessness. The unisus had been clumsy as a foal; but she was rapidly becoming more graceful- apart from when she was as careless as she was now. Focusing on what she was doing instead of her humiliation and guilt, she rose to her hooves in a controlled movement and stood next to the male. Her voice was breathless as she spoke. "I am so sorry!"

((Oops. sweatdrop *edits*))
Kynan quickly stepped forwards to help the filly up, his eyes betraying laughter as she managed on her own. "Don't worry, I'm alright," he assured her. "You just surprised me, that's all." He pulled his gaze off her, blushing slightly. She really was such a pretty, dainty little thing... "What is your name?" he asked quietly. Why, oh why, did he have to become so hesitant and nervous right now, of all times? He wanted so badly to make a good impression.

Shaolin snuffled at the unicorn's sides, where she'd struck him by accident. "I'm still sorry! Are you sure you're okay? You're not just saying that, are you?" She was suddenly put in mind of her father's lessons on ettiquette and jumped back to give him some space; all four hooves delicately tucked together. She tried to halter her babbling, too; it seemed to be embarressing him, which was the last thing she wanted to do. "Uhm." She flicked her mane out of her face; the golden lock at the front falling around her striped horn. "My name is, it's... Shaolin." She lowered her head shyly so that the lock of mane fell forward, creating a curtain through which she peered. "Uhm, what is your name?"

((Oh, I thought her name is Shoalin. Her cert says Shoalin... sweatdrop ))
Kynan flinched slightly at Shaolin's gentle touch. "Mostly..." He really wasn't really hurt, the flinch more a nervous reaction than pain, but he didn't want to reveal it all. "I'll be okay." He found himself nearly staring again, fascinated by the way the unisus peeked through her mane. Was she...flirting? Catching himself hastily, he answered, "Kynan."

((Again, a while later...)) Kynan sighed, pacing in circles around a pond. He was feeling restless again--that sense of unease that was permeating the valley.
Search groups went out almost weekly, trying to find the lost foals who never came back. Kynan chafed at being earthbound, only able to search the most obvious, nearby places. He felt worse than useless.

Despite being fully grown, Shaolin had lost none of her natural cheerfulness or her sweet demeanor. She was still very much in love with life; happy to prance about or stare at flowers all day. She knew there was a lot of tension about; her sister, so intense and passionate, had snapped at her for being so cheerful in dark times, although no foals had gone missing for a while. Actually, no foals had been born in a while, either- that concerned her a little more. Where once families roamed the valleys, now only adults could be seen for miles around. Still. The slender mare shook her head; there was no point in getting all worked up about it- being unhappy wouldn't help anybody at all, would it? And if she stayed positive, maybe she'd meet a nice stallion who would help her... rectify that there were no young. The mare giggled and looked about. It hadn't happened yet- but she hoped it would. Oh, to be a mother...! But the only stallions she knew well were her father and brother; both imposing figures, with their dark fur, toned muscles and the strange, intense, golden eyes their whole family shared. Surely no stallion would even consider talking to her when she was about them- but she loved her family so much, she couldn't spend less time with them on the off-chance she'd meet a stallion. The mare walked slowly to a stream; feeding into a nearby pond with pretty little noises. For once, she was caught in a rare moment of gloominess; not noticing anything about her as she bent to drink. Sometimes it seemed the valleys were so empty; and as long as they remained so, how could they repopulate? It was a conundrum; she rarely got down, but the thoughts of permanently having nobody but her family for companionship, and the potential of the valleys becoming more and more lonely until nobody was left, chased around her mind. She barely felt the cool water in her mouth.

Kynan noticed, startled, a young mare just upstream from the pond, seemingly lost in thought. He couldn't tell for sure without getting closer.
He hesitated, but curiosity got the better of the young stallion. The newcomer's beautiful markings and contrasting brown and gold colors awakened a vague memory. Had he met her before?
With a slight pang of envy, he took note of her wings. She was free to go anywhere... Pushing the thought aside, he ventured towards her. A name drifted across his mind, from a childhood not far gone.
"Shaolin?"
((Em, Fal, is it Shoalin or Shaolin?))

Shaolin jumped slightly, issuing a slight squeak of surprise. She had genuinely been so lost in thought that she hadn't noticed the young stallion. ...He's about my age! The excitement of a potential friendship flooded her; washing away her previous gloom. The potential for new company; a new friend, who could perhaps even introduce her to others! In her excitement she didn't even notice he'd called her by name and just stood up straight; tail and head raised high, hooves tucked neatly together. "Oh, I'm sorry!" She smiled; her expression as bright as her gleaming, golden eyes. "I didn't s- say, do I... Have we met?" She frowned, curious, and stepped closer; her fact almost too close for politeness as she scrutinised him. The white and brown patches... Straight horn, grey eyes... Finally it sunk in that he had called her by name and she stood back a little; tilting her head to one side. "You... You called me by name, didn't you? Are you..." A vague memory; the body was different, but the eyes held something that was familiar, but so distant in her mind. Her eyes ran over him, from hooves to horn tip and back, with as little regard for politeness as she always seemed to show. "Are you... Kynan?" (( Shaolin. Once the shop's off hiatus I'll be requesting a cert change. ^_^))

((K, thankies. I was confused. Shaolin and Kynan would make an adorable pair! )) Kynan caught the glint of golden eyes as the mare looked up, washing away his doubts. This was the adorable, clumsy filly who'd bowled him over when they were little. He smiled at the memory. He almost hadn't recognized her, she had grown so graceful and lovely.
"You've grown," he mentioned, slightly shy under her searching gaze. Suddenly he realized she'd asked him a question.
"Oh, yes, I'm Kynan," he stumbled awkwardly. Since Savi left, he'd become painfully shy and awkward around females. He was afraid to reveal himself to another so deeply. "I--it's been a while, hasn't it?"

((They would- although foals from Kynan and Xai'Liin would be stunning. ^_^ )) Shaolin struggled to bring this young stallion in line with her memory of the sweet, shy yearling. He seemed even more awkward now- almost afraid of her, in fact. She chewed on her lower lip, then realised her curiosity and her lack of regard for common courtesy couldn't have helped. She lowered her head to hide her shame; but peered at him through a lock of her mane, as though it were a shield. "Ah... I'm sorry if I was, uhm. Rude." She smiled slightly; and answered his statement with a light-hearted one of her own. Even though she was trying to be well-mannered, her cheerful demeanor and joking ways couldn't help but take over. "Well, it'd be a little strange if I hadn't grown, wouldn't it?" She tilted her head a little away from him; looking at him almost from the corner of her eyes, her smile showing how she meant her potentially offensive words. "And yes- quite a while! It's some good fortune that let us meet like this- I was lonely!" She laughed a little; closing her eyes as she did so. She was so very happy to have met someone- and hopefully, she could try to make him as happy as she was.

((^^, that might be hard to roleplay--to explain why Kynan's mating with a female who I think is older than him...Is she?)) Kynan recognized the shy gesture from their last meeting with a loosening of tension. She wasn't much less shy than he was, though bright and bubbly.
With a gentle smile, he acknowledged her apology. "It's alright." She was much like Aki, his foster sister. Always cheerful and happy, though sometimes a little clumsy...
He took her response more easily than he usually might have, unusually at ease with this mare he'd only met once. "I guess I was lonely too." Remembering the reason he'd been lonely, a question came to mind.
"Have any of the missing foals been found?" Surely one with wings would know before he did. The matter of the foals and unease, though slightly further back in his mind than this new friendship, never faded from his thoughts. With a sudden jolt of fear, he realized that there were less unisi in the valley than he remembered there being when he was a foal.

((Yeah, she is- not a huge amount though. Harder to roleplay would be him actually getting her to stick with him for more than two seconds- she's not exactly social! Could be fun to try and see where it goes?)) That Kynan brought up the very thoughts that had been troubling her surprised Shaolin; and her face showed it. She frowned a little; thoughtful. "Not that I know of," she said slowly. "I was thinking of that before you called to me. Well, I was thinking of how there've been so few foals born recently, so there's not been many disappearences- but that's even more concerning, isn't it?" She stepped towards the pool, wetting her golden hooves in it as she spoke aloud, almost to herself. "The elder ones, I assume, are dying- although it seems to mostly be those without family ties. My father is one of the eldest stallions I've ever seen; but he's not anywhere near the end of his life... There've been so few others around, you're the first I've seen in ages. Jazzy hasn't seen anyone either... Oh, that's my sister," Shaolin remembered that she was talking to someone else, and not just to herself. "It's just all so odd..." The last statement was little more than a murmur.
