Well, I was looking through the San Diego East County Yellowbook (not available online) and I remembered something I read about CPCs using some very dishonest tactics to get their names listed under "abortion services". As usual, they claim to be legitimate womens' health centers that provide healthcare and medically accurate information, but they also use confusing names and try to get in with real abortion providers. In phone books, they also try to make sure they're first on the aplhabetical list by having names like "AAA Abortion Center". So I checked the phone book for that, and this is what I found:

Yes! They separate the two categories and provide an explanation of each! They also seem to have made an effort to keep it balanced, as there are only two listings under each one. (One of which under "abortion providers" was Planned Parenthood, which is a really good resource.) This is pretty cool, and I'm proud of Yellowbook for doing it. In comparison, the same page on Yellowpages.com also separates the categories, but does not explain each one, and some of the links look a bit ambiguous/suspicious.

However, my Yellowpages are not perfectly unbiased or dedicated to exposing CPCs for what they are....

These are clippings from the "Community & Human Services" section. Note: There is not a single real abortion provider on this list. There are no family planning clinics. There are only these CPCs.

So while I'm really proud of their honesty in making and describing the two separate categories, I'm really disappointed that they put CPCs in there without any kind of a description. But at least none of the CPCs listed have totally dishonest names, right?

I can't find a SINGLE CPC under a misleading headline, or even under anything, in the Eugene/Springfield phone book. I didn't check religious organizations, but nothing under abortion providers, or the Community & Human Services (there's no family planning under that, though).

So, I guess that would almost be a pro-choice bias? Not a single option that's NOT an abortion provider?

we have "abortion alternatives" and "adoption" but no actual listings for places that offer abortions. Even our women's health clinic is strongly pro-life (although if you twist their arm theyll put you in contact with a place about an hour and a half away. I tried it last appointment)

The new phone book for my area hasn't come out yet. sweatdrop
I would say it's mixed though, as there are a lot of conservative catholics & Muslims in my area, but it's also a more liberal democratic city.

Like - there's a Right to Life place at the end of my street, but there's a womens/abortion clinic 5 miles down the road.
One of these days I'm going to put a brick through their window before I leave for college, but you didn't read this and you have no knowledge that I would ever do such a thing, now do you?

My online Yellow Pages has several *sigh* 'Abortion Alternatives Organizations' listed. One of them is 'Kansans for Life' *stabs*. There are two under 'Abortion Providers Referral Services', one of which is close to where I live which offers abortions on site. I can't find my phone book, but I know there are some CPC, and some legit abortion providers listed.

My phonebook started using the "abortion providers" and "abortion alternatives" sections a couple years ago. However, when I started shopping for an abortion in early 2005, the wording was a little more ambiguous. Abortion alternatives were listed as places that "provided information, referrals, and alternatives."

I ended up accidently calling a CPC, and it was both hilarious and sickening. I told the woman I had taken 4 pregnancy tests and wanted an abortion. She then tried to tell me that OTC pregnancy tests fail "a lot" and I should come in for a test and if it was positive we could "talk about my options." At that point I realized that I was talking to someone who wouldn't be able or willing to provide me with abortion information and said "Uh....I'm gonna call someone else."

I had never heard of a CPC at the time, but thankfully I was familiar with patronizing, manipulative assholes. It makes me sick to think of how many women have been tricked by that one center, let alone all the others in the nation.
