The Hawaiians were a people without writing, who preserved their history in chants and legends. Much of the early history has disappeared with the death of the kahunas and other learned men whose function it was to pass on this knowledge, by means of chants and legends, to succeeding generations.
When the people who traveled the waters in desperate search of freedom in the form of new land found the Hawaiian islands however, the begining of the famous native stories and legends was a terror all it's own. Civil wars, treachery in families, royal blood lines gone bad, banishment.....And even before THEY came? Other natives of a fearful kind lived there......And there was a reason the island was uninhabited when the people of Hawaii found salvation there....
