Journey felt old. Ever since Liebe and Phobos had been born, she'd felt tired and ragged constantly, and since Patty, her annoying little ghostly white ferret, had bonded himself to her, she'd felt like collapsing into a deep slumber for ages.
She wasn't an old mare by any means. But raising such a filly as Liebe, one with infinite energy and little in the way of a filter between her mind and her mouth, had taken more out of the little gray mare than she had thought. She no longer wished to fly in the clouds, to soar with the eagles and laugh at the poor, land-dwelling buggers below.
And then there was Kiefer. The stallion that had left her, that had bolted when he had found out that she was swollen with his two children. Then he came back, begging for forgiveness. Letting him back into her life had taken her youth and innocence out of her, the ever-present sparkle in her eye fading only when she was alone. But Liebe brought it back when Journey was in a good mood, the sparkle shining bright knowing that she had raised her well-rounded daughter all alone.
Patty curled up on Journey's back as they continued across the meadow at a leisurely pace, his claws careful not to attach themselves to her delicate wings.
"Nighty night," she whispered to him gently in her dreamy, floating voice, giving him the love and attention she would have given her son had he stayed around their little family group.

Journey looked up from her somber promenade, perking her ears to the slightest sound from a distance. A dark stallion was trying to greet her, using a friendly whicker to draw her closer.
Patty's head popped up over her wings, his tiny little nose ever-moving as he tried to pinpoint the scent while keeping his sleepy, droopy eyes closed.
"No need," she whispered to the ferret. "Let's go." She put on her best friendly grin and trotted youthfully over to the stallion, stretching her wings out at her side and nearly unsettling her small cargo.
"Hello, there," she called out in her dreamy, floating voice. "Is anything the matter, or did you just want someone to talk to?" She smiled as widely as she possibly could; a true smile for a truly good mood.
