Kanoa quietly watched several foals playing in the fields, way past bedtime, wanting to join yet afraid. Though she had managed to make a few friends, she was still a very timid foal, sensitive to criticism and humiliation, which made her afraid to interact with others. Looking up at the clouds, she wondered whether there was someone out there for her. She loved Kynan so much, but he seemed so smitten with the blue filly, Savinka. Sadly, Kanoa retreated a little further into the forest, stopping by a small creek for a drink.

"Well hello. What is a pretty little thing like yourself doing out here all alone?" Grim asked as he stepped out into the light, seeming to melt away from the shadows, almost like he was one himself. "Shouldn't you be with friends?" The black yearling asked, smiling at Kanoa as he looked her over.

Kanoa backed away nervously, one hind leg sinking into the soft mud on the edge of the pond. "I--" Her throat closed up, a nervous beat thumping inside her. The black yearling had seemingly come out of nowhere, startling her badly. Somehow his horn, which seemed so benevolent and magical on Kynan and Via, frightened her. Even she had a horn, and they had never frightened her before...And his eyes...with no pupils. She was filled with unease, though she didn't know why.

Grim forced himself to look apologetic. "Did I frighten you? I didn't mean to." The black unisus stepped forward, dipping him head though his eyes never left Kanoa's. "I am Grim. What's your name?" He asked, once again looking her over. The yearling had seen her once or twice before, but this was the first time he'd allowed himself to be seen by her and it was only because for once she was alone.

Kanoa smiled nervously, despite her fear. This colt's smooth manners were quite disarming, almost...frightening. Shaking off the feeling, she gave a slightly stronger smile. She had to stop being so shy and nervous. "I--I'm Kanoa," she said softly. Forcing herself to meet his pale, alien eyes, she ventured to ask, "Where are you from? I...I've never seen you anywhere before."

"A lovely name for a lovely unisus." Grim commented smoothly. The black yearling stepped forward again so that his nose was almost touching her's, though he stood just slightly to her left. "I'm not really from anyone place. I live all over the valley, where ever I want to." He stated, still pretending to be someone that Kanoa could trust. "And you, my dear Kanoa?"

Kanoa smiled shyly, letting down her guard a fraction. "I...I live within the boundaries my parents have set me," she mumbled, feeling babyish and embarrassed. Fascinated by this yearling, who lived on his own and did not seem limited by rules, she asked timidly, "Don't you have any parents?"

"You still follow rules like a foal?" Grim asked, and though his expression was still friendly, his voice had a slight, insulting edge to it. "I have parents, of course, but I left them long ago. Why should I have to listen to their silly, stupid rules?"

Kanoa blushed, feeling vastly inferior and childish. "I don't...really see any reason not to," she squeaked, shrinking. "They're quite good to me." True, they were overprotective, but she had always assumed it was for her own good, to keep her safe. Now she began to have doubts. "Is there...something wrong with listening to them?" The filly was beginning to feel extremely confused, not at all right. Something was having a negative effect on her, but she didn't know what.

"Don't you know? Parents are always trying to keep their children from growing up. If you keep listening to those rules they tell you, you'll never have any stallion interested in you. You do want a stallion, right?" Grim smiled, though his pupil-less eyes held a slight hint of mischieft. "I can show you how to act so that you'll impress people."

((OMG Marge I LOVE your sig!!!! heart heart ))
Kanoa looked down, feeling bad that she was actually doubting her mother's good intentions. Yet somehow she was, completely fallen under this strange yearling's spell. "I--I don't know..." she answered. She did want Kynan, so very much. "You--you could help me?" she asked hesitantly. "I...would like to learn."

"Of course I could. You'd just have to promise to keep it a secret. You can't tell anyone that I'm teaching you or else they'll think that you're just copying me. You need them to think that you chose to act the right way on your own." Grim stated, twitching his dark wings. "Alright?"

Suddenly unwilling to admit that she was confused, Kanoa quickly agreed without thinking. Immediately after, she regretted it, but she had already given her word. She would just have to go forward with it. "What must I do?"

"Well first off, you've got to stop being so shy. If you're shy you'll just get bossed around a lot by everyone, even your friends. And, that brown and white yearling I've seen you watching will never notice you. Guys like girls that are outgoing and talkative. If you stay all quiet and always listen to your parents, well..." Grim trailed off with a shake of his head, sighing sadly.

Kanoa hesitated. "But...that would mean I would have to change who I am..." She had to find someone who loved her the way she was. If she was always changing, the person might not honestly love her, just the front she had put up. "I--" She looked down. "I cannot do that."
