My laptop is messed up T________T

I'll hit the power button.

The page that is all black except for the little blinking white underscore comes up. So far so good.

Then, this black screen with alot of words comes up saying that there was a problem the last time I turned it on (or something along those lines) and that I need to make a choice. The choices are like safeguard, safeguard with prompts, one other safeguard option, turn computer on under the status that it was when it was last turned on, and turn computer on normally. (so far I've tried every option except the second and third)

The safeguard option just starts listing a whole bunch of things that end in .sys, then leaves me with nothing else to do. Dead end.

Options four and five take me on to the normal black loady page, but then instead of taking the normal 15-20 seconds that it normally does, it goes for like five minutes, brings up a blue screen for about half a second so I can't read it, then starts the cycle over again as if I had just pressed the power button to turn it on.

I WANT TO DO THIS WITHOUT GOING TO GEEKSQUAD OR ANYWHERE IF POSSIBLE. I don't know how they'd react to my extensive mp3 and manga collections. >.>;;

I MISS MY LAPTOP ALREADY AND IT'S ONLY BEEN NOT WORKY FOR LIKE HALF AN HOUR T-T

HELP PLZ??

User ImageThere's no option for "Start up system at last good configuration"? Or did you pick that one?

Other than that, what were you doing before this? Did you download anything?
Was anything acting weird before this?
Did you install anything new?
Uninstall something?

That was the fourth option, which I tried.

Well, the last time I was on was this afternoon, and I was just doing normal stuff. Looking through Gaia and deviantart and IMing with my friend.

I haven't downloaded anything since Saturday morning.

No, nothing weird at all.

Nope, no new programs. No uninstalling either. The last thing that I downloaded on my laptop was Doubt chapter 7 on Saturday morning. (Through BitTorrent)

User ImageYou could try doing a repair installation of Windows if you still have the CD.
It would reset your windows folders/settings, but it wouldn't touch your actual files (if you did it correctly). But otherwise I really don't know what's going on.

You could try the Computers & Technology forum.

Well, if I had to guess based on what you said and how you responded to Q's questions, I'd say that something in your Windows OS (XP or Vista, whichever you've been cursed with) has goofed. A file got changed, deleted, or corrupted, that was necessary...

But, that's just my guess... And if I had to "theorize" about it... I'd say that no, you weren't hit with a virus, spyware, or whatever... but that the hard drive either got bumped or lost power while it was messing with said file... A laptop is portable, and battery powered, lending it to both being knocked at a bad time, or losing power at said bad time. But, that's just a guess... all I can do is try to reason it out...

Or Windows could have just up and decided to die... I've had that happen before too... x_o

However, Q's suggestion to try a repair installation with your cd is a good idea... Basically, anything that doesn't involve some type of hardware destruction (eg. HD died, mobo fried... etc.) *should* be able to be fixed that way... either that, or at worst, a complete reinstall (but, you'd want to somehow back up your files...)

Also, from what I've heard/read (never had to take anything of mine into 'em) the "geeks" *coughglorifiedsalespeoplecough* at worst, they'd search your compy for "risque pics" of yourself to keep... and at best, they'd do it and ignore what the files are... I've never heard of Best Buy or any other computer repair shop ever turning in customers for pirating anything...

That being said, if you have to do a destructive reinstall (eg. wipe everything and start over), you should go find whatever geek/nerd/technophile you can talk to, and see if they'd be willing to back up your hard drive for ya... it's honestly not too hard, provided the drive still works. Just get it out (ok, for *some* laptops this is a pain), and put it into an external enclosure... copy files off of it onto another compy, and bammo, files saved. But, this is why "experts" recommend you back up your hard drive (not that I do, but that's besides the point...)

Oh, and I should have asked this before... but did your compy just shut off on you while it was running, or did you actually get a chance to turn it off, and it's acted like this since? o.O Other than that though, your answers to Q's questions are informative, and you'll probably want to remember 'em if you have to ask someone to look at it for you...

o_o

Good luck? And if there's anything else you can think of that might help point to a solution... say it? Any lightning storms recently? Destructive younger sibling? Bad horoscope? o__O( )

Oh, and if you don't have the repair disk, see if you can't talk to your laptop manufacturer to get one shipped (A LOT of companies just set a separate partition and put a disk image or the like... x_x)... or get said technophile friend to use one of his/her disks... o.o

Er, okay, I'll stop typing now.. x_x

Good luck! ^_^

I'll see if I can find the repair disk. I'm sure we have it, since my dad keeps like EVERYTHING.

I've heard from my cousin that works at best buy that most of the geek squad has no idea what they're doing, so I'd also prefer not to have to take it there if at all possible. I don't have any risque pictures, though biggrin

I don't know any geeks/nerds, though D: I can see who my friends know, I guess...

I had a chance to turn it off, although the last time I turned it off I did it the hold power button down way cause I was in a super hurry to get to a concert neutral

No lightning storms, I don't have a sibling, and I don't read my horoscope XD;;

WAITAMINUTE. It was raining on Friday night, and me and my friend were outside with it for like three minutes in the rain because we really needed to get internet connection at the time, so we leeched off a store near her house. It worked just fine afterwards and on Saturday and on Sunday morning-afternoon, though. o.o So I don't think this was the cause. I hope.

Ummm... nothing else that I can think of o-o

User ImageWell GeekSquad wouldn't fix your computer anyway. They'd probably just reformat, without your consent, and then hand you a clean windows install saying it's fixed. You can't find your beautiful files, and they charge you an arm and a leg for not bothering to try and fix your problem.

Don't bother with GeekSquad. If you really can't figure it out, see if your laptop's still under warranty and call the manufacturer.
Or go to some other place. There are mom & pop computer stores around. Try going to one of those. Or looking in the phonebook.

Any place you haven't heard of for tech support is probably a good place for tech support.
... Just goggle them before you actually place an order to make sure nobody's complained about them.

Kay, soo me and my dad have decided that it was probably my turning off the computer the wrong way that caysed the harddrive to come to a screeching stop rather than a gradual one, so then something happened (he mentioned clusters somewhere in here, but I have no idea what he was talking about.)

He says that a repair disk would probably work, but we don't have one.

SO.

Where could I get one? D:

Also, he said that this happened to him once, and he had to hit some button during the half second that the blue screen comes up to make it stay up. I NEED to find out what button that is, because I don't want to hit the wrong button and have something bad happen Dx

Its usually an F key, which one depends on the make of your computer.
PostPosted: Mon Apr 14, 2008 6:01 pm

It was F11.

Anyways, guess what? My computer's designer was too lazy to make a repair disk for it. So basically I'm screwed, unless I can find someone who can transfer my files from my hard drive to my desktop, but I know NOBODY TECHY AT ALL D: I'm going to see if my school's computer teachers know anything about this, or if they know anyone who can perform this operation.

Most of my files I could care less about, but I REALLY don't want to lose my art folder or my mp3s folder. The mangas I can just redownload, so I'm not so worried about those. I can get maplestory and bittorrent and such again, so I'm not worried about those either. OMGWAIT. My anime episodes. I CAN'T LOSE THOSE. THEY TOOK FOREVER TO DOWNLOAD. SOME OF THE DOWNLOADS DON'T EVEN EXIST ANYMORE.

...

I NEED to find someone D:

If you lived near me, my school would do it for free. As a "class learning experience", but they'd fix it. :3 Though backing up is usually on the customer's head.
D:

Best of luck to you.
I can't think of a thing to help/

Sadly, I don't D:

And I highly doubt that my mom would drive me for 2 and a half hours just to have my files saved by a group of students D:

I emailed one of the computer teachers at my school about this, so I'm going to wait for his reply.~

Yeah, doing the hard shut off like that could (probably) have done it...

And thus, a normal repair installation should work...

Did it have xp? vista? If you can get a normal install disk (not necessarily a manufacturer's disk), you can do a repair that way... you *might* have to update some drivers afterwards, but you'll still have all your files...

And, if your comp teacher's nice, you might be able to convince him to lend you an install disk for said purpose (if I'm not mistaken, you won't have to use another key for a repair... er, unless you have xp home or pro and are going to the version of xp you didn't have) so there isn't any legal/ethical issues behind it... But some school types are paranoid as hell... o.o

And I haven't ever had to take a compy into a shop for anything (I once had to call up a manufacturer about their mobo blowing... but that was not my fault, and hell from what I heard, it was systematic with their compies) so I can't really comment on too much about Q's advice where to take it... but what he said does make sense. ^_^

If you can find someone with a windows disk they're willing to let you borrow, then you're good...

Hell, you might even be able to convince your mom or dad to take it to where they work and have their job's IT staff fix it for you... ^_^

But, at least it's not anything too bad, thankfully. Good luck! ^_^

"Windows XP Home Edition Setup

...

That's bad, I'm guessing D:
