"Ah," Watch said aloud. He had finally remembered in which direction home was. But was he really ready to leave? He had met several wonderful pidge already. Was it for the best that he leave? Yes, Watch told himself. I belong in my home, not in someone else's. But... Do I have to go home now? Watch spread his wings, as if to take off, then put them back down. He couldn't decide. This was a delightful place, but he really didn't feel comfortable there. Still, the company of other pidges was quite nice. I'll go home now, Watch decided. And come back later. That way, it's no problem! Watch was glad that this had been decided, so he went about to freshen himself up before the long flight. He took a quick drink from the nearby brook and began to preen his wonderfully inked feathers. As he did so, Watch wondered how big the raccoon babies that lived near him had gotten.

Letter beat her wings happily as she flew low to the tree tops. She felt so wonderfully free soaring like this. She had been close to the flock for a few days and felt she needed to breath some fresh air and explore. The wind whistling through her feathers was exhilarating and in all of the exitement of swooping over the trees she burst out into song.

"Well I was walkin' down down the mill one night and wot did I see?
Dandy of an 'andsome pide cooing to me,
He held out 'is wing and he gave mine a shake,
He had so many colours I could have sworn he were fake!

Well the fella leaned in close in looked in my eyes,
Hundred times more charm than a couple a couple a guys,
Said 'Dearest fair lady, what am I to do?
I do believe my heart has been taken by you.'

So he flew me to the rooftops and we talked all the night,
Never in me whole life had the stars shone so bright,
But he slid 'is wing 'round me, said 'soon I must fly,'
Then my gentle pidge was off when the sun hit the sky!

So I sat on my lonesome and dreamed day by day,
Where he was goin' never once did he say,
I sat and I wondered, now where could he be?
'Till I saw him roosting with my sister Marie.

But I didn't mourn long because I soon I did learn,
Even though it hit me and my heart seemed to burn,
That's it's not about plumage 'nor colour or size,
No what really matters is what you've got inside.

Almost instantly Letter spotted a pidge beneath her as she finished her last line. She had never seen this mysterious pidge before. He was wonderfully inked and all alone. Curiosity overwhelmed her and after thinking for a moment she landed a few meters away from him, so as not to startle him.

(You know I said I'd update you on my song? Well there it is, and the reason why I took so long XD)

(( Wonderful song! ))

Watch looked up, calm as ever. When he noticed a pidge, he fluttered right on over and held out his wing for a shake, just like the pidge in the story. Watch hadn't heard the song, so this was just a crazy coincidence. (Of course!) "I'm Watch for Bears," he said, always ready to meet a new friend. "May I ask your name?" Watch, despite Letter's opinion of her feathers, thought that she looked rather nice. But then, he liked the colors-- inked and natural-- of almost every pidge, thing, and animal. Raccoons being his favorite, of course.

(Thank you very much Ren ^^)

No matter what Letter had sang in her song, it didn't by any means say that she thought inking was pointless. She thought it was a lot of fun and at times very beautiful. Just like the pidge who was standing here, his feathers were beautifully inked, but it didn't hurt to look at because the colours blended wonderfully. She had heard the old nanny in the cotton mill tell that story many times to young pidges to teach a lesson, and Letter had simply developed it into a little song. Letter smiled at Watch, he seemed very friendly. She shook his wing with hers. "Course you may." she said brightly. "My name's Letter. It's nice to meet you Watch For Bears. I've never seen you 'round these parts before." She said thoughtfully.

(( I'm not Pur. gonk ))

Watch replied, "Well, I am new around here. Actually, I was just about to leave... But I guess that I'll stick around a while longer." Watch bobbed his head. "And you may call me Watch, since Watch for Bears tends to be a beakful!" Watch let out a small chuckle. "I can't say that I've seen you around before."

( gonk Sorry for that mistake DX It's because Pur and Ren both have three letters. I'm not going to make that mistake again however I hope. *Thumps head* sweatdrop )

She nodded, "I have to say it is a very impressive name." She smiled once more at the patterned pidge. "Yeah, well I suppose I haven't flown in this direction often before." Said Letter. "But it's peaceful ye know? Really pretty here." She fluttered her feathers a little, breathing in the sweet scented air with a satisfied sigh.

Watch sat still for a while, also breathing in the fresh air. After a minute or two of silence, Watch said, "Are you up for a long flight?" That's right; Watch was considering taking this pidge to his home, far off and in the campground forest. Humans were bound to be there at this time of month, dropping scraps of food with every step. Oh, it would be delicious!

Letter blinked at Watch for a moment. She had been slightly caught off guard by his question, not expecting that kind of question right after an introduction. She thought for a moment, and really couldn't why not. You came out here for some adventure after all. You came to explore, to get away from the flock for a while, so why not? She thought to herself. "I'm definitely up for it. Where to Watch?" She asked spreading her slate wings slightly as she spoke to him.

"It's quite a long ways from here, but maybe you'd like to go to the place that I was about to go to. My home. Big Ma's flock showed me great hospitality when I had injured my wing during that storm that blew me way over here, so I want to pay those pidges back. I live in a wood, where humans camp in the spring, summer, and fall. They leave food everywhere, so it's easy pickings. In the winter, I eat the nuts and what humans call 'jerky', which I store in my tree during spring and fall." It was spring then, and Watch knew that he was behind on gathering. But no worries; he always ended winter with more than enough food. "Want to go?"

Letter ruffled her feathers a little. If she were human she would have been blushing, it was such a thoughtful offer coming from this friendly pidge. Letter couldn't help but beam at Watch, fanning out her tail feathers then back in a shy flutter. "Oh Watch it sounds wonderful, I'd love ta come, that is um I mean if you don't mind me coming." She finished. What a special place, Watch had his own tree. She wondered how he had come across it.

"No, not at all!" Watch beamed. "Follow me!" And, at long last, Watch leaped up into the sky to fly home. It had been so long! Watch composed himself, to stop from being so excited. It didn't make such a huge difference where he was, really. As long as he had food, he was good to go. But... Something about being able to call his great tree 'home' made him look forward to this flight. He circled above the area he had so recently been, then flew in a homeward direction. "Let me know if you get tired," Watch told Letter, not knowing if she could fly five miles in one go. "We can take a break and chat if it gets to be too far."

Letter nodded in agreement. "Sound's like a plan." She said not too far behind him, enjoying the wind in her feathers once again as she soared through the air. She was curious about Watch's home and very happy about his kind invite. She would have to find a way to repay his kindness some day. What a wonderful meeting this was, she was filled with energy and was reveling in the flight. "Ye know, humans are pretty amazin' but I still can't imagine life without wings. They have the metal noisybirds they ride in, but that's just not the same." She said as she flew a little higher.

"You're right," Watch agreed. "Other creatures at least have four legs, but humans only have two, plus two stick-things on their shoulders. Arms, they're called. Humans don't even have tails!" Watch said, ruddering his own tail to catch a good thermal and rise up higher. "I'd feel sorry for them, if they weren't so mean to us. I've seen humans with shiny tube things-- boom-sticks-- and they use that to kill things! I don't know how it works, but if a human with that stick sees a deer or even sometimes rabbits or squirrels, the stick explodes and the poor animal just dies! And the little humans are just as bad. They chase any bird, or anything at all, really, to make them run or fly away when they were just minding their own business. My notion is that all humans are violent and awfully terretorial, so it's good that they don't have wings to fly with or more legs to run faster with." This was a rather long speech for Watch, but he felt quite comfortable speaking his feelings to Letter.
PostPosted: Sat Apr 12, 2008 3:02 pm

Letter nodded in solem agreement. "Oh those smaller humans are terrible. I've been chased by them more times than I'd care to count! As for the boomsticks, I haven't seen one go boom but I've heard them. And they kill the poor creature with one of the loud booms? That's terrible." Said Letter shivering slightly. "I'm rather sure I've seen small ones on the humans who dress up in dark or shiny clothes, with the funny things on their 'eads. Wot are they called again?" She wondered out loud. "Poli-somthing. Those humans have so many strange words. They're fascinating to watch with their ways, but I just keep clear. They leave wonders behind." She said slightly more brightly.

"Yes. Despite all those bad things about humans, they do drop marvellous objects. Seems that they drop more than they pick up! You should see the campgrounds in the forest we're going to; humans drop everything there! Paper, food, flashlights, napkins, you name it! And the monsters that humans make are just as bad as humans themselves, if not worse. Many a good pidge are killed by what humans call a 'tacks-y'. Then there are cars, which spit out a disgusting smoke-stuff." Watch shook his head, hit dead air, and fell a foot or two. Watch had to flap his wings to gain altitude.
