This is for a software assessment due in a few months. I want to be able cover basic theory that can be applied to any instrument, as an interactive flash program. As part of the design process, i have to interview and poll for peoples opinions and suggestions. So i'm asking all the kind people of the musicians forum for their opinions on the program, what should be added, taken away, ideas for games etc. Critique on the 'objectives' would be useful, though the games and scoreboard is pretty much mandatory because there needs to be some programming involved. Quote: Problem Definition: To teach basic music theory to beginner musicians. Objectives: To explain and evaluate the importance of music theory to beginner musicians. To demonstrate and explain the concepts of important elements of musical theory to beginner musicians. To provide interactive games for practice of the concepts and elements of musical theory. To evaluate users results from the games and provide information and assessments of their results, by the use of evaluation and a ranking scoreboard to compare with others results. Survey sheet:What instrument do you play, and at what level? What current sources do you use for music theory? Books, tutor, school teacher, other? (please specify) Are you content with current sources of information on music theory? Why? What do you think could be improved on the sources of information you use? Do you think an interactive Flash program would be suitable to teach basic music theory? Why? What flash games do you think could help aid in teaching theory? Would you use the suggested program if it were available? Any further comments/questions you would like to share? I also posted this in the Musician's Forum but haven't got any replies as such.

What instrument do you play, and at what level? I play piano as a hobbie i can do alright if i play daily but i am still a beginner What current sources do you use for music theory? Books, tutor, school teacher, other? (please specify) Just general inspiration Are you content with current sources of information on music theory? Why? Yes i am completely content, because i can compose out side the rules of music theory always giving my stuff a vareity you normally don't see What do you think could be improved on the sources of information you use? Just general playing experience Do you think an interactive Flash program would be suitable to teach basic music theory? Why? I think making a game out of it would be a great idea, it would help people absorb what they learn more. i do think you should make it so people can hear the notes though and be sure to bring something new to the table as other programs are out there What flash games do you think could help aid in teaching theory? Um, any decently made by a competent music maker? Would you use the suggested program if it were available? I cannot say for sure, I have never tried the program, give me a link and we'll see Any further comments/questions you would like to share? YEs, I just posted a new topic people just compeltely ignored, i did your survey now help me out with what i'm doing.

What instrument do you play, and at what level? Guitar, grade 7 contempory/jazz What current sources do you use for music theory? Books, tutor, school teacher, other? (please specify) Books; Thoery For the Contempory Guitarist (Guy Capuzzo), AMEB Teachers Theory Resource Book (2005), Guitar Method (Garry Turner and Brenton White), My VCA resources My school teachers, my students also (they ask questions I havnt, and I gotta answer them biggrin ) www.learn2hear.org (fantastic oral theory) Are you content with current sources of information on music theory? Why? I am, although I would like something on the web for my students to do, as I have spent a lot of money on music books, and regret making them do it too. (plus they'll like interactive things) What do you think could be improved on the sources of information you use? If they could make it interesting for not just the mature users, but the young too. They need to show in what context this theory would be useful. Do you think an interactive Flash program would be suitable to teach basic music theory? Why? Would be fantastic, for the simple reason, that young learners often dont have the patience to sit down and write something down, or play it over and over again. They like using computers. What flash games do you think could help aid in teaching theory? I currently know of no flash games that help music theory Would you use the suggested program if it were available? If it were correct, free and ever updating... yes Any further comments/questions you would like to share? No, thankyou, although I am interested to know if you put your game up on the web, as if it were good, it would be ever so useful

What do you think could be improved on the sources of information you use? If anyone could access it for free. smile Do you think an interactive Flash program would be suitable to teach basic music theory? Why? Yes, I use an interactive Java program already, Flash could be similar! biggrin What flash games do you think could help aid in teaching theory? Hells yeah! I finished my program, handed it in, although my Software Design teacher has it at the moment. (Got 93%, hells yeah!) I'll post it up probably on tuesday or thursday (when i go to school). It turned out to be a bit different to what i expected, based more around guitar then my original plan. I think i'll play around with it an tweak it, see if i can make something more of it :] I'd like to thank everyone for their feedback though, it was very helpful and muchly appreciated. heart
