((In this thread, you play yourself, so OOC is normal. So I don't know why I'm using these brackets.)) You step into a large, bright classroom full of desks. At the front of the room is a whiteboard, a projector & screen, and a podium where your professor, the venerable Mercurius James, stands. "Welcome to Role-Playing 101," he says cordially, gesturing to your seat. "Please, sit down. We have a lot to cover before you're ready to start." On the white board, the following words are written: For this exercise, you have a modifier of +5 to hit.
You have a +4 modifier to defend.
Your d20 roll + modifier must add up to 15 or higher in order for your action to be considered a success.
If you fail, your Luck for this exercise is 5, making your Critical Threat 8 (13 - Luck = Critical Threat);
You may roll 1d12 (this is called a Dare Roll) in order to either a.) turn a failure into a success b.) turn a success into a critical success (more damage, succeed in a big way, etc. depending on the scenario.)
But if your Dare fails, then a.) your success turns into a failure or b.) your failure turns into a critical failure (your weapon breaks, etc. depending on the scenario)

Jonny walks in and looking around indifferently at all the desks, decides to pick a seat in the back right of the room. He's still wondering what OOC means... stare

((OOC stands for Out Of Character and you usually denote things that you, the player, are saying/thinking or comments you'd like to make with brackets like these. Generally, we try to keep OOC to a minimum when playing))
Reaching for the attendance sheet, Mercurius made a note of Jonny's presence before speaking. "Welcome to class, Jonathan. Hopefully the others aren't too far behind." He turned his back to write something on the whiteboard before another thought occurred to him. "Oh, and we prefer writing in third person, past tense...except when you're speaking, of course."

Jonny looked up from the carving he was making on the desk, "You got it, Professor... I think understand the 'why' behind that. I can't help but wonder though; will that not cause some interesting instances of things that happen before they can happen? As the living presume they will wake up alive each morning and that the sun will rise, will we not presume that our choices can be made without any conflict? "I walk across the bridge," presumes there is a bridge to walk across. If the bridge disappears, then there's a consequence that has to be delt with. If however, "I walked across the bridge," then there can be no conflict, my action being complete and the bridge presumed to be intact the entire time. Takes some of the risk out of living, don't you think?" Jonny said to the professor with a sly look on his face. mrgreen

Turning around, Mercurius slowly wrote Jonny's name on the board. A check by his name would surely mean recess privileges were revoked or at least severely hampered. There would be no four-square or dodge ball if Jonny were to keep this up! "Philosophy's down the hall, smart-a**," he said, turning back around. "Now open your text book to chapter 1, NPG basics."

The buzz of music spilled from tiny earphones nestled comfortably in Scias’ ears as he entered the room. Looking around for a moment, he reached down and tapped the pause button on the iPod just inside of his front left pocket.
"Can we sit anywhere?"

"Sure," said Mercurius without turning from whatever he was writing on the board. As though he had eyes in the back of his head, he replied to Jonathan as well. "And I'm sure you realize this, but twisted won't cut it in the forums, Jonny. Make sure your posts are at least 3-4 sentences long. Everyone gets writer's block from time to time, but I'm sure a smart kid like you will be able to think of something to write when RPing...otherwise, I'll put a check by your name." twisted

He surveyed the classroom for a few more seconds before deciding where to sit. It was perfect. Scias made his way to the darkest corner and sat in the darkest seat at the darkest desk in the whole classroom. With one finger raised he said in a low monotone voice, "Tender. A blood wine if you will."

Cutie sauntered into the room, red hair swept up in a loose ponytail. She sat down in a centrally-located chair, not at the back, but not at the front. With a sly smile, she simply sat there, looking pretty.
((She also apologizes if she sometimes forgets to disable her signature.))

Turning around, he gave a slight, knowing nod to Scias...as one fantastic RPer to the next, he recognized the subtle intracacies of his performance and the true genius behind it. Blood wine...the drink of all the best RPers in Ayanee and the Red Dragon Inn. This man surely had a heart as black as soul steel.
"Oh," he said, snapping out of his dark reveries and turning to the rest of the class. "Is this all of you...? Oh, well, I'm sure more students will begin sauntering in as the class goes on." Pointing to what he had written on the board, he continued. "I assume you've all read through the rules on the Guild Front Page. Just for review, who can explain to me Rule #1? No need to raise your hand. Just shout it out."

Quietly but confidently, she questioned: Sir, would that be the rules of conduct or the rules of playing?

"The rules of playing," he responded, still scanning the class for an answer. She seemed the brightest of the three...could Jonathan be bothered from his desk carving long enough to postulate an answer? Could Scias lift himself from the depths of dark despair long enough to ponder the question?

"Well, only 1 set of rules has a numbered value, so I'm gonna guess it has to do with the rules of the game."
RULE SET #1: A Roll of 15 or Higher = Success Whenever we attempt to do something where a skill would be involved, we have to roll dice to determine whether or not we succed in doing that thing. We must roll a 15 or higher on a d20 in order to do this, if we don't...we fail. Sometimes our skill points increase the chance of success by subtracting it from 15(or whatever number it is, if the difficultly lvl is higher) And a roll of 20 or 1 can significantly affect the outcome of the situation for the better or worse, respectively...
