I don't know what to name this! DON'T MAKE FUN OF ME!

edit: Bird-Watching
PostPosted: Thu Apr 10, 2008 6:33 pm

It was BRIGHT! And PRETTY! AND SUNNY!

All of these things combined made Thujone a happy stallion. Of course, chances were good that he would be unusually happy anyways, given that his mother was a happy person herself. And he couldn't really recall his father, except maybe when his mother pointed him out once or twice. But that was another story altogether.

Today, Thujone was engaged in the most curious of curious habits.

He was mare-watching.

Mares were such odd creatures, each with little quirks and habits that he found absolutely enthralling. And they were so darn PRETTY too. But it wasn't like that was the only reason he watched them! he hastened to remind himself. It was kind of like... well, it was kind of like bird-watching. You watched a mare to see how she chose to go about attracting a mate, or see how she kept her habitat, or what kind of foods she ate.

Some could say that these were slightly stalker-ish tendencies, but he approached it in a purely MALE manner.

Mare like red flower. Note to self... Bring mare red flower, and mare will like MALE!

And so it was that Thujone found himself (yet again!) about 1 inch tall and buried in the grass, looking for mares.

Vieno had wandered into the meadow for no real reason, she'd actually been silently humming to herself. She loved the spring time when everything seemed to be alive once again, the winter just killed everything... Not that she really minded the winter either! This optimistic mare seemed to like all seasons and most weather, it seemed impossible to get her down. It certainly wasn't impossible but it was a task most couldn't complete!

On this fine day, Vieno hummed a soft tune to herself, wandering into the meadow as she looked up at the sky. The clouds were spread apart, creating shapes in the sky, the sky was as blue as blue could be and the sun was shining down warming everything around. The mare noticed a few flowers off to the side of the field ready to bloom and she smiled, stopping her humming for that moment. Sighing softly, she spoke to the flowers, "Spring brings everything to life... hopefully you'll bloom soon."

It would seem she liked flowers but in reality, Vieno liked everything. So, leaving the flowers to get their much needed sunshine, she trotted away and moved to a patch of long grass. Ripping up some of the grass, Vieno munched happily and watched all around her as she did so.

That day she seemed to be alone, she didn't mind too much for she'd made so many new friends in the past few weeks. It was nice to have a bit of peace and quiet, wasn't it?

How curious, how curious. Thujone watched the newcomer avidly, remaining as still as he could, watching in rapt scientific fascination. Until she came right over to his hiding spot, and ripped down. A single part of his mind watched her mouth descending in horrified curiosity. Was this what it would be like? No life flashing before his eyes? Just a gaping maw, headed right for his head?

The rest of his mind spurred him into action, and he zipped off, further away with a screech, changing into his normal, foal-like size as he did so, shaking his mane. "Note to self. Mares don't watch where they bite." In this size, his voice sounded very strange, a deep bass rumbling from the throat of a child. "No bird-watching when they are hungry."

Vieno of course hadn't thought to look where she was eating, she'd never before swallowed a bug or... flutter. So, just as she was about to rip into some nice fresh grass something zipped out of the way and caught her eye. Blinking a few times, the mare gazed around the meadow, looking for whatever she had just tried to eat. In all honesty it wasn't intentional, she'd just wanted to have some fresh grass... but it seemed even eating your breakfast often had consequences these days. She felt terrible, she'd almost gobbled something up and she didn't even know what it was!

Then, as if something by miracle had answered her question of... what is it... a voice sounded and Vieno quickly scanned the area. To her surprise it was a flutter, a horse with wings that could change their size at will. Sheepishly she bowed her head, looking down at her hooves with a flushed and extremely embarrassed expression. "I'm so sorry, I never meant to eat you or even come close to it... I was... You're right... I should watch where I'm biting!" she stammered a bit, still quite embarrassed by her savage ways. If she thought about it, she was almost a cannibal! She'd almost accidentally eaten her own kind, wasn't that a little... awkward?

In all truth she'd never considered herself normal so there really wasn't anything wrong with being awkward. Being a cannibal... on the other hand... that was not proper, especially for a normal, grown born Soquili. She felt terrible and had to think of how the other was feeling, "Are you alright," Vieno questioned, "I didn't hurt you, did I?"

If she'd actually hurt him she'd never be able to live with herself, hurting another was just out of the question. Even if it had been an accident...

It spoke! Thujone had never spoken to a mare before- his mother CERTAINLY didn't count- and so her voice was at first ignored as he gauged the feeling of the blood rushing through his cheeks. How unusual. "I'm fine." He said finally, when her voice registered. "Didn't hurt me at all." He grinned now, flapping his wings. "I blend into the grass well. It would have been my fault if I'd gotten hurt anyway. I am fast, so it wouldn't have happened." he nodded, not able to resist sneaking in a little morale-booster for himself.

He danced closer to her, peering at her. "Never seen a real mare this close before. Such unusual creatures. The shape of the leg is a little different than others." Tilting his head, he tried to get a look at her underbelly, curiously. "What is your diet?" He asked, in a higher pitched voice, obviously asking her this one, and not just speaking aloud. "Mane and Coat are healthy-looking..."

Vieno nodded as the stallion spoke, feeling better after knowing she hadn't hurt him. She smiled now, listening to him explain that he was fast, for she couldn't say that about herself. Vieno was average in every way possible, or at least she seemed to think so, she rarely complimented herself or tried to make herself seem that much more special. There was nothing wrong with pointing out the things you were good at but she couldn't figure out what she really was good at. She had average looks, was an average runner and had average intelligence! At least she was well rounded, she often told herself.

The flutter was a curious creature, smaller than most of the other Soquili she'd met and he was right, he blended in with the grass. The mare often wondered what it would be like to fly, she'd met so many different individuals with wings by now. Deciding it was probably safer on the ground often ended that curiosity. His wings were different, they reminded her of leaves but she noticed they seemed to fit his body perfectly. After realizing she'd been staring, Vieno turned to look at something invisible behind her.

His voice caused her to turn back to gaze at him, it seemed he was talking to himself but she could still hear! She giggled silently when he said he'd never seen a mare before, she remembered her first meeting with Dante. Feeling a little self conscious about what he'd said about her legs, she almost missed his question. "D-Diet..?" she questioned while looking at him, "I uhm... grass and vegetation...?" The question confused her a bit, and the way he was looking at her made her a bit nervous but she decided to let him have his way everyone was curious at some point in their lives. She too was curious about everyone, even now, so all was well... for now...

He gazed up at her with curious red eyes before continuing his circle around her. "You may wish to call me Thujone. Of course, you may not, but it's my name nevertheless." He did believe in giving outs. "I apologize if I'm making you nervous. Grass and vegetation, common feed for any of us, but her legs are so hairy! How unusual..." He hadn't ever seen anything like it! He stepped back a bit and shifted again, changing to the size of his father's kind, so that he could get a less biased look at his new companion.

Now, what was it that 'seidon had told him to do with mares... not just watch, he was supposed to say something... "So... Did you fall from heaven? Cause you look like an angeni?" She didn't really- lacking the wings and all- hence the questioning lilt to his voice. But it was a line that his friend had ASSURED him would make a mare more interested in spending time with him. Though why he would desire the company of a mare, he was uncertain. They were so strange...

Thujone... what a curious name it was, but Vieno liked it anyhow. She wasn't sure if she was supposed to offer her name as well but, feeling it polite she did so anyhow, "I'm Vieno, pleased to meet you, Thujone!" She truly was pleased to meet the unique individual but some of the things he said did make her nervous. Trying her best not to blame him she just smiled, she knew everybody was curious when they saw something for the first time. It wasn't his fault that the first mare he'd met happened to be well... her. So all was fine, it was just innocent curiosity and Vieno didn't plan to stop him.

There was one problem though... her hairy legs... Vieno had always known her hooves were hairier than most other Soquili she'd met but she didn't think much about it. Now that the stallion had mentioned her legs she felt they were somewhat shameful, was she that out of place? Had someone told another mare her legs were hairy, nothing would have been thought of it for a horse's legs were hairy to begin with. Vieno on the other hand, took everything anyone said to heart and automatically added it to her faults list. So, shuffling her feet she stared down at her fur covered hooves and sighed. Nobody was perfect, she tried to tell herself but even that realization didn't help much.

The mare had to blink, her ears pinning back when he changed his size once again, she hadn't seen that coming. Slowly, her ears pricked forward yet again and she tilted her head slowly, staring at Thujone. She blinked a few times as he asked the strange question, not entirely understanding what he'd meant. Recalling once when she met a stallion with great wings speaking to her about the heavens she smiled, knowing now what the stranger meant. "Well, I don't think so... unless I lost my wings along the way," Vieno finally giggled, finally replying to his question.

Thujone blinked at Vieno for a moment, not quite comprehending why the mare was laughing. That was not the response she was supposed to give, was it? He'd been assured it would make their hearts flutter, and if he was lucky they would blush. But this one seemed to find it funny. Another pen-stroke in his mental journal, and he was ready to try the next one. "Miss Vieno, surely it wasn't that you lost them, but that they flew away, ashamed that they could not compare to the glory of your..." what was that next compliment supposed to be?

Eyes? Her withers? Her legs? Eyes were just weird, and to compliment a mare on her withers was just perverted. "They could not compare to the glory of your legs, Miss Vieno. They paled in comparison to the luster of your healthy coat."

((Sorry she's getting a barrage of bad pick-up lines. razz He's experimenting on her. ))

Her legs again? The mare shuffled her feet, unsure of how to reply to the stallion who seemed to dislike her legs. Vieno didn't have much self-esteem so normally when one said something upsetting her spirits dropped drastically. She tried not to let on that she was feeling a bit unworthy, but she felt as if she had to hide her legs now. So, pretending to be interested in a flower to the left of her she stepped into some taller grass. It was high enough to cover up her "hairy feet" but not high enough to cover up much else. After thoroughly examining the flower, Vieno smiled and turned to the miniature stallion.

"I don't think so, I probably would have remembered if I'd once had wings..." she stopped for a moment and sighed longingly at the sky, oh what would it be like to soar among the clouds? Well, she'd never find out but she was quite happy on the ground, to wish for something you couldn't ever have was just... well, it crashed hopes and dreams.

He visibly frowned this time. This was not... at all... the reaction he was supposed to be getting! His brow wrinkled and he huffed a bit. "Aren't you supposed to be flattered?" he tilted his head to scowl at her. "I'm trying to give you compliments." He looked rather indignant now, and he knew he was puffing up like an upset little bird. But he couldn't help it!

He felt so very bewildered right now. She looked mildly uncomfortable, and unhappy, and he didn't like unhappy. He liked her, she was pretty, and she looked upset, and it made him want to kick Poseidon for teaching him such poor things to say to a mare. "I know you didn't really have wings, but..." he sidestepped, embarrassed, ears tilting back.

"Oh, I'm silly," she sighed, shaking her head as she stepped forward, no longer feeling self conscious. "I don't know what's with me these days, I find things insulting when I know the others don't mean it." She giggled a bit, recalling some of the "flattery" the stallion had used, definitely not a great way to make new friends. "I think from now on you should comment some of the good qualities they do have, like your wonderful eyes!" she tried to show her new friend just what sorts of compliments most others appreciated. "Then again, mostly everyone has wonderful eyes so that's not that great of a compliment is it?" she wondered, knowing everyone she'd met before had very interesting eyes. "Maybe polite conversation is the best way to go."

That hadn't ever failed her yet, she'd always had such wonderful conversations with others. Not to mention the things she'd learned from them! She'd once been told about the breed of kalona, looking down on half bloods and being a very highly intelligent breed. She didn't think to sort out nonsense for she was a gullible mare, believing most anything anybody told her. Luckily she hadn't gotten in too much trouble so far, she was still in one piece and that was saying something when one had a run in with a kalona.

Feeling as if her mind had wandered, Vieno apologized, "I'm sorry." She quietly continued, "I don't think you have much to worry about, I think we could still be good friends," she gave a nod and a smile, she definitely didn't want him to feel down or embarrassed because of her silly reactions.
