~Some friends and I are going to Dragon Con in Atlanta and actually staying in one of the hotels this year, so we're all trying to make cool costumes. (Riding the subway to our roachmotel in a costume was kind of questionable in past years. xD)

So I decided to be San from Princess Mononoke because it's one of my favorite movies ever ever. :'D I love ittt. So far I've got the mask done except for a few small things like getting some black mesh for the eye and mouth holes. Anyway, here are some pictures!

For reference!

And then my interpretation!

I know it doesn't look exactly like her mask, and there are some things I kind of wish I'd done differently, like make the mouth a little rounder. I hope that it is at least recognizable! I am pretty proud of it. :3

The mask and ears are made from paper mache. (It's so hard. You could build a house out of that stuff.) I used some awful air-dry clay to make the rings around the holes, and I got the fur from etsy. I have enough left to make the cape!

I can't wait for D-con! What do you guys think?

It's looking absolutely fantastic! Does the clay make it at all heavy?

Now next is the necklace! I bet you can do it in the same manner as well.

Nice job!

~No, the clay was really light. The fur is what makes it heavy! O:

It's gorgeous! Was the paper mache hard to work with? I tried it once and I had a hard time with it.

I love the film, Princess Mononoke. I borrowed it from a friend.
I really like your mask.
It is deffinatly recognizable.
I was thinking of getting some paper Maché stuff, as i really wanted to make masks.
I remember making one from Plaster stuff in school, molded to my own face so it fit, was great.
I would love to see this when it is finished, the whole costume.
You have done an amazing job

Did it take a long time to make. The whole process of sculpting it and paint and drying etc?

That's amazing! It turned out so well. I'm sure anyone who's seen the movie will recognize it right away. It's rare that you see a San - good for you!

~It wasn't hard at all. It was my first time working with paper mache since elementary school. I used a half white elmers glue/half water mixture and it worked really well. The neat thing is you can sand it to get it a little smoother.

~I'm kind of impatient wating for stuff to dry, so I'd get a layer on and use my hairdryer on it, so I probably got about 4 layers on over the course of an afternoon. Then I put another newspaper layer, then a layer of tiny pieces of white computer paper. I don't know exactly how long it took me, but it wasn't that long. :3

Great job. I never used paper mache before but it seems kind of hard. I would love to see the finished costume!
