I would love to see an animated version of Red Dwarf. I don't mean a dopey kids' cartoon, but a real anime-adult type animation. It's probably the only way RD can continue with the original actors. They;re getting way too old to play themselves now. The animated version could be a prequel, continue with the series, do scenes from the books, even take the place of the promised-but-never-produced movie. At least we would have the original characters' real voices.
What do you think?

Personally, I don't like the idea. It would destroy the whole image of Red Dwarf, and what it is. The characters should be in the flesh, not in animation.

That's why I said an animation with the original actors, so that the voices at least would be the same. Otherwise, I just can't see anything new of quality with the original actors anymore. (And NO, NOT like those animations on the DVD's of the series- I can't watch those.)
Still wouldn't mind a prequel. That's the only way I can see different actors being accepted in the original roles.

How would a Prequel work? No one would want to know about what it was like before Cat and Kryten for very long. It would get boring.
Maybe a history of the Cat People, instead of a Prequel.

The Cat people would make a great spin-off. That's one of the few story lines that could get by without needing the original actors (or at least not needing them much.) A prequel could only work if it followed the books. There was at least a season's worth of stuff going on in the first book. You're right, though- that wouldn't be enough, would it? There's a ton of great material in the books, if only someone would start filming.

I like the idea myself, but I can't see it happening. I think as long as they all did the voices themselves, and it was really well done animation, to the quality of... possibly some of the episodes in The Animatrix, maybe, then yeah, I could see it working pretty well!
You're so right, though - there's so much material in the books that ought to be explored. And I think a Cat People spin-off would be pretty good, too!
The only other option to revitalise RD would be to recast, and that, I'm sure we're all agreed, would be awful.
