Fog crept its sluggish tendrils among the trees. It was the thick and clinging kind, and any creature that moved through it would soon find his coat glistened heavily with water droplets. Although nearly late enough in the morning that the sun should have begun to burn it away, the sphere’s heat was still hidden by clouds far overhead.

Kuragari got to his paws and stretched, the sleek muscles over his flanks rippling into motion. Then his ebony form ghosted into the forest and quickly faded into insignificance.

He could hear the faint sounds of rushing water not far off, and indeed soon the forest ebbed away on the mist to reveal a rocky stream. It was shallow here, barely enough to wet his paws when he stepped in among the smooth-washed stones, but wider than a ulaya could leap. The manacles clasped around his paws turned to ice against his fur as they met the water.

The past few days had been uneventful so far, and at the moment he had nothing on his mind. It had been nearly a week, also, since the god had last needed to seek out mortal-kind. By now he had begun to learn the subtle signs that heralded such an event – most of the time. It should be some days yet before Kuragari needed to hunt again. His head dipped down to drink the fast-moving water, falling strands of silver-black making ripples on its surface before they were tugged away by the current.

A settling feeling had fallen on the ulaya. This ulaya had found cover under a tree, which, with much thanks to it, had leaves scattering about it. Though he wasn't surprised to find the sludge of water dripping down, dampening his pelt and sending shivers up his spine. Actually he hadn't expected this, being reduced to nothing but hiding meat. This ulaya was always up in the action, acting much tougher than he usually acted.

And this is what he had been reduced to. Hiding from the rain and damp feeling that crept across the air. While in the time that passed, mist started to build up. It spread across the area and preyed on him, making uncomfortable wetness slip through his orange pelt.

A grumble.

Another drip.

And then a growl.

"I hate water. Any form of it. Rain, streams, water, water, and water. I hate the whole lot of it." The male's eyes blinked open. Gray struck his vision and the male winced. Surely he had expected to see sunshine leap into his vision.

Not this... This depressed dimension.

Water droplets dripping from his muzzle, Kuragari lifted his head, trying in vain to see anything through the fog. That had sounded like a growl - from the other side of the stream? It was difficult to tell, even if the stream had not masked the sound – one instant he could make out the suggestion of a trunk, a spread of leaves, through the blanket of white, but as soon as Kuragari turned that way, it faded away again into the water and the mist.

The cold wetness was more or less tolerable, but he did not like this fog, not at all. Kuragari was a god in his prime, little used to infirmities of the body, much less this blurry, frustrating visibility. It felt like going blind…

...But worse, somehow, because of the way every other sense seemed dampened. He took pride in the perceptiveness of his senses, and rightly so – but now, would he have any warning at all if some creature came upon him out of the mist?

No. This was like being… being mortal.

He shook the thoughts away as he irritably shook water off of his coat. Then, with barely a splash, he quickly crossed the stream in the direction he thought the noise had come from. Kuragari would not - could not - be taken unawares by any means.

His orange pelt bristled, irritated, eyes narrowing in an attempt to see past the dense fog that gathered around him. Hachi found it futile, though, his dragon-like tail flicking furiously. If any creature of any sorts lived here, he would be quite shocked to grasp a present view of the animal. Ghastly, foul-breathed. That's what he imagined.

A sigh left his nostrils. Loud, irritable, his muscles working past cogs as he found his balance. The dragon-like ulaya already found it necessary to escape this fog before it finally consumed him. And in his thoughts, he wondered if what he heard was true, because despite the horrible smell of swamp and the liquidy smell of fog, he found another smell. Another. And among the silence around him, he heard nearing paw-steps, as if another could be stalking him. Waiting.

Even though he was known to challenge others, Hachi felt his heart fall beneath his rising ferocity. "Now?" He whispered, claws raking against the hard ground in annoyance. He was certainly not in any condition to fight. Certainly not in this type of climate.

Certainly not with the mood he was in.

Head swinging around, panic aching from his head, the male swung around and continued left, his pace quickening.

Whoever this intruding ulaya was, he wasn't going to be seeing Hachi.

A sigh, a half-heard whisper; the faintest suggestion of smoke and char on the air. This was getting interesting. But then, mere moments before Kuragari should have drawn within sight of this mysterious creature, his ears caught the sound of paws moving off into the forest again.

Slit-pupiled eyes narrowed in annoyance. Well, this would extend the game a little at least, give him something to do while waiting for the fog to dissipate. Increasingly curious and even amused now, he followed, keeping just out of sight. With the weather making it difficult to track, more of his efforts were focused on keeping pace with his quarry than on moving silently, though the fog also helped to muffle his tread.

It never occurred to him to be wary of an unknown entity that could be drawing him into a trap; Kuragari was too used to his god-born supremacy by now.

Hopefully this wouldn't be the day he learned to act otherwise...
