The rain, it had poured the day before, though still lingering clouds threatened more. It was already past dawn and the sun still had yet to drag itself above the clouds and chase the mists back into the darkness. Fog lay heavy through the trees and open meadows. But there was a crispness to the air that made everything worth living.

Laying beneath the down turned branches of a sturdy elm tree, an ebony and pastel colored stallion remained asleep, his head tucked under a wing. Just as the first rays were starting to burn through the over laying clouds, the stallion started to stir, pulling his head up from under his wing he yawned. Vaguely noticing the stream of his breath that came when it touched the crisp air. Shaking the sleep from his head, he stood and stretched, oh he had had a great night's sleep. Moving away from the tree he stretched his wings straight up and moved them slowly to get any kinks out of the muscles.

"Oh what a night." The stallion grinned, though his eyes lit up at the sight of what laid in great puddles all around him. "MUD!"

Rearing with excitement, the stallion charged head long into the meadow before him and through a few of the smaller puddles looking for the biggest. Thin layers of cold watery mud coated his pastel hooves as he went, slowly making its way up to his legs as he went. Small clods of muck already adorned itself within his cotton candy colored tail, the day couldn't get any better... Could it?

User ImageThe mare groaned as her blue eyes slowly slid open. Thick, damp air filled her lungs, and one of her flowers was missing. It's probably flattened from my fat rump lying on it. Great. She had begun to think to herself a lot since growing up, giving herself a compliment here, some punishment there. Perhaps it was because there was little company worth talking to around here.

Dusty took her time getting up, only to realize what was all around her. "Eww!!!" Her eyes widened, and she tried to step around the dirty liquid, which was only a few shades darker than her. How awful it was to see something so disgusting everywhere. Something so... Icky. Today was going to be terrible.

As the clouds sifted and soon vanished to reveal a beautiful blue sky, Eton didn't notice as he was having too much fun on the ground. Wings fanning at his sides, he splashed though another puddle on his way to who knew where. Skidding himself to a muddy stop he changed directions, heading toward one of the biggest puddles he had ever seen. True it was very shallow, but it looked big enough for him to swim through.

"Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud. A day without you and it wouldn't be... Well not a good day." Eton tried to sing, though his voice was a little choppy as he couldn't think of how certain songs should go.

Charging head long into the muddy puddle, he had neglected to see if there was anyone else around, but being who he was Eton leaped head long into the water, making it splash not only against his already mud coated sides, but outwards as well. Small waves rippled over the surface and splashed against anything and possibly everything they could reach. Eton was just one over sized colt, one would have to wonder if he would ever grow up... Nah, most unlikely.

Dusty gazed into one of the many mud puddles. Her mane wasn't as bad as she thought it would be. Now where did that two-legger go...? It surely wasn't going to brush itself. The mare wandered through the forest, slowly making her way to the meadow, the two-legger she was looking for no place to be found.

However, she did manage to stumble across something else. She had no time to react to what was coming toward her. Mud flew in her direction, covering her side with large spots of it. "What on earth is your problem?! Don't you know not to--" She took a moment to look over what had caused this mess. "...Eton?"

Having had his ears back so that no mud would get into them, he hadn't ward a thing until someone had mentioned his name. Thinking it was someone else, he was about to snap, but stopped when he saw Dusty standing beside the puddle he was in looking a little... surprised.. He hadn't noticed that he was almost completely covered from head to hoof in mud, it dripped from his mane, tail and underbelly. His wings had a good layer of mud caked within the feathers as well.

"Dusty?" he questioned stepping a little closer to her, thinking that maybe it was someone else who looked like someone he had met when he was little. But it was Dusty, he would know them markings anywhere. "Did you come to play in the mud too?"

Looking excited all over again, he didn't check the reaction to shake and soon scattered even more mud everywhere and toward Dusty herself. Though it was a useless act, he would soon be covered in the stuff again anyways. Muddy mane stuck to his face in clumps even sealed an eye from sight, though it was easily cleared with another shake of his head, he looked no worse for ware, if one looked past all the mud at least.

"Come play with me Dusty, just like old times," He almost cried pawing at the puddle he was in. "Come play. Come play."

Dusty furrowed a brow and gave the stallion a stern look when more mud was flung toward her. Her expression quickly changed when he spoke. "Play? In that awful stuff? Why, Eton, you haven't changed a bit, have you?" She tried her best to smile, though it was hard when she knew how bad she looked covered in mud. That poor thing... Still a little colt at heart. How will he ever get by?

The mare did the best she could to get the thoughts to stop. "Besides, my flowers... Or what's left of them, anyway, would get ruined. It's very hard to find blue orchids like these so early in the spring. Especially ones that match my eyes."

Blinking a couple of times, Eton watched Dusty while she looked disgusted at the mud then went on about her flowers. He hadn't realized that there was so much to learn about mares who spent much time on their image. He always thought a bath and a good roll in the grass was well enough, then again, he wasn't a mare... Or he didn't think so anyways.

"Of course I haven't changed, why would I change? Should I have changed?" he asked turning his head to look back over his mud encased body. "And your flowers?" This he had to scratch his head about. "We could always remove them, so they don't get ruined. Then put them back when we're done?" He offered though didn't know how to put them back so that they would stay.

All this was starting to give him a head ache. If this was how all mares acted he didn't know if he could cope with it. Seriously, was their image THAT important that all lost their will to play? Slipping back along the puddle he still stood within, he had to sit down. Though yes it still smeared more mud into the strands of his tail, he didn't seem to care, Eton was too confused about what all the fuss was about with the flowers and how mud was icky. Wow, he had a lot to learn.

Quietly going over her weekly bathing routine, Dusty wondered if it was worth it. Sure, playing with her old friend may be fun, but what if anybody else saw her? She'd surely get laughed at for such foolery. There was some logic to taking her flowers out, but she always had to get help from her two-legger to get them back in. And if she bathed after, her mane and tail would surely be tangled, and she needed a two-legger's help with brushing it.

"Of course not... Though it wouldn't have hurt any." She grinned and nipped at him teasingly. What was holding her back from playing in the icky mud? Who really cared? "I suppose... I could play for a little while... But you've got to help me get my flowers out first, and then you've got to help me get the mud off."

'Though it wouldn't have hurt any' kinda perked his curiosity, what was that all about? Ears twitched slightly he watched Dusty closely as she came closer to him, even if he was still in the mud, and his body caked within a hardening shell as he just sat there. Smiling himself he reached over to n** at her mane in return with his mud splattered muzzle, though wondered how he was going to remove the flowers themselves with out ruining them, he would just have to be careful he supposed.

"Alright, These wings are good for more then just sifting through the air." He nodded yanking his rump off the muddy ground , his tail slick with a thick layer upon it, looking more like a log then the fine tail it had been. "Though lets find a good place to lay your flowers so that they don't get stepped on and stuff. Wouldn't want anything to happen to them." Oh he wouldn't hear the end of it if a flower got damaged, that was for sure.

"That's a good idea." At least he had some wits about him. Perhaps just beacause his play habits had remained the same didn't mean that his thought process had, too. "But... Where could we put them? They could blow away in the wind, and they could get eaten by other animals..."

She sighed heavily and looked around. The flower that belonged in her tail was already missing, and she didn't really want to lose any more. They'd come from her mother and she wasn't sure if she could find some like them. That, and they happened to match her eyes perfectly, and stood out against her boringly colored pelt to make her look even more beautiful. They're perfect. They've got to be, because I'm perfect.

Looking around, Eton noticed a small hole in a tree, well, more like an old abandoned owl's roost that seemed perfect to hide the flowers in so that they didn't get blown away or eaten by other animals. Come to think of it he hadn't really seen any other animals today and thought it was strange... Somewhat, even Smit hadn't bugged him today either, that was really strange.

"Would this do for a place to put your flowers?" he asked walking over to the tree and nosed at the hole, it was big enough and low enough for him to place something within and retrieve if wanted. It was also deep enough to hide almost anything place within it. "Don't think anything will find them here, and I'll even leave a feather so we can find it again."

Looking back over his shoulder, Eton wondered if it would really be that safe of a place, He knew the place being that it was somewhat close to home... Looking back at the tree, he looked it over, but didn't see anything. No animals here the flowers would be safe, he was sure of it. If not... Well then he would really be in trouble...

Having to stretch her neck as high as she could to see inside the hole, Dusty inspected it. It looked relatively safe. At least it was abandoned. She didn't want to have to deal with whatever had lived in it to get them back. "I suppose this will work."

She shook her head gently to get the flowers out of her mane, being sure not to let the fragile petals fall off. One by one they fell to the ground, all of them somehow remaining safe and unbroken. Taking one gently by the short stem, the mare stretched her neck up to put it into the tree, barely being able to reach. "I can't believe that I'm seriously even thinking about playing in this stuff." A hoof dipped into the mud as she let out a small groan.

Eton watched as Dusty shook the flowers from her mane, and watched them somewhat float to the ground and come to rest before being picked up and placed them into the hole he had found. After she had inspected it of course, Opening a muddy wing, Eton pulled a bright pastel colored feather, that was clean and placed it into the hole, with part of it showing so he could see it against the darkness of the bark.

"There, now we'll know where they are." He nodded before watching her dip a hoof into the mud. "Just think of it as..." Closes an eye in thought, "As just plain water, basically that's all it is, with earth mixed into it."

Stepping up behind Dusty, Eton gives a gentle nudge before pulling back and dashing head long into the stuff, letting it splash against the sides of his legs as he goes. The splashing moved outward some, but all around as the sun was growing hotter the mud was starting to dry into sticky pools that if someone stepped into them the would be stuck for a but. But the one that Eton was playing most joyously in was still fairly muddy. Wings fanning out some, he came to a sliding halt before looking back.

"Better hurry before it dries up, then it will be no fun until the rains come again." His voice holding a small bit of sadness at the thought of no mud, but from the look of himself, he could really use that bath.

The mare looked at her friend's wing with interest, watching him pluck a feather. "I still want some of those." She grinned. "Though... Doesn't it hurt to pull feathers out?" He had jumped into the puddle before he answered, but she figured it was alright. Hesitating, she put another hoof into the dirty water.

"This is so gross!" Nodding at him, Dusty closed her eyes, jumping into a puddle. Trying her best not to cry out in disgust, she walked around in it, making small noises.

Upon opening her eyes, she clenched her jaw. There was mud everywhere. In her hair, on her sides and legs, under her belly. It was, in her eyes, one of the worst things she'd ever gone through with. "Are we done yet? I don't think I can stay in here much longer."

Having been somewhat prancing in the mud, splashing it everywhere, his tail twitching behind him, slapping against the muddy surface of the water with a ker-splat. Ears turning slightly he stopped and looked over toward Dusty and how she was muddy from just walking around the puddle, sure after leaping into it as well. She had asked about his wings and if it hurt to pull the feathers out. Well it didn't really, at least he didn't feel anything...

"Not really, I never really feel anything when I pull a feather out." he shrugged lifting a wing, though it didn't really look like any where missing at all. "They always grow back, so I'm not too worried about pulling feathers." He nodded and splashed his way over toward Dusty.

She looked prettier splashed in mud then she had when she was clean to his minds eye. Then again, he didn't know how he looked while all muddy or when he was clean, only that it was easier to fly without the mud clinging to everything. With a soft giggelish laugh he pawed at the mud and slowly nodded, though it didn't seem like she had been in the mud puddle long enough, he had enough upon his being to make up for it.

"Yea, the suns higher then it was when I came out here. And the mud is starting to dry out. It won't be much fun in an hour or so. Really it's starting to get too sticky now." He said pulling a hoof from the mud making a sickly sucking sound when it came up. "I suppose it's bath time huh?" he grinning at this, knowing that it would take a few baths to get all the mud from his body, it would take something like a waterfall.
