To say Landor Niela knew nothing about watersports was a decided understatement. Landor Niela knew nothing about swimming. The idea of submerging in water for recreational purposes was as foreign to him as strawberry shortcake, which is to say both might have existed in some corner of his planet, but neither was ever popular or well-known.
It had taken a small intervention to convince Landor, who had never even heard of a penguin until Charles Aberdeen noted the similarity in appearance, that swimming might in fact be something Grayson was instinctively good at. It had taken three more interventions to convince Landor that Grayson might be so good at swimming he should be allowed to play in deeper water and be allowed to move more then three feet from the pool's side.
Finally, Landor had gravitated to the place he belonged: sitting at the pool's side and trying not shiver in terror as Grayson happily performed underwater acrobatics and bounced in and out of the water at least a thousand times. He had figured out early on that he could not use the pool's edge to slide, but diving headfirst in the deep end worked just fine. (It would be several more weeks before the Liberty Center's staff was presented with the idea to add a water slide to the facilities, which had really been designed with sports more than recreation in mind.)

While Landor was apparently oblivious to the existence of swimming, Aderyn was decidedly not. Serra had found she enjoyed it, though not as much as the showers used for people entering and exiting the pool, some time ago and with the arrival of her daughter some time previous, who turned out to be a mermaid, it had been agreed that another trip was in order.
Landon had opted to stay at home, refusing to be picked up and when he was, he kicked and screamed. Thus, Addie had to reach further into her dwindling money pouch to pay a sitter for the afternoon while she packed the 'beach' bag full of sun block, pool toys, and a change of dry clothing and towels. Serra had been stuffed into a bathing suit of her own choosing (A navy blue with raindrops on it, which wasn't surprising in the least bit) and an oversized shirt had been given for Nerissa to wear in the pool, given the fact that a bathing suit was out of the question due to lack of legs.
"Serra, remember, do not hog all the water. Be nice to people who actually need to shower." Addie's voice came from beneath her floppy hat usually reserved for working in the garden. Her suit was on beneath her light weight jacket (which was firmly tied) and a pair of khakis that she didn't mind ruining with chlorine if it came down to it. Nerissa was in her arms, positioned at a slightly awkward angle to accommodate for the aforementioned lack of legs, and she seemed excited.
Water.
With a sigh, Addie found a place beside the pool that was clear and let the girl sit herself on the side. "Be careful, Nerissa," she warned the little girl, rubbing her up with SPF-80 before allowing her to slip into the shallow water.

In the deeper part, Grayson observed the entrance of the mermaid with a little rush of excitement. First, there was the obvious point that she was his age abouts, and second, there was the point that she was different. Not in the same way that Grayson was, but in a comparable manner. He knew that it took people sometimes a minute or two to get used to him. His response was to accept everyone immediately and without prejudice. Perhaps the new little girl was the same?
Rather than force this assumption on the newcomer, Grayson darted into the middle of the pool to give her the chance to have that minute if she needed it, and waved at her whether she did or not. A friendly greeting was always preferable.

Water, water, water! The mermaid made a happy noise in the back of her throat before she dove completely under. One thing her mother didn't understand was that she COULD breathe underwater. She was supposed to, and she lived for the rare moments when Addie wasn't looking so she could. Of course, this likely wasn't going to be one of those times, considering her mother was watching her like a hawk but the small girl took all the time she dared before popping up again, water exploding around her from her breaking surface.
Addie looked like she was going to have a heart attack. It made her giggle, though it wasn't long before she noticed the penguin boy. Actually, she had no idea what he was, but he seemed to like the water as much as she did, and he waved at her, and so her natural response was to wave back, tail swishing in the water.
Friend. Well, potentially.

The tail looked like fun where swimmng was concerned, though not so much for running. Grayson did a quick bobbing dive and arced under the water, nearing Nerissa further, slicing through the water like a steel bullet. He was pretty fast for someone without a tail, his body pulled tight in a torpedo shape and webbed fingers and toes providing ample thrust.
