Josh quickly swiveled behind a tree and readjusted his ample backpack. The boy panted in small, labored puffs as he tried to recall why he was in this smoldering field during the most blistering part of the day. He could already feel his skin scorching and tightening under the harsh rays that the sun pelted at him. The boy squinted up at the sky and the bright orange-yellow disk within it, which blazed downwards at him like an ever watchful sentry. Maybe today was not the best day to find the elusive soul that he desired. Josh smacked himself in the face with a grumble. What was he thinking!!! This would be the best time to find the Br’er rabbit, even is the weather was rather brutal.
Josh’s auburn gaze drifted over the blossom speckled horizon as he tried to find the best place to set up his “trap” for the rabbit. The boy couldn’t help but adore the majestic meadow and become lost in its colorful wildflowers and lush vegetation. He was somewhat glad that this was the only plantation nearby, it would be a shame to go through life without witnessing this kind of beauty at least once. It was a true pleasure for the eyes. Unfortunately, he had never gotten the chance to meet the owner, whoever they were, of this particular estate. Josh moved stealthily through the bushes and flora paying special attention to leave no traces that he had come this way. He had no intention of running into the owner. If anything, the boy feared that he would be caught by a stereotypical hick; one who would release the hounds and come after him donning a shotgun in one hand and a beer in the other.
“Crunch, crunch, crunch” The parched ground let out a mild protest as Josh made his way to an open field. By now, his face was already streaming with slim slick trails of sweat. The boy slipped off him back pack and judiciously dumped its contents on the dusty ground below. His slim fingers first came in contact with a tacky and crudely constructed doll which held his soul bottle firmly in its clutch. “Hmm, not a tar baby, but good enough I suppose…” If anything the craft appeared more like a sticky potato than a child. Josh had read the popular myth about the rabbit and had even done some research on what he would be hunting today. However, his sculpting skills were not up to par with his investigation prowess. He set the doll in the center of the clearing and prayed that it would be enough to lure the rabbit. Josh stood behind a tree in wait…
One minute passed…. Five minutes elapsed…. Ten minutes drug on…. Thirty minutes slipped away…. and the doll still sat firmly rooted to the ground with a blasé look in its button eyes. Finally, Josh had enough of this waiting game and stomped over to the sculpture in rage. He took it up in his hand and examined it as if he would find some imperfection that he could fix and make everything work out. Nevertheless, everything seemed to be an imperfection…. “ARGH!!!” His cry echoed out of the clearing and passed the thin line of trees. The boy had already forgotten that he was an unwelcome guest in this field.

It was with great satisfaction that Eiry spied movement on the outreaches of their property. He knew the property inside and out by now, save the graveyard and what area laid beyond, but the area that he ogled shifts and movements was well known to the minty frei. So, it was with the silence of a ghost, that Eiry descended from his tree house, leaving behind Shalbriri the demonic lamb in his cradle, and melted into the marsh.
That's how, when Josh released an agonized yell of frustration, Eiry managed to slink up right behind the boy and echo his cry ten times over, ten times stronger, and ten times more frightening than any scream ever recorded onto a horror film. All of that...Right into Josh's ear.
Isikoro Etul Delaran, on the other hand, wasn't as eager. At the first sound of a cry from the marsh, Isi's heart skipped a beat. He hadn't been able to discern much, but if there was a sound from the marsh, then that might've meant that Edgar was back for another round of Clue...And Isi had no intention to try and guess what or where he was going to try and kill him with this time. He had too many close encounters with the Grim Reaper's scythe and he had no intention of coming a hairbreadth closer than the last. It was too soon, he was still in the last weeks of his recovery from Rivener's poison.
Then he heard Eiry's bone-chilling shriek.
Without a second to lose, Isi hobbled over with only one crutch to the closet. He had a shotgun in there that he used to threaten Old Maasi with (or Old Maasi used to threaten him with). It had a shell lying beside it, but he had never actually placed it in the barrels. He just kept it in case he ever really did need it. He hoped he didn't. He didn't want to become a killer at age 15. However, if Eiry was in danger, then Isi was going to protect him, no matter what.
In a couple moments, Isi was hobbling outside of the porch towards the field where he had heard the sound, a shotgun thrown over his shoulder and a grim mask of determination bolted tight on his face.

He had been caught! The only thought crossing Josh’s mind was the likelihood that he was about to be shot, stuffed, and hung on some hick’s mantel. The contorted, exaggerated scene played in his head over and over like an archaic black-and-white film. Josh’s blood froze solid in his veins as his heart was grasped by fear. The banshee-esque scream seemed to clench around the boy’s heart and dig piercing claws into the terrified muscle until it dampened each pounding thump into a soft murmur. Josh spun on his heels and his Nikes made a arid crunch as they dug painfully into the dehydrated soil. The boy gasped airily and when his frantic brown orbs fluttered down to face the person who executed such a grotesque and cacophonous noise only to find that the culprit was a familiar raevan. It was the same minty hued frei that he had met at a Valentine’s event what seemed to be ages ago. The boy was at a loss for words and his mouth opened and closed like a grounded fish. How could such a innocent looking creature be so scary?! The boy finally gained enough resolve to choke out a comment, “Heh, nice scream there…”
It was not long before Josh noticed a striking percussion of movement on the grassy horizon merely a few yards away and the flicker of a gun in the afternoon sunlight. The boy nearly lunged for his soul bottle and hid among the undulating waves of scratchy reeds. The boy prayed that the frei would keep quiet about his location.

Eiry puffed his chest proudly at the other, letting his throat vibrate in a ghostly chuckle. He was so proud! It was such an exhilarating rush to finally scare someone other than Isi and Aphismet and Rivener. It was nice to see the reaction of a different person who didn't know his motives or his tricks. A fresh new slate to work on. He still had some tricks up his sleeve that he had to pull and this new comer was going to be the brunt of it.
"Eirdirsceol! Get away from that person!"
Lifting himself up into the air with the simple flutter of his ethereal fiery wings, Eiry waved his grey arm at Isi who was currently fighting his way through the grass towards them.
"Isi! Did you see? I got him! I made him jump!"
"Oh, shut up, Eiry! Who is that and what the bloody hell are you doing on my property!?" the cripple shouted. He finally hobbled into the other's vicinity and gave a steely eye to the other, trying to beckon his raevan behind him. Now that he was closer, he was able to get a better view of the boy and he furrowed his brows, "...Josh?"

Isi’s confused expression was nearly mimicked on Josh’s stunned face. The boy’s mouth was frozen in an awe struck gawk. He gasped dryly, “ISI?! Umm, pleasure seeing you here!” Josh rose from the ground and dusted the fine orange-brown grains of dirt from his shorts, an embarrassed flush spreading across his narrow cheeks and a wiry smile plastered on his lips. “I didn’t know that you lived here.” The statement was said with such astonishment it was as if Josh still didn’t believe that another raevan owner was standing before him…. Or that he had done anything wrong by invading said owner's personal property. Josh shuffled a bit and seemed grounded to his spot in the brush. The boy held out his soul bottle dejectedly as if it would explain the situation entirely, “Well, I’m just trying to… you know… catchasoulformyraevan.” Josh said the last part in a inelegant hurry. Maybe talking faster would numb down the blunt of his mortification.
Josh looked from Eiry to the small , heavily armed boy before him. His face forming into the pitiful facade of a kicked puppy. “Maybe you could help me?”

Staring at Josh, as if trying to affix the other boy's existence in his mind, Isi scrunched his face into a frown. He didn't like the fact that Josh had sneaked into their backyard, even if their backyard was basically a huge plot of land with broken down fencing. It really infringed on his...well, sense of personal security. Josh's intentions were innocent, sure, but Isi had been going through too much lately to take any more chances. There were too many open places, too many undefended flanks, and he was still healing from his last deadly encounter. Josh probably wasn't one, but Isi couldn't help but be a little paranoid.
"Yes, I live here," Isi stated in a manner that probably came off as a little too cold. He shifted his crutch underneath his arm and stared at him, trying to unfreeze his face so that he didn't look so menacing. "Next time you should read the signs before you go jumping into other people's property. But...What is it that you're doing?"
Eiry leaned in and dispelled his guardian's confusion, "He's trying to catch a soul for his raevan," the minty frei gave a big ear to ear smile and pointed to the soul bottle Josh was holding out. He was very interested in the situation, and he wasn't quite sure what it was, but it had something to do with him. So this took all of his attention and he sucked it in like the marsh absorbs footprints.
Before Isi could speak and make a reply to Josh's question, Eiry piped happily, "Sure! We would love to help! What is it that you seek? I know everything in and out of these marshes."
That was true. Eiry did know a lot about these marshes, even more so than Isi. It was because he could actually feel the pulse of the dead through these marshes and he constantly was monitoring the spiritual and paranormal activity in and around the property. It was just his nature. So, it was with a reluctant sigh, as Isi stared warily at the marsh that held not only spirits but the malevolent ghosts as well, the crippled boy nodded his head in agreement and said, "...Yeah. Yes, Josh, we can help. It's the least we can do for a fellow raevan owner."

Josh’s taut smile only faltered a small amount when Isis’s serious tone washed over him in agitated waves. The severe tenor would have doused any other individual’s vigor. However, Josh was too worked up about capturing his soul to be put off by a few warnings or setbacks. The smaller boy’s advice seemed to fly straight in one ear and out of the other; it didn’t even stand a chance of rooting its good morals in Josh’s mind. It was as if Isi was taking the time to toss seeds into an abyss. “Yes, yes! I’ll be sure to ask next time I come over.” He easily dismissed Isis’s counsel and instead focused on the bubbling raevan next to him. Eiry seemed to have just as much unfettered energy as Josh, if not more.
When Isi gave his approval, Josh could have given the boy a rowdy pat on the back, if he wasn’t afraid that it would knock the wind out of his crippled body. Instead, Josh chose to partake in a more civil approach of gratitude. He gingerly took the other’s petite hand in his own and gave it a sturdy shake, “Thank you so much.” Josh grinned and huddled next to the frei. He voice was soaked with enthusiasm and eagerness. “I’m going after something special!” His slim palms came to rest on his head and swayed like a pair of large, rather malformed, bunny ears, “I’m going to capture the soul of a Br’er rabbit!”

"You better," Isi snapped, his freckled pinching into a frown, "Next time I might not have the safety on my gun."
It was as plain as day to see that what Isi, as agitated as he was in both stature and attitude, tried to do had no effect at all on the older lad. Sure, he could understand that he was eager just to catch a soul for his raevan; Sure, he could understand that in his excitement he just failed to put two and two together; and sure, he could understand that it was hard to read the faded signs that promptly displayed "No not enter, Private Property"...But Isi was not in a very understanding mood. Especially today of all days after he had been tricked numerous times by his ward. Eiry had him constantly on his toes and Eiry's shenanigans were supposed to be the least of his worries.
Growling low underneath his breath, Isi made sure he had the gun on safety before he slung it over his shoulder and watched the lad interact excitedly with his ward.
Eiry listened to Josh intently, his red eyes wide with anticipation. He was eager for another challenge and it was only right that he should be the one to help with this capture! When the young man mentioned "Br'er rabbit", though, Eiry was pulling up blank cards. He had never heard of anything called a "Br'er" rabbit. Sure, he had heard of rabbits, hares, jack-o-lopes (there was one he had seen once in this marsh), but he had never heard of a "Br'er" rabbit. But then again, he didn't know most things by their names. They were what they were to Eiry and he didn't think that it was important that they all should have a label. Perhaps he had seen it hopping around in the underbrush, he just didn't know it for its name.
"Br'er?" echoed Eiry, confusion passing over his grey face like the shadow of a passing by cloud, "I'm not quite sure, I'm not...Description, mayhaps? Why are you doing that? You look funny." Eiry high-fived each of the palms that were on top of Josh's head.
Isi rolled his eyes, he knew the story, he had read it in books before for parts of his studies. He was surprised that Eiry hadn't gotten to those books yet, but then again, he only did read ghost stories and the works of Poe.

Josh caught Eiry’s pallid hands in his own and gave a small harrumph. A faux frown played on his face. “Oh, so you haven’t heard of them? Well, they come from old folk myths. They frolic in the forest and cause mischief for those around them,” Josh paused in thought releasing the frei’s hands, “They also speak in human tongue I believe.”
Josh could feel the anxiety and rage dripping off of Isi. The discourteous feelings seemed to pool around the giddy duo who were absorbed in chattering about the soul. Josh couldn’t help but feel sorry for the boy though. At this rate, he would be the youngest kid around to keel over from stress. You could already see the slow but sure side affects of his mental exhaustion. The frustration-wrinkled brow, rigid frown, and graying hair; all testaments to his worrisome attitude. Josh looked over Eiry’s shoulder and his eyes locked with Isi’s turbulent and stormy gray orbs. Perhaps, he should give a more thorough apology before Isi decided he would rather blow off Josh’s overzealous head than continue with their exploration of the backyard. Josh stood up stiffly popping a few kinks in his back. He kept his own auburn gaze firmly affixed to Isi; as if his life depended on burning two identical holes through the boy’s small frame. “I’m truly sorry if this is a burden on you. I really didn’t mean to intrude so horrendously on your privacy. I’ll make this up to you some way! Maybe… I could help you work on the fences and make sure no unwanted visitors get in again?” Josh puffed up proudly. He could be tactful, when it was needed that is…

Eiry bounced once or twice on his ribbon, taking his chin into his hands as he thought, running through his mental library of the paranormal. He had seen lots of things around here and even then some since he had the uncanny ability to attract them, so he just had to have seen it once. He had seen a kikimora once before, which he ended up returning to Mouse's home where it belonged. If not he, then why not the other ghost's around the property? He remembered when Isi was disabled due to Rivener's poison he would talk on the porch with Percy, the mailman ghost. He was sure that he could've heard something about a rabbit that talked in his tales...Why couldn't he remember? Especially if this thing was trying to out trick him! He would know in an instant and he's out trick it in no time. Eiry's contemplative face melted into a determined frown as his red eyes searched the heavens.
Isi was only fifteen. He was sure that he didn't look like fifteen, nor did he act like it, but he knew that others undeniably knew him as a youth. So when the other offered to help him fix the fences, Isi was a little surprised. He wasn't expecting this kind of offer, but...It would do him a lot of good. Perhaps it would even release some of the stress?
"Um..." the bitter stain of displeasure faded away from Isi's face as he thought over the proposition. He gulped once, screwed his mouth into a frown and then shrugged his shoulders, "That would be...nice. That would be very helpful, actually. Thank you, Josh, th-"
Eiry had an impeccable habit of interrupting.
"Hopfrog, I think I know what you seek!" Eiry beamed brightly, throwing his grey arms into the air with victory, "A footquick earthbrown rabbit that lives on the very western edge. I've only ever seen it once, but we didn't have a nice conversation."
"Since when did you venture all the way to the western edge?" Isi sneered, giving an evil eye to his ward and puffing up his chest. It was times like these that he wished he was taller. "I thought I told you not to stray too far away from home without myself or Aphi with you!"
A guilty mischievous smile bloomed on Eiry's face and he held up his hands innocently, "I had Shalbriri with me, he didn't let anything happen, honest!"
"That's not what I'm concerned about, Eirdirsceol! It's the fact that you disobeyed me," Isi reprimanded sternly.
"Sorry?" the minty raevan apologized half-heartedly. He was too amused with the situation to really care otherwise.

Josh waited tensely for Isi’s response lingering on each breath of air as if it would be his last. Each measured puff of oxygen seemed to get caught in his drying throat. It may have been due to the heat… or his nervousness. When Isi voiced his approval of Josh returning to help, it felt like a weight had been pushed off of his shoulders. It was much easier to breath now and Josh found himself taking in the mouthfuls of air that his body was painfully lacking. He was pleased to see the frown on Isi diminish in intensity and a more calm façade grace the boy’s features. It was a start…
Josh snapped his head around to Eiry and felt his spirited mood return tenfold. If he wasn’t more careful in his actions one would have thought he had just twisted his neck or received a agonizing case of whiplash. They had a lead now! “So you have met them?” Josh nearly squeak in excitement and astonishment. He wasn’t largely concerned about Eiry’s need to further explore the Delaran’s yard. He recalled that when he was younger his parents couldn’t manage to keep him in one place either. Well, that still may be a fact. Josh already felt himself getting antsy after standing around in the brush and reeds for too long. He supposed that every young child had the thirst to discover and expand their borders away from their parents. However, he didn’t know about the bloodthirsty ghouls or spiteful ghosts in the area. Josh cooed, “Boys will be boys, Isi.”

"They're stupid," Eiry declared as he folded his arms over his half-way formed chest. He didn't like them at all. The instance when he had run into them left him very concerned and frustrated. They had ended up trying to out prank each other and Eiry would've done something drastic had Rivener not come and whisk him away at the time he did. Ever since that encounter, Eiry stayed away from that area of the marsh and they stayed away from the property surrounding the Delaran household. It was a quiet consensus, an unspoken agreement, that kept them from blowing up again. Eiry didn't see them as rabbits, though, he saw them as rodents, which is probably why they didn't come up immediately in his brain when Josh mentioned "bunny".
"They're over here," Eiry mentioned, gesturing towards a direction as he casually started floating in that direction, "This way. Quickfollow and I'll show you."
Isi snapped a gaze of anger at Josh. He OBVIOUSLY didn't know what it meant to be a guardian, much less the kind of dangerous things that happened around the Delaran household on a regular basis. It kind of irked him that someone as irresponsible as this would soon be taking care of a raevan of their own. It made him very nervous, considering that already some raevans had experienced neglect and other such things that would lead to a sad development. "Boys will be boys" wasn't the kind of way that Isi based his caring on.
"I'm still a boy and you don't see me doing things like that. You have no idea what happens around here, besides. It's dangerous, got it? I don't have a gun for the hell of it." Isi sneered as all of the calmness in his face disappeared. With a grunt, he lifted his crutch and started following after Eiry.
He wasn't going to let his ward get hurt again.

And all the calmness that had soften Isi’s childish features seemed to melt and twist into anger instantly. Josh mentally kicked himself. How could he make the boy so infuriated with just one sentence! He didn’t mean it as some sort of threat, it was just an expression that he had picked up over the years. Alas, somehow he had shoved his foot rather deeply into his mouth and chose to just remain quiet next to Isi rather than excite the boy even more. He knew the value of silence. However, Josh had no way of knowing the pain that the Delarans had been through or the suffering that they had endured at this household. Isi was right, he had no right to simply brush off their troubles as if it was just a sprained ankle or bruised arm that they were dealing with. He had to grow up…at least for the time being. They weren’t on some sort of nature hike; they were on a search for the most valuable thing in the world: the soul that would create Josh’s raevan, his child.
Josh’s smile seemed to fade into a thin line which cracked across his face and his eyes grew more intense as he followed after Eiry. He wasn’t here to play; he was here to get a job done. Josh tested his luck and whispered out a faint string of words that seemed to dangle on the dry summer wind around them, “I can see you love Eiry a lot. He’s lucky to have a guardian like you…”

"He's not lucky," Isi stated coldly. It was a little colder than he originally intended so he took a deep breath to soothe himself before he continued, more softer than before, "He's fortunate, if anything. He deserves much better than me. Times are not easy and I keep getting wrapped up in my own business. I forget about his needs a lot. Either that or he gets wrapped up in my business and he gets hurt in some way. I'm telling you, he's fortunate that I love him as much as I do, but he'd be lucky if he ended up with someone that could give him all their devotion and time and make sure that nothing bad ever happens to him. I've failed in that already and I don't want it to happen again. These are the kind of things you learn when you become a guardian: You make mistakes and you wish that they could've had it better." Isi finished the statement with a weak shrug and for a moment he seemed weak. With the next swing of his crutch, Isi resumed his stance of strength as he followed Eiry and he furrowed his brows in determination. Moving through the swamp with sticky mud and weak legs wasn't Isi's forte.
In front of them, not even waiting or checking behind him to see if Josh and Isi were following, Eiry made his path through the marsh. When obstacles came up he simply floated through them and he didn't think that his followers would have to take more time in order to pass around them. All his focus and attention was on figuring out where he had seen the elusive Br'er rabbits last.
