1. yeah I agree
2. why do we have to dub everything why don't we just subtitle it and if your too lazy to read the subtitles screw you and don't watch the show see what I care
PostPosted: Sat Sep 17, 2005 8:30 pm

1. definitely agree. but there are more stupid people so i don't think that's possible
2. i'm just disappointed with the import dvd's subtitles. i know english is a hard language but at least proper spelling won't hurt! i mean, i won't be bothered if a couple sentences sound awkward but my eyes were almost bleeding just to get through a couple of episodes! gah!

1. I've never seen the import, since I watched the fansubs. But if they're anything like the subtitles on the Naruto import I had, then I completely understand. gonk

2. The way they changed the original script to a different one to make it seem more hip and American. There was a part where Jin said, "Mugen." And on the American DVD, the subtitle for it was, "I am ashamed." D: There's something wrong with that.

1. yeah really
2. it's on like really late if u have cable (Well where I live anyways) and it annoys me cause I'm like half awake for it and they keep restarting it

I speak two foreign languages, one fluently and the other nearly so, so while I don't speak Japanese I do understand about dubs and translations, etc. I remember watching the movie JFK in Germany and being alternately amused and ... well, astounded, to put it charitably, by some of the translations, for example.

Nevertheless, in my opinion it's deplorable that it's very fashionable, very trendy, to hate English voice actors.

Many of those actors are very talented. I point to the voices of Mugen and Inuyasha, for example. Certainly, the translation suffers at times - anything translated into any other language must invariably suffer some change (you should try reading Shakespeare in French sometime, for example.) However, that does not mean it's *bad*.

I find it, frankly, somewhat illogical to insist anime be available only in subtitled translations. What's the difference between having the English words written at the bottom of your screen and having them performed by voice actors if you cannot understand the Japanese in the first place?

Of course acting styles between actors vary, and therefore the flavor of the characters will vary. However, I find it self-congratulating to say the Japanese is always automatically better.

For the record, I prefer Japanese language Jin and English language Mugen. ^_^ The 'golden turkey' award goes to French language Jin. Eek...

LOL, I have no problem with Jin speaking French; overall, I enjoy the French dub of the show as much as the English if not more, truth to tell, precisely because it's French and I'm a language geek. ^_^ No, it's the acting of his voice actor. French Jin is somewhat ...excited... from time to time.

and i can't believe you used the word: excited when associating with Jin. hehe. is the french dubbing in the regular american dvd or is that just in some countries? because if it is, then i may buy it. I have the one imported from Japan so they're all japanese.

I don't know if it's in the American DVD or not. I'd like it to be, but I doubt it is.

To comment on what you said about the dubs I dont think it's the change of words that really bothers people I think it's the change in voice tones and acting. At least thats what gets me. I do think steven j blum is a very good voice actor.. but for mugen....meh.. And i don't hold that against him I hold against the idiot who cast him for it. I'm starting to think that the people who are casting the voice actors for many animes lately are basing it on popularity of the voice actors and not if they fit the character although thats just my perspective on it. Mais...Jin en francias ecoute tres sexy ^.~

Has anyone ever watched the dubs and had the subtitles on at the same time? That's always a riot... between the spelling errors like one person said andand just completely different phrasings... those are always special..yeahhhh

argh... i could only imagine Jin talking the language of luuurve. but i do agree, sexy and french is totally hott. ;P

omg. i could barely watch the subtitles alone. but then again, i only have the import. if i do have the regular one i could never do it. i don't think my brain could handle the difference and i would probably do it if i'm ever that bored or that drunk. 3nodding

The difference is that, to match the mouths, some words have to be added/taken out, and phrases are changed.

That gets some people more than you may know.

At least with the subtitles, you have a more accurate translation of what they're saying, rather than, "I hate you, you b*****d," being changed to, "You b*****d," or something, just because of the timing of the mouths.

And I know that example isn't the best to prove my point, as no one would really care if the "I hate you" part is gone or not. Still, it's just to show what I mean.
