"Mother! Mother?" Chunuka had returned from his meeting with Meme, desperate to put things right, desperate to return that smile to his mother's face. He had been scared before but he knew what he had to do now.

He had to face the world.

He had to bring back his father.

"Mother are you here?" He pushed his head into the old family den and squinted in the poor light. "I've got something to tell you."

Her sapphire eyes could be found easily, even in the dimmest of light. They would glow and hold such raw emotion that they were easily distuingishable from the precious gem itself. She hadn't been hiding, oh no, she had been up and about, trying to make the best of the days. Although her heart ached she was grateful that her family had returned, and she had found her eldest son after all, he had returned. Mbari, too, had been devastated at the news of his fathers dissapearence, but together as a family, they were coping.

Hope was something that remained with the gentle lioness at all times, although she often suffered from anxiety, something that had plagued her as a child, as she had been pushed by her mother. In her old age the storm of worry has eased somewhat, and the lioness was usually very calm. Maawio was not one to resort to violence, and she had so much love to give. At the voice of Chunuka, her heart warmed and she raised her head, white dotted ears swivelling towards the den entrance. "Chunuka?"

"Oh, you are here!" Chunuka slinked down into the den, pressing his forehead briefly and affectionately to his mother's own. Then, settling himself close, he drew in a deep breath and prepared to explain himself.

"I'm going to leave the pridelands, mum." He spoke finally. "I've been battling with these thoughts for a long time now, but I've made up my mind. I'm going to go and find father."

He paused, watched her face for a reaction.

She moved foward and accepted his sign of affection with one of her won, coupled with a low purr. Her son seemed breathless and eager to tell her something, so her ears remained perked towards him and a look of anticipation crossed the females kind face.

Leaving the pride lands? At first, anxiety spread through her like a bullet, her stomach twisting for a second until she heard the rest of his sentance and images and thoughts of a more comprehensive nature flooded her brain. "Chunuka..." She spoke softly, her tone warm and eyes full of love, the look on her face was not of apprehension, but of understanding. Before her stood her son, one she believed would never venture across the border, but a son she trusted with her life, and had faith in. It was clear that he was no longer a little boy anymore, that he was making his own decisions.

Amari... He heart groaned inside as she thought of her mates face. Where was he? Would Chunuka find him? She hoped her son wouldnt find any troubel on the way.

"Y-you, will be returning?" The gentle lioness assumed. Hopefully he would return with Amari, and they could be a whole family again. Now was a time for optimism, a state of mind sometimes so bright that it matched the lionesses pelt. Dark blue eyes watched her sons face, which was set with eyes of the same colour, and she smiled.

He looked into her eyes, eyes that reflected the same colours as his. They were so alike these two, so very much alike. He loved those eyes, he had always found comfort in those eyes. They were gentle, never angry or scornful. They were a little sad sometimes too, but just looking into her face made him feel safe and sound.

When he looked in her eyes he felt a little cub again, cuddled close, innocent to the world. A part of him wished he could turn back time but he knew it was impossible.

"Yes, I could never stay away for too long." He buffeted his head against her gently. "My heart could never leave this place." He shook his head. "But I can't stand to see you so unhappy and I know father is suffering too. I have to go and bring him back. I want to return the smile to your face." He looked sad.

"Our family should always be together, no matter what."

Her eyes were now laced with tears, but not tears of sadness, tears that were clinging onto hope, tears fuelled by both compassion and the emotion that her son had brought into her heart. Looking into the face of her son sweetly, she nodded her head.

Although grateful that her son did not want to leave, she knew that if Chunuka had wanted to leave, she must not get in his way. It was similar to when she believed Mbari had left for good, although he said it would only be temporary. But Mbari was now back in the Pridelands, safe. Maawio knew that they would have to fly from the nest some day, and one day, she would not be there to comfort and hold them anymore.

Guilt ran through her, sending a gentle shiver down her spine, she hated to make Chunuka sad with her own emotions, although she knew Amaris departure had effected Chunuka too, she tried to be happy to hold the family together. It was the most important thing to her. Her heart warmed at her sons words, he was such a sweetheart. "I believe that too." She only hoped it would be true. To be seperated from family was dreadful.

With a small pang, she realised that she had been rather independent, albeit in a fragile and anxious state as a cub and juvenile, she had ran from Wingu, ran from her worries and returned to find her mother had died. Maawio had always harboured guilt, guilt for not being close to her mother, although Wingu was pushy. She would make up for lost love with her own family, and Maawios heart was too full of the heated emotion to ever turn cold.

Unaware of Maawio's thoughts of her own childhood and her own mother, Chunuka smiled gently. "I'm glad you're not unhappy with my decision. I just...I had to come and tell you before I went."

He sighed. "Things haven't been too good for our family lately, but I'm going to make things better. I promise." He nuzzled her ear. "Don't worry mother, when I come back, father will be with me and things can get back to normal."

Was that really possible, though? Could things really return to normal? Chunuka desperatly hoped that was the case. He relied on his family and hoped they could rely on him too. He'd do all in his power to see things returned back to the way they had been.

He'd see the joy in his mother's eyes again.

"I'm going to go to the Kusini Lands first, mother. I think that's where he may have gone. He has a friend there, right? Asikari. I think he'll be there."
