I'll be describing loose incense only, no sticks/cones... Much easier, much less time-consuming.
As of right now, I only know how to make two three varieties, the techniques of which I got online: Medidation and protection. For both of these (as with making basically any loose incense) you'll need your mortar and pestle, a non-flammable container such as a cauldron or cast iron pan or something (or a ceramic bowl and sand) and one of those self-igniting charcoal disks used for incense. *SAFETY NOTE* Be careful not to hold the disk while lighting it, because it sparks and it could burn you. You'll also need a small spoon, preferably smaller than a teaspoon, but not too tiny.
These two recipes don't make very much, it's more preferable to make small quantities as you need them. If you want to make more, you can double, or even triple the recipes. They make a great gift if you package them in like a bottle or something. Now, lets make incense!
Protection incense:
2 tsp agrimony
1/2 tsp of Dragon’s Blood resin
3 large Frankincense chunks
1 tsp myrrh
2 tsp coarse sea salt
Pieces of oak bark, if you put them in a pile, they should be about the size of a quarter.
Meditation incense
1 tbsp myrrh
2 tbsp frankincense
1 tsp of sandalwood bark
1 tsp of orris root
Here's the technique for both of these:
You should light the charcoal disk before preparing the herbs, so it has a chance to heat up. It'll spark and flare up, then turn red like an ember when it's ready.
Put your ingredients into the mortar, and crush them to a powder. It's okay if the powder still has chunks of some of the stuff left in it, but not too much or too big.... When you see that the charcoal is ready, sprinkle a spoonful of the herbs onto it. That's why the spoon shouldn't be too big or too small. You don't have to use all of the incense at once. If you want to store extra incense, you can use a glass bottle or even a plastic baggie.
Some herbs smell awful together, so experiment to find combinations that you like. Also... Don't eat or drink any of these... they can make you extremely sick.
And... that's about it. If I find any more recipes, I'll post them here. If anyone wants to share anything, like their experience making these or other recipes, feel free. Have fun, and good luck making your incense.
EDIT: I found a technique online somewhere regarding the charcoal disks. I'm not sure how well this works, or if it even does work, as I haven't tried it, but here's how it's supposed to go. If you place a piece of foil over the disk while it's burning, and put the herbs on top of that, the herbs will heat up and produce scent without actually burning and smoking.
EDIT Squared! (lol?)
I learned a new incense recipe. So here it is.
Full Moon Incense
1 chunk Dragon's Blood resin
1 small chunk Myrrh
1 chunk Copal
a shake or two of Benzine powder
2 pinches Lady's Mantle
a few pinches of Lavender
1 pinch Chamomile flowers
a few pinches of Rose (Optional)
a few small chunks of dried Ginger root
You can add a drop or two of essential oil, but not too much because if it stays wet, it'll begin to mold inside the storage container... nasty...
