Okay, first up is band camp. Band camp is when you will get to know your new band and learn how to march. For band camp, you will need beyond any material possession on Earth the following items: Water Hat Sunscreen with decent SPF rating Water Sneakers/tennis shoes Light, breathable clothing (like cotton T-shirts) Water Sunglasses Your instrument And did I mention lots and lots of water?
Srsly. You may think I'm overexaggerating but water is essential since you'll be outside for hours at a time. It's really easy to get dehydrated and sick while marching even when it's not that hot outside, and especially when you aren't drinking enough water. I'd recommend drinking at least one or two glasses of water a day from now until band camp to keep yourself hydrated, and then bring a large water jug to band camp. A good option is the Camel Pak or similar, where you store water in a backpack-esque with a tube that you can stick in your mouth and drink while you're still on the field.
In band itself, you need to practice hard. You'll be expected to know how to march and how to play your music. If your band requires you to memorize your marching music, memorize it ASAP. That'll not only get you ahead of the game and in a better position to perform, but you'll set a good example to the rest of the freshmen and show the band staff and upperclassmen that you're serious about this.
Above all, you should have a good time. Marching band is an activity that has a lot of hard work leading up to a big payoff. Make friends in the band, don't slack off, follow instructions, and play your best.
Go for it! blaugh

All in all be prepared for hard work. Marching band is a lot harder than people give it credit for. Think it's just walking across and feild playing and intrument? Well it's a lot more.
During Band Camp bring water! LOTS AND LOTS OF WATER! During the first 2 days I made the mistake of not brining any. D: And with TExas heat it WAS NOT FUN.
PRACTICE YOUR MARCHING MUSIC! You're expected to have it memorized just as quickly as the other older band members. Most directors might cut the feshman some slack but that doesn't give you a position ot slack off. Also! Don't just think that you practice you're drill during the day with everyone else. TAKE YOUR DRILL HOME! Work on your technique in front of a mirror. Even go after hours if you have to.
AND FOR GOODNESS SAKE! LISTEN TO THE DIRECTORS, DRUM MAJORS< DRILL TECHS, MUSICA TECHS, AND UPPERCLASS! You may think they're just trying to boss you around because you're a Freshman but they just want whats best!
=D ANd most of all have fun! Lossen up! This year was my Freshman year and in the beggining I was really shy but now I'm knows as the bands Rabid Panda. By the first week of band camp you'll be like a family as long as you're willing to open up and be friendly to everyone!

Also yes bring supplies and stuff, thats a given but if your really into it id also start thinking about getting up early and running a few miles to increase your lung capacity, ( this greatly helps while marching, and playing)

It might be a little discouraging at first, but after about a week, you'll fit right in. Hang in there for the first week. I would suggest playing your music a lot over the summer, too. Listen to the drum majors, section leaders, director, etc. They know how to march and it is their job to teach you, too. They should be nice to you, but no matter what, listen to their advice.

first of all you definitly need to have fun. if you dont your not gonna want to good as good. second listen to you drum major, directors and the upperclassmen. even if the upperclassmen are being jerks just do what they tell you. (unless the directors told you differently) you need their good graces to get you through the year. you do not want to be on their bad side. thirdly thewater thing is a BIG deal. you need to stay hydrated. we have had three people pass out becasue they didnt drink enough water. but have fun and it does get easier as you go along. ninja

Ok first off I'd just like to say one word WATER! Water is no joke you need hydration constantly and no cokes you'll get sick. Your first year is the hardest especially band camp it may seem hopeless and you may want to quiet during camp because it's not easy. But dont, at least wait till your first compition trust me you'll get hooked. Always try your hardest even if you're tired. You'll have a group of people depending on you to be there for all the practices, all the compitions, and to know your stuff and. be doing your best. Don't give up no matter what because EVERYONE needs. Think about what you wear, drink, and eat. Wear light, thin clothes. Drink lots and lots of water. And eat smart, lots of carbs for energy and no dairy before you camp. Always eat breakfast or you'll get sick, trust me I hate breakfast but I force myself to eat it. Always double check everything so you don't forget anything important, like shoes, or your instrument. Other than that have fun and make friends you'll find the truest of friends in band...and the weirdest...but thats what makes it fun, almost everyone is crazy. rofl

First off I'll say, like everyone else here, WATER!!! WATER WATER WATER!
And always eat breakfast. If you don't you'll pass out. (It happened to my friend) Force it down if necessary, You won't regret it.
Again, listen to everyone. They may seem like evil Nazi's But they really want to help you be good.
Finally, Don't quit because it's hard, Don't quit because you think you can't do it, You reap great rewards in the end

Go for it! blaugh To add on to Nevira pencils for your dots and your music if there are changes what not (I don't really know how your band works) A trash bag in case it rains, you can put your bag in there to keep it dry smile no matter what always have layers so have your t-shirt, shorts, etc, but have a sweat shirt and a pair of exercise pants. And as everyone has was HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE! What i always did was buy a one gallon water jug you can also fit a small bottle of gatorade in there for when you aren't feeling your hottest along with your water. Always take a sip of water when you get the chance. it sucks having to watch stuff from the sidelines. Have a few healthy snacks on had too crackers things like that. Best to avoid fast food before or to get as a lunch or dinner during band. And also like everyone says Just have fun love smile it'll be some of the best times of your life, a great place to create strong bonds and wonderful memories... sigh there I go me and my granniness lol xd

Don't assume you are always on step, you probably aren't in the beginning. Don't be afraid to see what foot others are on, and learn to switch feet quickly. Pay attention, learn your commands and responses, be mature and responsible. Listen to your DM and section leaders, they have power for a reason.
