Why are the best guitarists seemingly unheard of outside of the guitar community? My non guitarist friends still think Jimi is the best in history. My vote goes to Michael Angelo Batio. By far the best soloist imo and his techniques are fantastically entertaining and amazing. Plus he built a double neck guitar for himself and plays both necks from the top or at the same time better than 99% of guitarists can play a single neck normally. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hb5QaCfm7bgat 2:55 he starts showing off. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rutyA12z3Oka demonstration of his double neck guitar. I would put Paul Gilbert in second. He does some pretty amazing stuff as well.

I generally abstain from voting in the "Who's the best?" polls, but I will say that my favorite guitarist is Luke Hoskin, the lead guitarist for Protest the Hero.

I think the term 'best' is fairly subjective, but my favourite guitarist is Kaki King.

The best guitarist would have to excel at every single genre, from country to metal, from classical to blues. My favorite, though not the best, have to be Carlos Santana and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Both of their playing is filled with emotion and I love Vaughan's renditions of Hendrix tunes.

hes still a very big influence in many guitarists today. and his riffs are legendary biggrin
Quite a few people on the poll attend the anniversary of his death every year. Yngwie for example.

Jimi, was the inovater of many guitarists of today and was the original creator.
"who established a sonically heavy yet technically proficient bent to rock music as a whole, significantly furthering the development of hard rock and paving the way for heavy metal. He took blues to another level. His music has also had a great influence on funk and the development of funk rock." quote Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jimi Hendrix was the Greatest

I don't think there is a greatest guitarist in the world. There are too many styles and genres of music to judge that, but there are some pretty talented and innovative guitarists out there. I loooooove Santana, but I also think d**k Dale was pretty freakin' awesome, he has such a wacky style of playing. I also love Claudio Sanchez and Angus Young and many many others. It's too hard to choose

who the hell cares who the best guitarist is?
plus, all the people you listed there are famous and really well known.
what if there's somebody, somewhere, that is a hermit, and doesn't leave his home ever, and is the most amazing guitarist and could demolish any of these guitarists?
and b.r.a.n.d.f.l.a.k.e.s is right, there are too many different playing styles and genres to judge.
jimi played with soul and used everything from feedback to his mouth to make his guitar sound amazing.
michael angelo shows off his speed skills but speed isn't everything. Don't get me wrong, he's a great guitarist, but just cuz he's fast doesn't mean he's "the best"

!Skate.fo.Life! who the hell cares who the best guitarist is? plus, all the people you listed there are famous and really well known. what if there's somebody, somewhere, that is a hermit, and doesn't leave his home ever, and is the most amazing guitarist and could demolish any of these guitarists? and b.r.a.n.d.f.l.a.k.e.s is right, there are too many different playing styles and genres to judge. jimi played with soul and used everything from feedback to his mouth to make his guitar sound amazing. michael angelo shows off his speed skills but speed isn't everything. Don't get me wrong, he's a great guitarist, but just cuz he's fast doesn't mean he's "the best" So more gimmicks make you better? If that's the case then Vai can/has done everything that Hendrix did (except set his guitar on fire), and then some. (I.E. playing with his tongue, or making his guitar "neigh") The fact is that it's a subject of OPINION as to who the "best" guitarist is. You can't judge by gimmicks, or speed, or even talent. People are going to believe what they believe, and nothing you say is going to change their mind. EXAMPLE: My dad thinks Angus Young is the best player of all time. I have tried to convince him otherwise by making him listen to Satriani, Vai, Maalmsteen (Sp?), Batio, Gilbert, Chet Atkins, Paul Simon (and Garfunkle), Brad Paisley, and many more. The response I recieve is always the same though, "Yeah, they're pretty good but they just don't have that sound that Angus does." It's true, and I can't argue that. So what did I do you ask? I started learning AC/DC songs, (I can currently play Back in Black and Highway to hell) after about three weeks of practice and learning other things I can copy his style... "Somewhat well", but "i'm still no Angus." Yes that's a true story, and yes it did have a meaning to it. The only way you could actually figgure out who the "Greatest Guitarist" is, would be by asking everybody in the world who their favorite guitarist is and then seeing who got the most votes. That would be the current "Worlds greatest guitarist", because that would be what the WORLD has chosen, not just some thirteen year old in front of a computer. THANK YOU GAIA!!! GOODNIGHT!!!

Personally, my favorite would be Jimmy Page, just because everything was so unique and original with his playing.
As far as the "best" goes, i have to say it would be Randy Rhoades, who was a classical guitarist and that influenced his music.
