I found a pre alpha game for steampunk types and I noticed they are looking for graphic artists, writers, as well as Beta testers.

http://www.steampunkonline.com/about.php

Here is the link in case anyone is interested.

Edit - And here is another game that looks interesting from its screenshots.

Sounds really interesting! I'd love to play a steampunk game! I would love to be a writer for steampunkonline.com, but I'm afraid I'm not creative enough.

I applied for a dev position for steampunkonline over a month ago and haven't gotten a response of any sort since. Not even a generic rejection letter. sad

If you don't mind OFFLINE games... There are quite a few that have gained small noteriety... Well, one gained a -bit- more...

That "one" being "Bioshock"

I don't think I have to go into any further details...

Another, rather unheard of one, was called "Bumpy Trot" in Japan, and when it came over, it got the name "Steambot Chronicles"

Now... Uh, there is only one MAJOR Steampunk setup MMO... And it's the most popular in the world...

World of Warcraft.

It's set in a steampunk time period, although, it's also weighed more heavy on the Fantasy side.

But, the Steampunk is there! Cogs Away!

Having anachronistic looking machines in the form of big daddies does not a steampunk story make.

I agree that bioshock had a fair amount of punk, but it didn't have any _steam_ it was an electric world. It's not steampunk.

I have a feeling that the steampunk online thing has stopped production. Their updates stop at Halloween last year and they haven't updated their copywrite info down at the bottom.

what about Fly For Fun, aka Flyff? most of the buildings have windmill and gears, there are several airship about and they are made of wood with clock work/magic engines. you can also buy air boards or brooms to fly around on.

A wonderful Steampunk game is Arcanum. It does have a multiplayer feature, but sadly no one ever plays it. But you can get a group of people together and possibly play some sort of multiplayer storyline or RP in it via Hamachi. The single player is well worth the time used up playing it.

Heck, I got a couple of hundred hours of gameplay out of Arcanum. It was VERY worth the fifty dollars to get it, and I imagine it comes much cheaper now. The replay value is incredible as well, though once you pair Teleportation with Melee Master and Dodge Master, it becomes ridiculously easy. For bonus points, play a character with NO magical ability whatsoever and give him abysmal social scores. For further bonus points, maintain positive alignment above 50 without abusing the beggar thing. ^_^
