So, currently, I have a BC Rich Son of the Beast guitar. It has crappy pickups that don't give me the desired sound I want. I was wondering if anybody knew what kind of pickups I would need to buy to give my BC Rich a more metal sound. A sound sorta like Ensiferum, Immortal and Ashen Light. A real aggresive tone. I also want to know if obtaining that sound mainly relies on the pickups or something else like the amp. Oh, and one more question, is it better for me to have a professional install pickups or me?

I've been playing for two years now and I'm still new to the business of upgrading my guitar and all that.

I think humbuckers is what most used for metal, not completely sure though. But just go to a store that sells guitars and try a few different out and see what the ones you like have in them. And you'll also want to fool around with different types of distortion, and see what works for your goal. As for installation, if you know how they work and know how to change them then you might as well do it yourself (and you'll save money not having to pay someone to do it), but if you don't, or if your not confident that you'll do it right (or even if it's really inexpensive) you might want to get someone else to do it.

Okay, yeah, that seems like one of the best ways to go. Thanks Grave.

I'm pretty sure that BC riches all come with humbuckers, just really shitty ones. A good set of humbuckers will put you down a good $200 bucks, in my option, I would just save up longer and get a new guitar, BC rich are pretty much all looks, sadly. If your going for a 'metal' sound, you can get a good mid priced Ibanez, or Schecter.

Yes, I am also thinking about that option. It'd be nice to keep my BC Rich though. Thanks for naming some brands for me.

I'd say Seynour Duncans are the best for that, for a decent price. The Dimebucker is a good pickup, but kinda overused. I like the Invader personally. EMG's are also good. But really, for a cheap fix-all, get a good distortion pedal like the MR-2, it makes my Fender starter kit sound sick. What kind of amp are you using?

It is a Lyon 25 Watt Practice Amp. I am, however, going to most likely upgrade to a Marshall soon.

I have a Fender 10 Watt, and I have been leaning towards the Marshall 100-Watt Half-stack, but I'm likely buying my friend's Peavey Half-stack. The amp will make a huge difference too.

ROFL! Sorry, that is one hell of a change in quality. I'm rocking how a little 50 watt Marshall amp. Its good for what I'm doing now, but were going to be playing shows extremely soon, so I'm keeping my eyes open. For a lower amp, I can make my guitar wale like a banshee though.

I don't want to waste money on an amp I'm gonna have to replace if I start playing shows. My friend's offering it for $400, and I do believe it is a tube.

Good options, Tevor. But you did forget about the Icebuckers as well... those will get you a really nice tone. I have a BC Rich Warlock and I'm thinking of either getting the Seymour Duncans or the Icebuckers. BC Rich does come standard with Humbuckers, but they're a lower grade and quality; that's why standard, non-costomized Bc rich brand guitars are usually pretty cheap. The Icebuckers come standard in a white color, and I don't think that you can get them in black, but they don't look bad on BC Riches.

Here's a link if you want to check out the looks of the pick ups:

@tl;dr's: READ: BC Rich SUCKS. Yeah, the Icebuckers are about 370 dollars, you may wanna stick with SD. I'll help you when you're ready to purchase though.

I'm glad I came to this thread because I was planning on getting a BC Rich Warlock until I came here and saw people saying how bad it was. Jeez, I dodged a bullet there. Thanks for the indirect help, though to be honest I probably shouldn't buy anything to extravagant since I'm not really shredding or anything yet, but it would just be nice to have a higher quality guitar than I have now, though I suppose it really doesn't matter as long as I learn with what I got. Again thanks for the help.
