Ok, so I've been studying Japanese for a little while now (about a year) and I wanted to get into some real manga and or books for practice. So I was wondering if anyone knew of some manga/books that are completely in Japanese and not designed to be learning material, simply just something that people in Japan would actually read. Anywhere from as basic as it gets to intermediate grammar is what I'm looking for. So obviously it will most likely only be children's material that is available but I really don't care hehe. I really don't care what genre any of it is, I just want to be able to understand it. So I guess lets just make a list of reading material, not only for me but everyone on the forum since I'm sure other people will benefit from a list like this. Including the level of the reading would be a good idea but not necessary.

Edit: I Just noticed I spelled manga wrong >.< Yes I know how it's actually spelled.

If you've only been studying for a year, I doubt you're ready for a fully-Japanese book aimed for a 13+ audience. After the first two years or so, most people are probably just getting out of picture books. Anyway, if you have got the knowledge - not trying to belittle you, but Japanese is a diffcult language, espeically to read because of kanji - then I'd reccomend searching for something that interests you on google in Japanese. Like translate "online webcomic" or something, or "science fiction story", or whatever you want.

I understand what your saying but Japanese comes pretty easily to me (not really to sure why though...) so I really want to try something out. Today I actually did check out a manga called School Rumble and understood all of the grammar and what not that was being used just I didn't know most of the kanji. It had furigana so looking up the words I didn't yet know was pretty easy. I did notice from this however that I am most definitely going to have to use manga and stories that have furigana until I get my kanji reading ability substantially higher.

I am going to try out your idea though, much easier to just find random stories than buy a manga or story hehe. But I do still plan to buy one just don't know which yet hehe.

This book is awesome. I own it, Its a book of fairy tales. it part of a series, i have the 11th in the series. sadly, i can't tell you the title. i don't read kanji, but thats okay because the inside of the book has furigana all in it. its just the cover that has only kanji.

User Image

there is a picture of the titles. The big words say "the king has donkey ears" which is the title of the first story. the little words under that are another story title. above it all is what i think says the title of the series. if anyone knows how you pronounce it and what it means in english i would love it! i want more of the same series! its such a good book for me to translate.

also, i own inuyasha manga in japanese(animanga, goes with the second movie) which is really nice because even though it has no furigana i can read along with the anime and know what they are saying and how to pronounce it, what it looks like and such.

I also have an old manga called the battle of kawanaka jima(based on true events i think). but its from the 80s, i don't think it would be easy to find. its a good read though.

I own the first harry potter in japanese. ohhh its hard for me. no furigana. but it might be easier for you. idk.

-drools- Where'd you get that book?! I can't read the title either... D: huu.. -wantwant-

The public libary around here doesn't have any books in forgien languages, but the one I used to live by did... I'd check that out, too.

That looks like a really cool book I'm probably going to try and get myself a copy. Heres the readings of the kanji, I'm not exactly sure what it would be translated into English though.

Thanks! But, can you write that all in kana please?
PostPosted: Sun Apr 20, 2008 2:11 pm

Well it is already in kana, if you mean just without showing the kanji that represents it then sure, here it is:

がくしゅうはんせかいめいさくどうわぜんしゅう

"Grimms Fairytales" is really awesome! I'm so glad I bought it. I for sure suggest it as one to study with. Heres a list of the stories in my book.

ねむりひめ-nemuri hime-Sleeping Princess(sleeping beauty)

おかしのいえ-okashi no ie-Candy House(Hansel and Gretel)

あかずきん-aka zukin- Red Hood(Little Red Rideing Hood)

きんのがちょう-kin no gachou-Golden Goose(I don't remember the normal title in english, is it the same?)

しちひきのこやぎ-shichi hiki no koyagi-Seven young goats(I have no clue, I've never heard of this story. Have you?)

Yayness! soooo awesome!

Most manga uses advance grammar, stuff that someone only studying for a year wouldn't possibly know. But there are children's books online and at places like www.thejapanshop.com . I got my textbooks from there also.

Alright, not sure if we're supposed to post where to get free things, but.

You can download raw manga at hanashi.org, http://raw-manga.aceboard.fr/ , and mangahelpers.com . At least that's where I get all of mine. If you want a manga suggestion then tell me what subjects you like, and I'll give you some titles. (I'm a big manga reader so I know tons of different genres.) ^^

I use jisho.org as my dictionary, so if your manga has no furigana you can use the kanji dictionary.

On another note, it's interesting to hear how people view Japanese. Some people think it's extremely easy and others think it's one of the hardest languages in the history of the universe. I guess it just goes to show how differently our brains function. (I personally find asian languages like Japanese much much easier than european languages like Spanish.)
